Little background on me, I’m new to forums but been with the series since 3 and became a huge fan going back to play all halos and even 4 and here we are. Tbh, I had fun. The story was pretty good with some moments and dialogue that for me was interesting and made me think that’s pretty cool way to bring in old characters or expand the lore. The ending was bittersweet but the core gameplay kept me going and I took my time with Intel and exploring the non-linear maps for nooks and crannies. (Weapon variants, vehicles, collectibles etc.) it’s a cool way to implement theses ways of doing missions and its always welcomed on a legendary playthrough or just another crack at the story missions. It’s works well with co-op and different ways to fight enemies. Find a sniper cache and have headshot fun, shotgun variant with plasmas makes grunt killing fun. But since the update enemies seemed to be tougher and really made me have to think things through and what weapons and resources are at my disposal. So ordering my squad of AI “special” Spartans to cover fire me while making a run for a Rocket launcher made me smile as their were layers to a FPS that had solid combat. The squad idea is nice but it’s the downfall. Ok if they kept the order command thing it would be okay since my AI teams mates can be bullet bags but back in December when I played I cringed how bad the AI was but I admit the update has fixed it to a point… And they did move on their own and killed enemies or flanked, sometimes they would stand there and daydream. Which would make me have to order them to do something like pick up this or go there. It’s cool they added this making single play more easy as you can decide where you want the squad to ride or use in combat. The other secret areas for the caches were a nice touch but they could add more. And that revive system still bugs me , if they removed that and just did the squad order command option. I would be fine since I wouldn’t have to worry. Mobility and gunplay feel great, love thrusting and jumping to reign death from above made me feel like a badass. Even if I do miss the good cover and shoot firefights from the old. But it’s these innovations I enjoy. The story wasn’t perfect but it was a set up for Halo 6 which I saw a mile away but still, missions had me busy and enjoyed the sections later on as it was Halo 3 encounters with ultra speed. Cortana being evil made me feel what the f**k but then remembering the decomposer and how similar Didact and cortana are in this game made me have the revelation that cortana or a version or part of her must’ve combined with the Didact in the decomposer and created a entity mixing cortana’s now enchanced abilities and the didact’s hatred and retribution to create a last ditch but powerful effort to carry out his plans again. For all we know the real cortana could be out there or dead. But let me know what y’all think about that. Not perfect but still enjoyable and good fun. Multiplayer has me busy and I’m excited for Halo 6. Just want to show a positve opinion. But I have some things they shouldn’t do in Halo 6, no revive system, build on the command system or don’t have a redundant one, be more clear on pacing on story and character development, I enjoyed Blue team and Osiris since I read all books and other lore media to understand the chemistry and I really liked the Spartan characters, Dr. H and Palmer need to be more fleshed out tho they were so boring this time. And please more time with chief, I enjoyed playing Locke and his side of story but come on MC is what makes halo halo!!! Still a good edition but I really feel like this one was a good filler for a big setup on Halo 6. I enjoy where 343 is innovating and taking the series with expanded lore and weapons and the mobility system but they need to be consistent with it and not alienate fans with still unless it can be explained. Just happy it looked amazing and was at 60 fps. All and all I’m happy I got a Xbox one for this while back because at least Halo is still the best FPS exclusive on market and a multiplayer giant in the Xbox community. Decent campaign, great multiplayer. Tell me what y’all thought, no negative comments or things unless it’s constructive criticism, plus I did this on phone since my laptop is not working so please forgive the choppy and messy structure of post.
I too am on a phone, so I’ll keep my response short.
Criticisms:
- Wasted opportunity by either killing or not fleshing out characters, is Jul 'Mdama, Warden Eternal, and Blue Team.
- Cortana becoming evil is only there for shock value, it comes out of nowhere. Plenty of theories exist about this, but none can really claim supremacy when the game itself provides little in the way of hints.
- The story does not sync at all with the Hunt the Truth series or any other form of advertising for Halo 5. Those all present a story of Chief going rouge and exploring the ideological differences between Locke and Chief. They talk of Chief being declared dead so the UEG can save face. Very real concerns over Chief being a traitor are raised. All meaningless and barely broached upon in the game.
- The Created as a faction suffer from Cortana’s problem, they come out of nowhere and make little sense. Cortana rants of human oppression towards AIs, but the lore barely touches on this and the game doesn’t set it up outside of Cortana’s claims. It’s a poor set up for what might be a long term enemy.

I think you bring up good points in the story. After awhile of thinking about it it has flaws and plot holes. Even with this, I’ve enjoyed more than Halo 4 even if H4 did have a slightly better story. I love the expanded universe included and the data logs an open areas for engagements and secret areas for special power weapons. Which I love makes coop online fun everytime playing and go back searching. It’s a campaign with great scope and action but lacking but still cool expanded story. I would put it around number 5 as my favorite Halo. If you want I can give you my top 5 list.

This right here is my biggest beef with the campaign.
Well that, and being lied to that Locke isnt the main character. Sure he’s not 343i, we only play as him and his team’s cardboard personalities (Buck to a lesser extent) 75% of the game.
