Aliens and Halo: Resemblances

First of all you have to watch the 1986 movie “Aliens” for any of this to make sense (I did add links for resemblance pictures in case you can’t watch the movie). I have noticed tons of comparisons between halo and aliens. Specially the first three halo games, so if you have only played halo 4 and up this may not appeal to you. I can’t post actual links so just copy and paste. I like the fact that they saw aliens and used some good ideas so don’t say I’m complaining.
Ok let’s start.

  1. Seargent Johnson and Apone
In the movie Aliens, there was a black military seargent who smokes and is a one of the toughest marines. That description fits perfectly with both characters.

  1. Xenomorphs and the flood
At first you may not see any obvious similarities. But if you think about it, they are more related than you may think. First and foremost, both are parasitic alien species that produce their offspring by using other life forms. First they start out as a small, tan and multi legged creature that jumps onto the hosts’ stomach or face to begin its transformation. Once it has fully transformed into an adult it becomes strong enough to fight. Depending on which host it infects dictats how it will turn out. Plus, they both have a leader. Gavemind and the Alien queen.

  1. The marines
The marines in Aliens bare a striking resemblance to the marines in halo C.E. (not anniversary). Their helmets are the most noticeable.

  1. Ships
The Marine ship in Aliens called the Sulaco is very similar to The pillar of Autum. They both are both massive and long ships. This is the same case with the pelican and the marine dropship.

  1. The Atmosphere Processor and the Portal to the Ark
The atmosphere prossesor and the portal to the ark both are circular structures surrounded by massive pillar-like objects.

  1. Dialogue
There are a ridiculous amount of lines from halo C.E. that are copied from aliens.

Apone: All right, let’s go people. The Corps ain’t payin’ us by the hour!
Johnson: Hit it, Marines! Go! Go! Go! The Corps ain’t payin’ us by the hour!

Hicks: All right people. Let’s move like we got a purpose.
Johnson: You heard the lady. Move like you got a purpose!

Frost: …telling ya, I got a bad feeling about this drop.
Crowe: You always say that, Frost. You always have a bad feeling about this drop.

Mendoza: I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
Johnson: Boy, you always got a bad feeling about something.

Grunt 1: Me have bad feeling about this.
Grunt 2: You always have bad feeling! You had bad feeling about morning food nipple!

Hicks: Ferro, do you copy?
Ferro: Standing by.
Hicks: Prep for dust off. We’re gonna need immediate evac.
Ferro: Roger. On our way.
Gorman: (to Ferro) Immediate dust off on my clear, then stay on station.
Ferro: In the pipe. Five by five.

Cortana: Cortana to Echo 419. Come in, Echo 419.
Foehammer: Roger, Cortana. I read you five by five.
Foehammer: Affirmative. Echo 419 going on station.

Hudson: Well, that’s great. That’s just yoinking great, man! Now what the yoink are we supposed to do? We’re in some real pretty yoink now, man!
Hicks: (grabs Hudson) Are you finished?
Hudson: That’s it, man. Game over, man. Game over! What the yoink are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?

Marine: Oh man, we’re trapped in here. We’re screwed! We’re screwed, man!
Keyes: Stow the bellyaching soldier. Remember that you’re a leatherneck.

Hudson: There’s movement all over the place!

Foehammer: I’m tracking movement all over the place!

Well that pretty much wraps it up. Share your thoughts.

I heard a long time ago that Halo was heavily based on the Alien universe, if not meant to be in the same universe.
It might have been mentioned in a designer interview that the Pelican was straight off influenced by the dropships in Aliens (straight edges, retro feeling).

I’ll try to find some sources on that.

Halo, especially CE, was heavily influenced by the Alien series

You can make links yourself, if you didn’t know.

Yes, things in media do get influenced by eachother.

By the time something makes it into a video game, its probably been in a movie or book at some point.

Found one of my source.

Here is an extract from “The Art of Halo: Creating a virtual world” (DelRey Books).

> [The Pillar of Autumn]
> Environment artist Paul Russel spearheaded the creation of the ship’s interiors. “The work I did on the Pillar of Autumn came from looking at Ron Cobb’s work on Aliens,” Russel explains. "I won’t call it anything cheesy like a ‘homage’ or anything; Cobb’s work informed a lot of what I did on the Autumn. It was taking that future industrial look that Cobb did so brilliantly and riffing off of that, without turning it into a blatant swipe.

I think almost everything that is scifi in someway was inspired by Alien/Aliens.

Yep.

Probably true. It was probably the first gritty and dark sci-fi film. The aesthetic of Star Trek was all white and smooth, and that works for itself, but would not work for Halo.

Especially military sci-fi
