Hey everybody. I wanted to put this out here to see if people agree with my advice to Neil Davidge about how to make Halo 5’s soundtrack better than Halo 4’s and possibly other Halos.
Something that everyone can agree with in terms of Halo music is that every track was memorable and recognisable. You could tell each song apart and easily be able to hum along to them in some way. This is something Neil Davidge didn’t pull off as well as Marty, and the reason is simple.
The melodies themselves are not as defined. The part of a song that makes it memorable is it’s melody. I mean, you can easily recognise tracks like the Mario Bros. theme right? Dr. Wiley stage from Megaman 2? The Zelda theme song? These are all great and memorable tracks! Why? Because back in the NES days, they could only really have a melody. You couldn’t put much depth on the less significant layers of the song, so they had to concentrate solely on the melody of the song which is the part of the song that the brain recognises the most. But the problem with THOSE songs is exactly that. They lack DEPTH. They all had ONLY a melody and no other layers. This is what makes the Halo theme song so great. It has a solid melody and all the other layers of music were recognisable in some way and helped the track. It had the depth AND the memorability.
What I see in Neil’s work, is just depth. Yes, there are a few tracks here and there that actually do have a solid melody along with depth, Nemesis and To Galaxy being prime examples. But the other tracks are mainly just full of depth and made only for the purpose of adding to the story, which is fine, but doing both is something that really makes a good soundtrack great!
If Neil is able to do this with Halo 5 then the soundtrack will be absolutely amazing! I feel it could easily be one of the best soundtracks in Halo if he does that!
