Aim Assist and the punishment of controller

I was posting about this very subject back in the test preview. 343 Said they had worked on it but from what I am seeing that was not true. At least from my experience. Back in the test preview I played on both the Xbox and PC. Xbox it felt slightly more like a standard Halo game but again on PC this feels nothing like any other game that has existed before. M&KB it feels like a typical shooter these days. But Controller on PC is the worst experience from a video game hands down. Some people will disagree but here we are again here in the Beta and more and more people are bringing up the fact that plain and simple the controller has been knee capped and now with the Beta out it seems more that this was done on purpose rather than a “bug/glitch” that we had thought it was in the test preview.

You hit all points to the nail, yes, this is also happening in MCC where KBM is struggling, and the opposite for Infinite where controller is struggling.

Quite the reversal indeed. For the time being, playing KBM isn’t a bad idea to pick up until they can address this.

They maybe won’t update all the needed changes until Dec 8 since this is an Open-Beta but I’m hoping they do somewhere in November.

Biggest thing that helped my aim was lower sensitivity to 4 on both horizontal and vertical. Also field of view at 100. Also try not aiming as much with you right stick and use you left

Most ppl who play the game at a high level still say controller is the superior input just like in MMC. As a player who uses mouse and key exclusively I can speak at least for myself when I say… Mouse and Keyboard feels bad in Infinite just as it did with MMC. Does not feel nearly as good as other FPS’s… at least for me… I’ve heard others say the same.

Im not sure, Im having a much smoother time on Mouse and keyboard than aiming wth a controller. Ive been trying controller for the past two days and i find myself missing shots that I normall dont miss in H5 or MCC. But I must say even on MxB aiming does feel off to me.

Do players typically spend any time outside of vehicles in a typical game? Is driving the only relevant skill in Halo?

The main reason controller has such an advantage in MCC is the absurd aim assist. I suspect 343 were concerned with M+KB players having too great an advantage, as they have done in many games with cross-platform play in the past, so overcompensated.

I am not happy to hear that Infinite may have the inverse problem. I don’t want my own preferred input method to have an advantage either. They are very different schemes and 1:1 may be impossible, but I think we should strive to make things as fair as we can for everyone.

Overall aim assist needs to be more like Halo 3. Maybe 10% or so less. Bullet magnetism is pretty much fine where it’s at now. Going between MCC on mouse and keyboard and Infinite on controller feels bad.

All the pro teams use controller so I wouldn’t worry about it

The controller sensitivity in this game is complete -Yoink!- -Yoink!-. Everyone around here babying the devs and swooning over the game, but I can’t even use a sensitivity setting I’m comfortable with because IT DOESN’T EXIST in the game. I canceled my campaign Dec 8 pre-order. Here’s some raw and honest words about the game you won’t see on Twitter. I’m not sacrificing my look sensitivity just to play Halo, not a chance in hell. The controller sensitivity cap must be raised to 20 or 50, there no exceptions. There’s no other way in hell I’m playing this Halo Infinite game. No -Yoink!- way not a chance.

Idgaf about the aim assist, it’s fine.

I agree wholeheartedly. I went into the academy to test the weapons and there was not any aim assist to speak of, at least not that I could see. And it really does damper my experience. Especially since I’m a seasoned Halo player. I am by no means a master of Halo, but I tend to average a K/D of 0.7 to 1.3 in most matches with an accuracy of 60-70%, all with controller. Even in the Halo games I’m not good in like Halo 2 I still do decent with accuracy. But with Halo Infinite as soon as I came in my accuracy dropped to below 30% on most occasions and my average K/D is 0.2-0.3. That doesn’t happen on accident. I even tried dropping my sensitivity and everything and I still struggle.

It’s a combination of little to no aim assist and every weapon being fast firing. The lack of a reliable slow shooting precision weapon other than the BR is ridiculous. The Commando does not cut it for me because it shoots too fast to use reliably as a semi-auto and its heavy recoil makes it a pain to maintain accuracy with a controller. Like I said, the BR is good, but without aim assist I lose most fights I’m in. I also want to see the DMR make a return, but that’s an entire topic altogether.

I know PC players act like controllers getting aim assist is the bane of their existence, but this is what happens when controllers don’t have aim assist at all in a game where the time to kill is much longer than most FPS games. Most of a firefight in Halo is maintaining accuracy rather than being the first to fire. And it’s much easier to do that on a mouse or if you have aim assist on controller.

What’s fair is making sure all inputs feel good to use. It’s an fps first. Everything else is secondary.

So no “you controller players have this, this and this.” And vice versa. Halo is here for everyone.

I’m new to playing Halo on keyboard and mouse, and have done similarly to my performance with a controller. What I find is that most people still subconsciously think of playing Halo like a low-TTK game rather than a high-TTK game. Yeah, the strafe acceleration is obnoxious, but everything else is pretty balanced for both mouse and controller aim.

I play on PC but use a controller, I’ve had every Halo game on console, I had the PC port of Halo on PC but barely played it, I have bought the MCC on PC.

For me using a KBM always felt ‘wrong’ for Halo, despite it being a FPS. Some games for some reason I just feel work so well with controller. By comparison I’ve been playing Battlefield 2042 and Call of Duty: Vanguard with a KBM.

I’ve played a lot of Halo Infinite since the beta came out. I’ve completed all 20 of my weekly challenges including the final one for the visor. I’d say I’m an average player in terms of skill. For 4 vs 4 I’m usually in the top 3, for the big team battles I’m usually in the top half but rarely pushing the top players.

I’ve never once felt disadvantaged using a controller, I’m not saying I’m not at a disadvantage for all I know I am, but pretty much every time I’ve died I can safely attribute it to me just being in a sucky situation, not making the smartest moves, not having sufficient support around me etc.

I’ve never, ever, once felt “oh that guy had a KBM that’s why I’m dead”. Again, I’m not saying that hasn’t made a difference but it has never felt like that. I check my accuracy scores at the end of each game and typically I’m very near the top if not at the top. Maybe it’s because I tend to stick to the less exotic weapons, usually I try and go for AR and BR.

Nobody wants to sit on their couch using a mouse and keyboard

I went 31 and 11 earlier and I play on controller… are you sure it isn’t a YOU problem?

The biggest issue I have right now for crossplay is that the maximum controller sensitivity is about half as fast as it was in the flights and in previous titles… This makes being competitive against K/M at the high end when using a controller nearly impossible. It’s also made the game feel very sluggish to me and has significantly reduced my enjoyment… Which is really disappointing since I loved the way the flights felt once I dialed in my controls.

Positive it isn’t ONLY a me problem. The way that aim assist works in this game for controller is that it’s only active when strafing, I even have video proof if you need it. I will say, that since I don’t typically play shooters with little to no aim assist, that removing it from me objectively makes me a worse player. But I will immediately say this; it’s a Halo game, aim assist is part of it’s identity, and to change how it works fundamentally ruins people’s muscle memory built up around the series as a whole.

Preach it OP!

The controls on PC are absolutely disgustingly awful. I have always been a controller guy even on PC, but I cannot aim worth a -Yoink!- in this game.

The butter-smooth controls in MCC especially Halo 2 Anniversary are so good, that I am honestly all but ready to give up Infinite for good and just realize the only Halo I’m ever going to really enjoy is the MCC.

It is depressing to say that but the controls in this game are horrific.

The sensitivity options and how it works in this game is horrible, I don’t really get how they went from that same, familiar smoothness in MCC and the early flights to this; But something clearly needs to change. Plus not to mention how aim assist is activated, and the lack of input based matchmaking for casual playlists, and this game is a nightmare for controller users. And from what I can gather from people who use M&K, it isn’t much better for them either.

For those of you struggle to find good sensitivity and controller setting look at the thread I started called “Need help aiming in Infinite?” I go over a lot of settings to help those who feel it doesn’t feel like previous Halos or it just feels off.
