Admit it, we were wrong about armor customization

Now that we’ve had a week of Halo 5 and gotten a sense of where the game’s strengths and weaknesses are, let’s rewind for a minute and remember where the community stood pre-launch about a certain feature: Armor customization.

I remember in the weeks leading up to launch, tons of people were pretty bummed about what became of the customization for Halo 5. I’ll admit I was one of the people that was not pleased to hear that we would be getting less fields to customize than in past games.

Now that I have my hands on the game and having spent hours in the customization menu, I can definitely say that I was wrong. The customization feels truly effective now, like you are able to make your Spartan look legitimately unique. I credit that to the departure of building each armor component (head shoulders chest arms etc.) to be compatible with a single base, which really limited the shapes and sizes a particular set-up could take on. Now that each suit is built from the ground up, you can choose from tons of unique shapes and sizes that really change your Spartan’s appearance in a notable way. I really dig it.

So how about you guys? Do you find yourself enjoying the level of customization in Halo 5? Were you one of the people hating on the changes before the game launched and if so do you still feel the same way?

I was pretty bummed at first, but now I think it’s for the best.
Not a fan of a lot of the armor skins, though.

Armor customization doesnt work.

simply because you get forced into that ugly neon red or blue in any thing but FFA.

I was bummed out by the beta at first but then I remembered. Most of us used nothing else but Mark IV arms, shoulders, and legs in Halo 4 due to most of those armor types are strikingly familiar. I may be wrong but that’s what I saw.

No, since its based on RNG loot you’ll like the exact same as someone else until you get said armor that’s if you even like the number of armors being provided. So saying this is acceptable even though this is just a trade off from armor customization doesn’t warrant the lack of being able to do stuff in previous Halo’s. I mean they even messed up the colors how could they mess something so simple plus not provide additional colors than just two, could of been 4 different colors by now that actually matched with your primary.

Sorry but they could of done so much more but opted out on the easier choice instead of giving player freedom. Even customs is limited to online only (don’t say why would you play offline anyway there’s no split screen, would like to play the game regardless. ) and would liked more options than being limited.

I’m not saying the unlocking system is perfect by any means. I see that as a problem stemming from the REQ system.

I am strictly talking about the armor piece selection system. I think that it has been streamlined for the better in terms of creating a unique look.

Fine go shoot at walls by yourself.
(I think it’s fine for online only custom games because a lack of split screen, but forge should be able to be played offline.)

I think it has some of the best customization in the Halo series. Alot of the sets are really unique and interesting. Not all of them are good though. I think once they add the mk IV/V and some more badass sets it might end up being the best of any Halo.

I’ve always used gull sets so I didn’t really mind, that being said the armor customization is fine

Was pretty bummed about losing the various customization options… but after a week of playing I realized I can look past it.

What I can’t look past, unfortunately, is the color options.
Colors a much too bright for me. I liked the Reach color scheme the most. 4 was pretty bright, but Halo 5 is too much for me.
I don’t know if they’re going to an MLG approach with it or not. You know, brighter colors- easier to see- but, we’re not all competitive players. If they want to brighten the colors in matchmaking thats ok I can look past that. But I miss the darker color schemes. Maybe 343 could add a saturation option, to make the colors a little grittier?

if not that, at least let us change the color of the white details?

Its not that, I would like being able to do multiplayer stuff like forge since customs is limited atm. I wouldnt be able to forge when Xbox live crashes, internet just decides to disconnect , or just being able to explore the maps with the option of offline. If you think that’s okay fine… you don’t want more out of the game that had those features previously.

The customization system is not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but nearly everything I’ve worn through Halo 3 and up has been done away with: Asymmetrical shoulder pieces, Valkyrie sword with the Cog secondary, and EOD helmet. Honestly, a lot of my dissatisfaction toward the system can be reversed if they just put back in the EOD helmet. Not really digging the customization for emblems either, but to 343’s credit, these have been the best emblems in Halo yet.

My own unique Spartan was created in halo 3 and reach. These are pre created and put together sets that are not my own. Granted, Carters and Emils shoulder armors were kinda … huge… still, they are not allowing customization, it is all pre planned with a few tweeks we can throw in.

I have nothing to admit I never hated them to begin with nor do I hate them now.

Yeah and I just said that forge should be offline.
oh I get it, if you want to test out maps then you need to play customs, which requires online.

I enjoy the customization option. They have plenty of different armor types to chose from. Not sure if there was a need to add different visors. Though it is a nice touch. As for the color scheme. I am happy with it. Considering most people play team matches in Halo so you are either Red or Blue. Having to details or a huge color customization function would be lost for a large percentage of game play.

What took me by suprise was the fact that I have to (sorta) buy armor. By that i mean i have to use REQ and hope for the pieces I want. Unless I’m doing it wrong but thats my understanding so far.

All this talk that it’s all based in RNG. Honestly I’m fine with it. For the most part in Warzone, I rarely see anyone in the same Armor (except for Mark VI)

But honestly, unlocking armor is only RNG for so long. Once you get the last permanent unlock. Then the RNG is out the window.

I lay out the best way to go about getting everything here.

The Easiest and cheapest method to get all unlocks

What I’m really enjoying is the fact that you have to work towards armour unlocks by gaining req points. I feel like there is an actual sense of purpose in playing the game now. I look forward to that gold pack every time I hit 10k req!
