AI Splintered off copies or are they?

Throughout the entire Halo Universe cannon there are many accounts of AI splintering themselves off to make copies. Cortana did it many, many times throughout books and even in Halo 4 we see it towards the end.
When an AI splinters off and makes copies, it reminds me of how the circle of life is. Let me explain: A male and female of any species each gives so much off their DNA into their offspring making a splintered off version of the two who donated DNA(so to speak). Now if AI are so smart,(whcih according to the many many files of cannon they are), then an AI shouldn’t or wouldn’t need a partner to pass on themselves. Thereby proposing the question: Even though the splintered off copies of an AI are just that, could some of them become more? Today’s technology it would seem impossible but you give a couple hundred, thousand, or even hundreds of thousands then yes I think it would be possible for AI to form offspring so to speak.
Pros to this theory:

  • The 7 years that an AI is only supposed to live would no longer matter because their knowledge, emotions, thoughts, and experiences could be passed on to the offspring. - AI’s wouldn’t have to waste time learning everything the previous knew because it would already be passed on - More efficient AI’sCons: to this theory:

  • In some circumstances, it’s best the AI only last 7 years. Not all are stable from birth so to speak - With passes on knowledge AI would eventually get bored. Eventually would probably play mind games with living organisms. - More efficient AI’s means also more efficient at killing to and eventually they’ll question why they need us. Judgement Day for all living life like in Terminator.Thoughts or opinions towards this topic? And don’t just say that it’s not possible. In the Universe nothing is impossible just improbable till a viable solution is found to make it possible.

I’m pretty sure that’s not how AI splintering works. As software is copied or broken into pieces and reformed, it’s going to drop in quality. AI are no different. Take a look at the Ascendant Justice’s AI. Cortana encountered this AI during Operation FIRST STRIKE. Her observations indicated that it was likely a captured UNSC AI that had been copied to the point of being barely functional, due to some similar algorithms and its error-filled behavior.

And your comparison to biological processes doesn’t really work. AI splintering or copying is more akin to cell division, where a parent organism or cell copies and then splits off a genetically-identical copy of itself. But every time cell division occurs, an error is likely to occur. And as the cell divides repeatedly, errors begin to accumulate, and eventually it doesn’t work properly anymore.

I see your point but I was trying to make it more age friendly for players that might not have experienced such things yet. It also avoids a run in with the monitors who seem to be watching what i do alot lately.lol

I always got the impression that because of how complex AI are, that even if they made copies the copies wouldn’t be completely the same. Like how even though Cortana from 1-4 had developed a personality due to how she was made and her experiences, if she made a copy of herself there’s nothing to suggest that the same thoughts, opinions, or even memories would take priority in the mind of a new copy.
Maybe original Cortana and copy Cortana would appear to be identical at the beginning, but over time there would start to be some pretty big differences that eventually the two would be unrecognizable to each other except in appearance (unless the copy decided to change how she looked). And this can happen as quickly as a few hours from creation.

But this is all pretty much my own version of how AI work in Halo so please don’t take anything of what I said seriously. I don’t have any lore or anything backing this up. I just came up with it so that I can have original Cortana still be dead and separate from Reclaimer Cortana in my own fan fiction (and also so I can make a new Cortana to team up with John).

Anyone who cares enough about how the AI of Halo work probably has a high school education and I would assume they would thus know what cell division is.
And if they don’t, it’s not hard concept to explain and they get to learn something new.

I don’t see how this is relevant because I don’t think the monitors would care about a mention of cell division. And if you’re talking about it in regards to sexual and asexual reproduction, unless you’re still in 5th grade and still laugh at anything that sounds like ‘-Yoink!-’, there’s not really anything inappropriate about it.
That said, I probably shouldn’t really be discussing this.

Considering i’m 35 and have 2 kids of my own, i do know how -Yoink!- works. With the world being so…well a pansy form of itself lately the littlest of things or topics can disgust people without even trying. I see your point again though.
