AFK/AFC (Away from Keyboard/Away from Controller)

I believe MCC is due for an update to the matchmaking system. Now i’m not talking about a gigantic overhaul or something that requires an absurd amount of work that is simply too much to ask. I believe we need a button in the post game menu to continue matchmaking afterward.

Nearly every time i play MCC online I encounter at least one to three players standing idle in the corner aiming off into oblivion with no signs of life. This means one of two things is happening.

A) People find a match and realize soon after they have to use the porcelain throne.

B) People are simply leaving their Xbox on after a match and walk away from the controller leaving them in endless matchmaking.

If the issue is B then there is a simple fix. A post game ready check. Simply press [insert button here] to continue searching for a match-made game. That is really all. If a player fails to hit [insert button here] they are to be sent back to the lobby to choose a playlist. This would really prevent the amount of players remaining AFC in all playlists.

Am I really just that unlucky or does anyone else have this issue?

This isn’t likely to be the case. MCC has a system in place that detects idle players during queue. If you go too long without controller input while searching, it won’t put you into a match. Idle players in MCC matches are most likely being intentionally idle, not accidentally idle.

343 prioritizes one think when it comes to matchmaking, that is fast search times. If there are afks, there will be faster match times. There is very little skill matching, that is only getting worse as the population drops. You can’t back out once you start searching (unless you quit the game or restart your xbox), sometimes you can be forced into another game, especially if you spend too long looking at the stats and miss the window to back out. With lengthy quit bans it is often a time saver to go AFK in a game you don’t want to play in order to get another game sooner. While I don’t agree with the practice, it does make sense from their perspective.

There is a system that backs you out of searching if you go AFK for awhile, but it is very inconsistent. Sometimes it occurs just 10 seconds after searching, controller in hand. Other times when actually AFK it doesn’t come up. I usually switch to microsoft edge between games, browsing the internet, I check back frequently, but sometimes (rarely) I do miss the first 5-20 seconds of a game. Never had the system back me out of searching when away. It only ever happens when I am looking at the screen.

But honestly, I don’t mind AFKs, they participate about as much as a really bad player and get just as many kills. They deserve the right to be there. 343 should implement a system that if you are AFK in game for more than 30 seconds, your spartan switches to his AR and runs in a straight line, shooting. They would blend right in, no one would even know they’re AFK. I jest.

I lost it at “the porcelain throne” while reading that OP. But on a serious note, there IS a system that’s supposed to stop AFK players, but it is very inconsistent. The “AFK flag” doesn’t appear to work if a player doesn’t have their xbox “focused” on the game, and instead has an xbox menu or even another app open.

I definitely agree that there should be a postgame “party up” system like in Halo 3. It would not only allow people to find more active players more easily by simply playing matchmaking, but it would help alleviate the AFK problem as you stated.
