I’d like some feedback on my latest Halo 3 machinima. I’ve figured out that Halo 3 works better in some ways for machinima than Reach. Although I’m glad I chose Reach for my Noir series because it has that grainy, grungy look.
This was quite atmospheric and the detail that the Capture Card manages to pick up is amazing. It manages to capture even snow droplets from Snowbound.
But alas there are some things which I feel must be addressed.
1.) The transition from 00:20 - 0:22 looked really out of place. A better way to introduce this would have been to have the character crocuh off-screen but appear on-screen when he stands up.
2.) Focus-On-Point or Focus Blur is a very nice visual effect to use but I feel like you have used it too many times. These Focus Blurs should only really be used in introduction scenes. You used it with introducing the magnum but then you started to make the effect consistant and the effect ultimately loses its authencity at the end.
3.) The head-bobbing from 2:06 - 2:10 looked really out of place. It looks silly and I don’t think that is the kind of emotional cue you want from a melodramatic piece such as this.
4.) The pink filter to represent the feel of sunset does not go with the background. The Saturation and Brightness end up being far to bright and it doesn’t go with the surroundings objects and scenery in Snowbound.
6/10 - Makes up for some aspects in terms of mood of isolation and serenity but the over-use of effects such as the pink-filter and sub-par Body Acting don’t exactly make this a memorable piece. Its good but its not something that I would advise other people to watch.

> I just used shallow depth of field where appropriate. That is I used it whenever there was a foreground object very close to the lens. I just used it like it would be used on an actual camera

> I couldn’t figure out another way to express his disbelief at the situation without voices, so I tried to express it through body acting.

> I actually didn’t add any saturation to the scene at all. I did overexpose it a little bit just to add to the visual flair, but I guess it didn’t work as well as I thought.
Mood was great, and the capture card you used was impressive as well. Gonna have to second what Sangos said about the pink effect being a bit odd, though. It didn’t really strike me as a lighting or atmosphere change like I think it was intended to, just looked like an overlay. Perhaps that’s a concept you could experiment with a bit more in the future!
