I’ve been very outspoken about the new abilities and their detrimental impact on the Halo franchise. I HATED how the beta played. I HATED how Halo 4 played. I HATED how Halo Reach played. Because of that, I wasn’t prepared to give Halo 5 am honest chance. After playing the campaign, and a small sample of matchmaking, I’m not too prideful to say that I was wrong about some of the mechanics. I’m now OK with the thruster packs. If they were the only thing speeding up gameplay, I could live with them. I see a lot of complaints about the shooting, but that actually felt great to me. Maybe it was updated before I started playing, I’m not sure about that. To me, it felt the most like classic Halo and better than the beta. One thing I really have to praise 343 on is the vehicle handling. That felt the most fluid and smooth since the vehicles in Halo CE.
I still feel that the sprinting is an awful addition to the series. It truly does more harm than good to the flow of the game. ADS/smartscope still feels jarring and uncomfortable, and I’ve lost kills because of the unnecessary hands blocking the bottom half of the screen when using the pistol.
Ground pound, Spartan Charge, and slide turned out to be utterly useless. I used them a grand total of 0 times(aside from when the campaign forces you to charge through barriers). In fact, I don’t even know what button you press to slide. These mechanics added nothing to the game but clutter and a small pause when you try to melee in the air.
Clamber was by far the most annoying mechanic(even more annoying than sprint because of how it forces itself into the game). The jump height was noticeably nerfed in the campaign to force you to use it. Its not an addition to the game when you take away something else to make room for it. At least sprinting is an option you can choose not to do. Choosing not to clamber leaves parts of the maps inaccessible. I worry that 343 won’t get the message about how bad this is when all the sprint topics are taking away attention from this problem. In multiplayer, it was irrittating to have to drop my gun to get up to a ledge that you should be able to simply jump to, especially when it seemed to trigger on its own for very low ledges that don’t need clamber even with the nerfed jump height. Any time the game rips control away from the player, it is not a good thing.
I’m the campaign, when I saw firsthand the enemy frame rate problems people talked about at launch, I was stunned at how noticeable and jarring it was. This was not a good trade-off for losing split screen. I’m aware that 343 had already gotten the message about their bonehead call to remove split screen, but… good lord…
Verdict: thrusters, shooting, and vehicle mechanics are fine. All of the other bull-yoink- needs removed from Halo 6. I’ll end up buying a used copy of Halo 5 at some point. But I still won’t buy it new. I’d rather not contribut a whole sale to 343’s numbers because of the problems the game still has. I’d rather a single sale be split between me and whoever first bought the copy I end up with.
Sprint doesn’t ruin the flow of the game. You purists gotta let that go.
You should’ve given the ground pound and shoulder charge a try in MP, very fun/awesome when you pull off a ground pound.
I feel like you’re being a tad nit-picky.
I think if you played more, you’d see that the shoulder charge and ground pound are both useful - they’re just not things you use all the time (nor are you supposed to). As for ADS and sprint, they really don’t ruin the flow of the game (in my opinion at least). Sprinting is risky, and it’s not easy to sprint away from a gunfight you’re losing. And ADS? Honestly, I haven’t felt the need to ADS that much with weapons I normally wouldn’t zoom in with (like an AR, or a shotgun) - and it really makes little difference once bullets are flying and you’re getting descoped all the time. I’d still say that a vast majority of my kills come from what I guess we’ll now have to call “hip-firing.”
Sprint speeds up gameplay, so does the shoulder charge and ground pound(to a point), also if you didn’t hold the “A” button you wouldn’t be clambering. Or better yet change the clambering controls so you need to double tap “A” to use it if it bothers you so much.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I have never occurred any lag of frame drops in the campaign or MP. It looks really smooth and the graphics were amazing.

Neither have I, but I have noticed that enemy character models have a funky look to them. They move like old school Doom characters. It doesn’t really bother me, but they aren’t 60fps character models.

The further away you are from a moving enemy or player, the choppier they get. They start to look like old stop-motion. It’s not a big deal, but once you notice it, you can’t stop seeing it. I didn’t notice it for a while until I saw a Crawler running in the background on Meridian. It’s not an exaggeration or a made-up thing, it’s a technique used to keep the frame rate at a solid 60fps.

nope they move at 30 fps. It does remind me of games 10 yrs ago lol
Complaining about clamber and how the jump height is nerfed? They lowered the jump height to make it a little more real. Clamber is something I don’t even notice anymore.

Sprint changes the entire flow of Halo. There are so many posts about this and I’ve posted many times describing how it changed the flow of Halo. The so called “purists” are just trying to point out what made Halo different then every other FPS. Oh well, it will never be the same, I’m glad I have MCC, so that I can enjoy CE.

I disagree with your opinion. The additions of the thruster pack and sprint were highly necessary to the series and are extremely fun to use. If I want to play halo 2 or 3 then I will fire up mcc. This isn’t 2001 anymore and halo 2 and 3 feel extremely slow and out dated.

Actually you “purists” are here to whine about Halo isn’t the same as Halo 2 anymore. And what made and still makes Halo different is the fact that it is an Arena Shooter in a world where most people play Class Based Shooters. Something Halo 5 focuses on even more now. I have yet to hear anybody give an actual explanation of how sprint ruins gameplay. All I hear is “It’s not in Halo 2/3” “It slows gameplay” and the later, when questioned about it they can’t come up with a good answer. I have been playing Halo since the days of Combat Evolved, and I am glad that it actually has Evolved these 14 years later instead of staying the same. And you are right, Halo will never go back to being Halo 2, so stick with your Halo 2 PC and Halo: MCC thanks
I have no problems with Halo 5. Is it a perfect game at launch? No. Will it get better so that people can say that it’s not as good a previous games which had a lot of support and updates years after they came out? Yes. Personally, I enjoy the faster pace of the game compared to the camping nightmare that was the previous titles. Some of the abilities may seem excessive to some, but the nice thing about that is you don’t have to Spartan Charge or Pound if you don’t want to (though I will concede that Sprint is kind of necessary now) so if you don’t like those features, don’t use them.
Dood get over the whole sprint thing…I love halo, have since CE but I love sprint and the other additions to the game. Things need progression or you’re just going to be playing halo 2 forever. If you give H5 more time I bet your feeling would change.

You know, there is a reason why Halo 2 and Halo 3 might be the most played Halos out of the entire franchise. It might be because they were unique and different than everything else at the time, and still are compared to Halo 5, which feels like the newest installment in the fast paced, twitch shooter genre.

Again, go back to Halo 2 PC or MCC. If you want to play the same game for 20 years. Halo is still the most unique game on the market.

Maps are much larger, escapability is much easier, double melees, makes the game more about movement than gunplay, makes jumps require Sprint to complete instead of just jumping. There are so many more reasons as to how Sprint ruins the flow of Halo. What makes Sprint good for Halo, it’s not a twitch shooter, you say we have no arguments for why Sprint is bad, what are yours for why it’s good? All I ever here is I’m a spartan I should be able to sprint or it feels faster. That feels faster reason is an illusion because the maps are so big. You can walk from one base to another in previous Halos just as fast as you can Sprint to them in Halo 4 and 5.

Except those games eventually will age and multiplayer matches will become difficult to find. I would rather that a new Halo game would be made that plays similarly to the original Halo games, while also having new interesting things to do in the game. That is what Halo 2 did after Halo CE, and that is also what Halo 3 did after Halo 2. And no, Halo is not the most unique game on the market. It has fallen into the well of genericness.
