Okay, so I am new to multiplayer games and decided to make Halo: Reach my game. I want to practise and get good at it. Like any sport, it takes dedication, time and knowledge. So I have read various websites for tips and ideas. For example, always aim for the head, strafe while shooting, use bumper jumper.
Just thought whether any of the pros could give the amateurs (aka noobs) any insights…

Generally speaking, try to stick to areas with a lot of cover, don’t run through the open, especially on large maps, save your sprint for chasing enemies and those occasions where you truly must run through the open.
Also, stick to sprint, good movement is your best friend.
I don’t know who told you to always aim for the head, but they are wrong. Most headshot weapons don’t give you a headshot damage bonus until shields are down. Example: the DMR is a (minimum) five shot kill. Don’t try to land 5 headshots. Shoot at the body (its a bigger hitbox) until the shields pop and then finish them off with a headshot.
Its good advice. Spam at the chest, pace for the face.
Also realise that shielding must be down in order to make a kill. That means you have to think a bit about the order in which you do different types of damage. Get good at throwing a punch directly after shield pop, always punch LAST in a CQB and youll almost always win. It actually promotes shooting more before the hit, contrary to popular opinion.
Get good with the pistol because youll almost always have one and can actually kill slight faster at full accuracy than a rifle at a distance of about 10 feet.
Plasma pistol wrecks shields like nothing else in the game with only 4 shots which go out as fast as you pull the trigger. Use this to your advantage, using the two pistols together = great success.
If you get in close, go for a double beat down, this will ensure a kill (if your quick enough)
Bumper Jumper is also personal chaoice, it’s not suited to everyone, i prefer default myself, which is strange tbh as it’s the only Halo game i’ve used it on and i’ve been playing Halo since the beginning,
the Shotgun is a good close one kill weapon too and sticky grenades are your friend,
If your a serious noob (and i may get serious pelters for this) but Armour Lock will help reduce your death count, it can also work as a weapon, whereby if an enemy gets close give a quick AL EMP blast to deplete their shield and either finish them with a headshot or a beatdown.
BTW, feel free to add me and join my team for some decent pointers, i usually play with my sons and or friends, my tag is the same as my username here.
Thank you so much, I’ve already learnt a lot. Never knew abou the headshot/ bodyshot, that will already make life easier. Just 2 questions leading from your comments. When in batle, the best would be to strafe with left thumbstick and aim with right thumbstick? It’s seems tough, but I guess I should just practise. Furthermore, I assume I will crouch when I am shooting at a distance?
This has already helpeed a lot. I assume CQB is close battles?
I don’t think you should pick a control scheme because someone else says so. It is about your preferences and not their’s. Finding a comfortable control scheme and sensitivity will do wonders for your gameplay. Maybe you can try a few at first, but do not switch up your settings too often and allow yourself to adjust to your settings.
CQB - CLOSE QUARTERS BATTLE AKA CQC - close quarters combat
Another good pointer would be to try and learn the maps as quickly as you can, and also where weapons are and their spawn times, this helps massively,
Crouching will reduce bloom, but i find it can also hinder in a frantic battle, it’s all trial and error friend, but practice is the key, lots and lots of practice,
Also try and watch other players as you go along, you’ll be surprised at how much you can learn by this.
Good Luck fella and welcome to the Halo community!!
> Don’t spam weapons that have reticule bloom, pace your shots, especially with the DMR, Needle Rifle & Pistol.
>
> Also, crouching will reduce reticule bloom on all weapons.
I would totally agree with all of this, (apart from my slight issues with crouching and bloom) but in the whole it’s great advice,
and without sounding like a bum sook, The Little MOA tends to be a wealth of info, in my experience anyway.
I really appreciate the approach and best of luck. As for me, I’ve tried to improve myself roughly the same way, but finally reached a point where I had to admit I just suck.

I’d be more than happy to friend you on xbl and give you some pointers in a custom game if you like or play some Matchmaking games with you so you can follow me around and see what I do. I’m not a professional by any means, but I’m better than the average player.
Also, some things to consider.
Always try to have an exit strategy. If you start taking hits and you either don’t think you can win the battle or you can’t find the enemy, you’ll want to be able to get out of their line of sight quickly. This goes back to what another player said about…
Always picking sprint. 99% of the time, you’ll want to choose sprint in a gametype. There are only a few exceptions to this rule, like…
-If the enemy has a wraith in your base in BTB, try using the jetpack.
-If the enemy is resorting to hiding around corners with a shotgun or a sword in a game of slayer, try using the hologram ability to lure them out.
Once you send it and you think they can see it and are heading towards it, throw a grenade at it and finish them off with a headshot.
Watch some MLG videos on YouTube. Knowing how the professionals play and trying to change your behaviors to mimic theirs can be beneficial. Obviously some things take longer than others like learning spawn locations (especially in relation to where you’re standing in a 1v1 game), and learning where the enemy is likely to be coming at you from. If nothing else, these videos are extremely entertaining. You’ll get some great tips.
Play through the Halo 3/ Halo: Reach campaign on legendary. I played through the Halo 3 campaign on legendary and when I got back into Reach I noticed my k/d ratio (times you’ve killed another player compared to times you’ve died) jumped from 1.26 to 1.33.
Hope this helped. Don’t be shy about sending a friend request on xbl. I’d be happy to help you out.
Please remember to tell me where you got my gamertag from though.
Thanks to everyone for the opinions, I have been practising and will keep doing so. 2 Last questions before I stop typing and start shooting (while thinking…)
Just to confirm, until the shields are down, I can shoot anywhere on the body, but when the shields pop, headshot, game over.
And then, talking about reticle bloom, it actually means pacing your shots. The smaller the reticle, the greater the chances of landing the shots are.

Well, for starters, stay away from Vanilla Reach. Only play Reach MLG or Halo 3. Both of those require skill and you’ll actually get good at the game rather than learning how to abuse Reach’s crutches.
Watch gameplays of professionals/good players and you’ll learn a bunch of tactics. But you can’t just watch them and not take in anything, you must be observant and I guarantee you that this will make you much better.
