What are your opinions about the AI and how difficult they were, as well as their general behavior? This thread is meant for talk about enemy AI, but friendly AI discussion is fine. What could be improved for Halo 5? I’m curious what you guys think as I haven’t formed my opinion entirely yet.
Generally they are OK (not great but ok), however they do make you cringe at times. For instance, the 'nade spamming is rediculous in the extreme. Also Prom. knights units having a teleport ability coupled with power weapons and high shielding makes them super duper tough in groups.
Could you explain what makes them ok but not great? I should have put this in the OP but I want this thread to be really informative. 343i members do look at this board and I want this thread to be of use to them!
Totally agree on you with the teleport thing btw, it’s a really cool ability, gives em that Forerunner feel.
ive beat the campaign on legendary twice the AI seem easy grunts, crawlers, jackels kill them with a headshot from a boltshot, dmr, pistollight rifle, etc watchers use a light rifles,or any long range weapon knights and elites use plasma pistol emp and then any shotgun or blast and wraiths use a rocket luncher along with a plasma pistol the game is easy once you find the AI weaknesses
One thing that really bothers me in the campaign is when you’re driving the Warthog and the AI gunner will keep shooting at something that’s already dead instead of moving on to other targets. This is particularly noticeable on the Reclaimer mission. My gunner took out the Wraith and then kept shooting at it even though there were two Ghosts shooting at us.
You may ask, why didn’t I man the gun and let the AI drive? The AI, especially on legendary, are terrible drivers.

They’re better in some areas but they’re dumbed down in others.
IMHO,
Characterization (animations):
CE > Halo 4 > Halo 3/ODST >= Reach > Halo 2
Characterization (dialogue):
Halo 2 > CE > Halo 3 > ODST > Halo 4 > Reach (“The Covenant are on Reach”)
Characterization (enemy performance):
CE > Halo 2 > Reach > Halo 4 > ODST > Halo 3
Characterization (ally performance):
Halo 2 > Halo 3 > CE > Halo 4 > ODST > Reach
Capability:
Halo 2 (Flood use vehicles, enemy Elites get on Hog turrets) > Halo 4 > ODST > Halo 3 > Reach > CE
Creativity:
CE > Halo 2 (the way they flank is just beautiful. They don’t immediately fire upon you so you might not even notice them) > Halo 3 > Halo 4 > Reach
Cheapness:
Halo 2 > Halo 4 >= Reach > Halo 3 > ODST > CE
On Crawlers:
I think it would be very interesting if crawlers acted more like a pack.
Below is an idea of mine for Halo 5
The Master Chief is skulking through a rocky area to get to a Forerunner complex in the distance. All of a sudden, the player hears a piercing screech, and out of nowhere 7 crawlers run at him. They’re faster than suicide grunts, but not as fast as infection forms. They don’t all run one after the other, they’re lined up side by side, and they jump over and around the rocks to get to the Chief. In the back, two sniper crawlers (they’re in Halo 4 already btw) try to take the MC out after he dispatches the 7 ones that ran toward him. Far in the background, an alpha crawler lurks, ready to attack the player. The alpha crawler should be fast, and have incredibly good AI. (Alpha crawlers are in Halo 4, again fyi.)
All I know is the Marines…
STILL CANT DRIVE WORTH HELL
Really, come on 343, It’s been 5 Halo titles. Can you make them drive a bit better then Kat? Hell, they drove better in Halo 2.
The Catch skull breaks the Campaign lol
The AI’s spam like no tomorrow so much you can in for the assassination so long as you’re careful haha
If Knights didn’t lose interest in your presence after ten seconds of hiding the difficulty would have been improved.
Also the grenade animation for the Elites is absurdly slow. Also whenever there is a ceiling their grenade lob hits it and plops the grenade right at their feet.
All in all the Covies felt downgraded from Reach in terms of intelligence, though one could ague this was made up for with the Prometheans. That is, until you learn how to fight them.
I also screamed at Marine gunners, who also seemed downgraded in intelligence (getting distracted by stray grunts when there’s a wraith ten feet away).
I’d like to add, if I was an Elite, and my shields were taken down, I would not pause to part my mandibles and roar at my enemy. I would immediately dive for cover. I don’t like how in Reach and sometimes in 4, Elites do this. Make it stop, please 343i. When every Elite does this, it really doesn’t make them seem intelligent.
When there’s no bottomless cliffs around, they just ram any nearby wraiths.
Thanks Kat.
I liked how they made enemies shoot your corpse like 100 times when you die. It got me angry so many times during solo legendary that i wanted to go and kill every single one of them. They did a good job there to make you hooked.
They seem okay, but I thought they would go around corners and look for you if you go behind cover or that the crawlers would try to corner you if your behind cover, but apparently not.
But a Marine in Land Grab of Spartan Ops killed me with a Gauss Turret shot when he tried to shoot a dead body -_- And in Mission 4, Marines kept getting in my way when I had a turret, mostly if they had a railgun, and they shot me in the back when my shields were down just to shoot a dead body but I was in the way.
The AI seemed just bad. In some areas the AI would just outright bulldoze me and others I’d see banshees chilling near a wall flying into it or Sangheili stuck on an obstacle and keep running in a general direction.
I found the AI a tad boring.

I notice on Legendary the enemies throw grenades as if the Catch skull is on
The covenant enemies are a tad bit too easy early on in the game but become harder midway through IMO.
However, Promethean class enemies are an interesting challenge. Especially the Knight classes.
Anyone notice how 343 upped the frequency of enemies shooting your dead corpse? Haha i thought that was funny and a bit extreme compared to past Halo games.
