We’ve seen agent Locke in action in the recent trailer, and he is very good at his job.
But still we don’t know how he became a spartan, and why is he so good that his skills almost matches the chief’s? if not exceeding it, as seen in “all hail” trailer.
All we’ve seen in Halo: Nightfall, agent Locke is an experienced and a wise marine, yet it’s nothing close to what we saw in the most recent trailers.
When did he become a spartan? we should have at least seen a hint about his further training or augmentations in Halo: Nightfall.
What I’m trying to say is that 343 needs to show how did he became a spartan.
From a hardcore Halo lore fan.
Maybe Escalations will sort things out?

I hope so, but the announced upcoming stories so far are about a new spartan called “Spartan Tanaka” and the absolute record, but the previous issues had no mention of Locke.
It should be something they tell in the actual main story (Halo 5). At least I hope that when 343 is going to properly introduce a new main character, it happens in the actual game. It would be pretty unforgivable to outscore the proper introduction to a comic book series and then have Locke just appear in Halo 5 without any explanation on who he is.
A prologue mission with Locke would be nice, just like Arbiter in Halo 2

I agree. But based on what we’ve seen in halo 4, Thomas Lasky was first introduced in Halo: The Thursday War, then in the series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, so if you didn’t keep up with that, Lasky would just be like any other random character in Halo 4.
And I’m afraid that they’ll do the same with Locke.
A proper cutscene showing him joining the Spartan ranks and WHY he became a spartan, like Mist said, would be good.
In the “All hail” trailer, Chief’s armor has been hit with something that is not from a UNSC weapon, probably plasma or hard light, so maybe Locke is not better than Chief.

Now this would be good

this would be nice
I don’t think this is really a problem seeing as Master Chief had no backstory for at least his first two games and his backstory was never touched on in the games until Halo 4.

Maybe we should be able to expect more from a 2015 game than a 2001 game. Especially since Locke is supposed to be a character from a get-go and not just a semi-empty vessel. The reason Halo 4 has Chiefs backstory explained is because 343 didn’t want to deal with that type of hollow video game protagonist.
If they’re trying to portray chief through the eyes of a human they will very likely given Locke human qualities in game, as in, actually having a told back story of such.
Lasky’s backstory in game wasn’t really needed. Keyes and Miranda had minimal backstory because they were mostly side characters.
All to be worked out. Can’t wait.
