343 should really make sure they get AI right.
There are a lot of AI fail vids going around, which can be very embarrassing for the developer. One of my old vids - that got featured in GameFails - show some failed AI coding that would seem very embarrassing to any coders in the industry.
I just hope 343 don’t mess it up too bad, because it can be a pretty important part of the game.
When you get a game like Halo, it is really difficult to get the AI to work for every situation. In Gears of War the AI work because there’s a fairly limited set of options availiable to the AI. In Halo, you’ve got to account for the physics and sandbox-esque gameplay. Frankly, the AI in combat are more or less fine. I think we can all agree it’s the driving that should be most invested in in regards to actually advancing it.
> You know, I still have yet to have Kat kill me with her driving. I even have her drive for me and she does fine.

> Jorge, Jun, and Emile on the other hand? Oh boy.

> Jorge has shot me for 30 seconds straight. Jun has shot me in the knee cap once and made me get killed by a Focus Rifle.

>
> Kat dodge roles into FRCs for me, and Carter killed two Hunters and a sword wielding General in CQC.
I’ve never had any unusual Noble AI issues. I’ve seen a Falcon hug a FRC; other then that its normal (Jun cant snipe at all, Emille Shotguns things from thirty feet away, etc)
> > Yeah, the AI in Reach was really sub-par. Mainly Kat.
>
> When it comes to driving, they got Kat spot on XD
Y’kno, it’s a proven fact that “Kat is no worse than any AI in the game”.
I think my favorite answer to this dilemma is “Why would you let the AI drive when YOU can?”
This is the point where you can admit Laziness has completely made it’s way into a video game.
Not for the fact that you’re using the AI to drive your drive-able portions of the game…but you’re complaining about it instead of doing it yourself.
I have let Kat or a marine drive many times and if anything, they just don’t take the shortcuts i do. They get a little stuck every now and then but they’ve never driven me off a cliff.
> I think my favorite answer to this dilemma is “Why would you let the AI drive when YOU can?”
Then you might as well ask, “Why would you let the AI use the turret when YOU can?”
The answer to this is, “Because I don’t want to get blown up by the two Revenants my AI ally is ignoring while trying to kill that lone Grunt cowering in fear and not posing a threat to me at the moment.” And that happens even more often than Kat happily driving down a cliff or stopping the Warthog right in front of a group of Covies so they don’t have such a hard time spamming your now stationary vehicle with grenades.

Well, that’s the beauty of it - It’s optional. Nobody is forcing one or the other and to be honest, I’m sure the opportunity for multiple seating in a 'Hog is aimed at Co-op. I’ve encountered just as many horrendous RL drivers/turreters than the AI.

So in other words, we get the option between a Urine Beer or a Turd Sandwich.

Agreed. Friendly AI has always been the weakest in Halo games. I think its because its fundamentally easier to have an enemy guard a position or attack as a group than create a friendly ally who will react and follow is a lot more difficult.
We’ve all seen crazy friendly AI behavior. Marines throwing grenades at Banshees in H1, Marines firing rocket launchers directly into walls in front of their faces in H2, Elites throwing plasmas at their comrades sitting right in front of them… And driving. Crazy mental driving.
