As you all (probably) know, all Halo games before H5 had certain weapons with scopes (battle rifle, sniper, etc.) and you could aim down them. If you aimed down a weapon with no sights, you would just zoom in, and shooting would descope you. In H5, they gave every weapon sights (including the melee weapons) that you could aim down. I’m curious as to people’s opinions on this mechanic, and which system they would like to see in Infinite.
Get rid of ADS.
It needlessly clutters the screen when you actually try to get an unobstructed view through the scope.
It destroys Halo’s visual identity.
It’s ugly AF.
And last but not least, it completely contradicts lore.

1000% Agree here!
Zooming in with the Halo 5 pistol for example actually covers up 3/4 of your target! Completely laughable! Zooming in is suppose to make you see your target I though
Might be one of the worst features put into Halo. Also, melee weapons should not have zoom that increases it’s range.
I’m against it for the same reasons as listed above, but I would also like to point out that applying ADS across the board makes the entire sandbox more generic. Whether or not a particular weapon can has the ability to zoom has been an important design and balancing tool. For example an automatic weapon with a 2X scope ala the ODST SMG would be an interesting addition to the multiplayer sandbox, but said addition loses all impact when even the sword has the ability to use a “scope.”
Smart Scope is just an awful addition to Halo.
I personally liked the addition of smart scope, but do agree it could be done better without cluttering the screen as much.
I’d prefer them to simply remove that visual mechanic.
I don’t see how the “aim down sights” visual addition to certain weapons in Halo 5 actually improved anything over the traditional aim graphic from previous games.
Halo’s 1-4 allowed you to zoom in to shoot at enemies from a larger distance, but Halo 5: Guardians makes that much less effective while lowing your accuracy if you don’t want to use the aim mechanic.
It should absolutely go.
I don’t really mind the smart-scope feature in Halo 5, i know it ‘looks’ like we’re doing a generic ADS like CoD but the mechanics are vastly different.
The smart-scope is more or less just the good old zoom function, with an animation that makes it look closer to reality. I won’t mind if it’s in Infinite, but i certainly won’t cry if it is gone either. If anything just make it optional if you want Smart-scope or classic zoom.

343I could easily update the graphic look of the original style if people want better visuals. Think Ironman and Terminator (original ones) movies or the many Japanese anime shows or movies, especially the mech ones.

The mechanic is somewhat different yes, but the visual is identical and that’s what most people hate…and why should Halo look closer to reality??? Your a genetically engineered human wearing a highly advanced two ton armor suit, traveling through space while fighting multiple alien species… There’s nothing real about that at the moment that’s for sure lol Not to mention I’m pretty sure technology would have advanced in that time. If you think about it, If you’re Spartan going into battle why do you want there to be a holographic projection of the gun you’re holding show up on your HUD when you’re shooting at the enemy. That makes zero sense!!! All this does is obscure your target. If I were a Spartan going to battle I know I wouldn’t want it lol
I’m all for an option to pick “classic” or ADS style zooming, but I highly doubt that will happen.
i dont see the big deal. Its not like you have to aim down sights to shoot. just pretend like the feature isn’t there and bam, you have classic halo. haha
I wouldn’t mind a choice between classic zoom and smart scope.
Lore wise, I’m pretty sure Spartans don’t need to actually aim down their sights, their helmets have a feature that allows for them to zoom in without cluttering their view with their weapon.
Gameplay wise, classic zoom makes more sense but smart scope just looks cool. I would be happy with either one!
I think the feature for the ones with out a scope didn’t do the weapons much justice the AR one especially.

You actually get a tighter bullet spread and less recoil when aiming down sights in Halo 5 , with all weapons. Precision weapons should have a reliable scope with which to aim , auto fire weapons should not.

This is absolutely correct. This is why Chief (and Spartans in general) is so effective while hip firing , the software shows them where to aim , the A.I. shows them the projected path of munitions , the hardware (Mjolnir) compensates for recoil and and human error. ADS is a completely redundant system. The only thing that makes sense about ADS is shouldering , because Spartans would be trained to shoulder their weapon (as all soldiers are) before receiving Mjolnir.
I would get rid of the down the sight mechanics overall as the older style zoom seems more effective & futuristic than the aim mechanic that is more commonplace in shooters.
Though H5g is not the best iteration of that mechanic either, the shooter keeps the head so far away from sights that it makes me wonder if the designers have ever held a gun in their entire life.
I’d be rid of it. The Zoom function is something you don’t see in every game, and brings a form of uniqueness to Halo, that Halo 5 wrongfully discarded.
Furthermore, using ADS covers the bottom of your screen, obstructed by a completely opaque object (your gun), so you can’t know if there’s enemies in a lower level, allowing them to shoot first, second and maybe third.
With Zooming in, the screen simply zoomed in, it’s pretty self-explanatory. It only applied a black, transparent box that you could still see through without plaguing the reticule at all.
For Infinite, I want Zoom to be there in place of ADS, BUT I want 3rd person ADS animations. Halo 5 is the first Halo game where you can identify whether a player is zooming/using ADS or not, and that’s something I honestly liked.
If Infinite is going to have Attachments, it doesn’t automatically mean Zooming won’t work. It’s quite simple, really. For alternative styles and ranges (Sentinel, Morph, Hybrid, Longshot, Recon), just paint the black box with a fading color matching the scope’s. For Scopes with functionality (COG), you can add the functionalities when zooming in besides the reticle, as long as they’re small and a bit faded to not intervene with target acquisition.
ADS combined with the slow down of your speed was honestly a choice I liked. I would keep it, but refine the spartan abilities in general. Going off topic a little bit, this could be a good simplified movement layout for Infinite.
-Sprint is replaced with a faster walking and strafing speed, and jump height is also enhanced.
-Clamber remains
-ADS remains
-the spartan charge is replaced with a quick dodge mechanic
- the dodge mechanic would behave in a similar way to how to sprint would in 5 (where you run the risk of your shields not recharging while in use, in such a way as to prevent spamming). In addition, it would behave more as a 0G simulation that would carry the player a short to medium distance.
