If H5 has a jetpack Im not playing it all those AAs and non Halo gimmicks killed halo and gotta go.
Well, that’s a pretty strict criteria.
I take it that if they have a Jetpack in Campaign, Firefight, or Customs and the MM doesn’t, then you wouldn’t play the game still? That would sure suck for you, pal.
Just because the last one didn’t work doesn’t mean it’s going to return untouched.
I like the concept of being able to reach areas you normally can’t. I like vertical maps and getting the drop (literally) on noobs who can’t look up. A lot of others do, too.
What if, as a compromise, it was replaced with a grappling hook, which prevented you from firing when in use? Or if the users aim was incredibly nerfed… after all, it can’t be easy to accurately aim when flying… or if it was much slower?
I want JP comes back in some form… but I’m not overwhelmed with the Reach or Halo 4 iterations. I truly think the best is yet to come.

The same thing can be skillfully obtained by jumping. If the map designers want you to be able to reach an area from another area, then they will make that built into the map.

Pretty much this. If we have good map design, there is no need for there to be Jetpacks to give players advantages over others.
I personally believe that the Jetpack doesn’t belong in a Halo game. The only way I can see Jetpack working at all is if it ends up being a map pick-up rather than something you can start with. Be it an armour ability that regenerates over time, or an equipment-like device that disappears after being used, as long as it’s something on the map that we fight over, I’ll be happy.
Jetpacks break most maps that are designed around high ground control like Abandon, Haven and Solace.
If something can’t be accomplished through jumping, it shouldn’t be accomplished at all. Reach JP’s were a nightmare, overly and easily abused. Halo 4’s are pretty bad too but the maps are more flat so it’s slightly negated.

Or, just make sure that 343i offers a competitive & social slayer playlist. Keep the competitive playlist free of AAs and other things the competitive community has been frustrated with, and give the social playlists the option to play games with loadouts & AAs, etc.
We can find a way to make both work here.

Which is why I always suggest redoing armor abilities so they’re map pickups, not spawn items, this way the map designers can tailor what AAs are used on the map in a match, and design the map accordingly.
As far as Jet packs go, I see two fixes:
-
Make it a Jump pack that is essentially a vertical Thruster pack, where you cannot fire until you are just about to land, to prevent instant advantage tactics, making it only viable for transport
-
Replace it with the ability to place grav lifts around the map (1 at any given time) so enemies can follow you or teammates can benefit as well as you.
Jet pack, Promethean vision, and Hardlight shield should be removed from Halo. The rest are bearable.
> Jet pack, Promethean vision, and Hardlight shield should be removed from Halo. The rest are bearable.
Whats wrong with hardlight shield? it is incredibly easy to counter. move towards the slowed player jump and melee, easy. i feel it is very UP actually

Agreed. Most people are either backing up in corridors with hardlight shield activated, in which you rush & melee; or alternatively are getting pinned in medium-range fire-fights in the bigger, open maps, where it is crazy easy to team flank anyways.
Did you have a problem with Jetpacks in Halo 3? I didn’t, I thought it changed up the game at times.

Which we have been able to do since Reach. I really don’t know why nobody bothered to try.
I even think we could go back and alter the Loadouts to correspond with the AAs that are assigned to them.

There weren’t any Jetpacks in Halo 3.

People have, MLG even did it.
> I even think we could go back and alter the Loadouts to correspond with the AAs that are assigned to them.
If you want a class based loadout shooter like Battlefront, then that would be fine. Unfortunately for you, I don’t think that’s what many people are asking for out of the next Halo game. Fortunately, Invasion should return, which is structured exactly like how you asked.

Because say you are shooting a player from a long distance, they activate the shield, and hide behind a rock, thereby enabling them to cheat death. That, and the fact that at close-range its practically useless.

Given that the HLS has a large slowdown in movement speed, and that it doesn’t even give complete frontal protection, in that situation, your opponent would have likely reached the rock and survived by simply walking to it.
Having extra frontal protection with a significant loss of speed is a pretty balanced trade off. And would it make you feel any better if the HLS collapsed after taking enough damage?
I seriously don’t understand how anyone could think Halo needs or benefits from jetpacks. Halo is one of if not the most vertically dynamic FPS’s on console. No other shooter comes close to having vertical movement play as big of a role as Halo. Halo was better without jetpack and it will be fine without it in Halo 5. All jetpack serves to do is dumb down the vertical aspect of Halo by making it a one button aspect, instead of careful map movement.
Before, to gain the high ground, you had to work for it, now you press a button. Pathetic.
The JP is a cool little toy, so long as its kept out of ranked playlists and is still severely nerfed. I believe maps need to be designed for standard jumping first and foremost, after which they can throw in JPs for funsies.
Put it on a map in a balanced position where teams can fight for it; like any power up or power weapon. I watched all of MLG Columbus 2012 today and saw some fantastically skillful jet pack plays.
It’s broken because it’s available to every player off spawn with near infinite usage (player life span not actual thrusting duration). Nearly all problems could be negated if it was simply placed on the map with a fuel counter.
> Having extra frontal protection with a significant loss of speed is a pretty balanced trade off. And would it make you feel any better if the HLS collapsed after taking enough damage?
Nope. It still acts as a shield, which is what over-shield should be for anyway. I don’t like it, and i don’t want it to return. Full stop.
