Adbout Halo's Identity

Hi there,

i’m quite new to the halo thing and as i got it right, there’s some controversity about the direction Halo takes/took with H4/5. Mainly the sprint and the ADSish Zoom introduced by H5 seem to be a hot topic, because feared to be copy&paste attemp to bring the CoD crowd over. This made me ask a question, which i of course, as a Halo noob, can’t answer. So i redirect it to the vets here:

If you’re afraid, that ADS and Sprint make Halo to just another “CoD-Clone”, what do you think made this game so special in the first place? After all, ADS and also the abillity to srpint are nothing more than mechanic, which give you more dynamic elements to choose from ingame. ADS, at least in the common way, trades (animation)time and moveablility versus precision. A sprint makes you more felxible in building up tactical maneuvers, which trades movement precission against speed.

Comming from Q3A and UT, none of this games would imo become another CoD, if they got Sprint and ADS. I think it’s more about accepting and trying to incooperate good mecanics in a way, your beloved franchise can grow and compete another decade.

While beeing a halo noob, I’m no noob to shooters like i said before. I played a variety of shooters across the years, loving to fight against other players online in a sometimes more, sometimes less competitve way. And so, i was also eager to pick up the MCC with my first Xbox to get part of the Halo experience. And, to be honest, i was shocked when i felt ready to take part in some match made games. Persoally, and please don’t hate me for it, i don’t think the some mechanics are antique, further more bad designed and never repaired. I honestly made me think, that Halos MP got so big because Halo2 was the first big shooter, which brought Onlineplay to the consoles. Again, please don’t hate me for speaking this way about something you love so much, i just try to explain how it might feel for someone picking up a Halo5 which is like Halo2.

(mainly speeking of H2:A)
The movement mechanincs feel really bumpy and unresponsive, especially the jumping, on which you can’t even decide the height and also does the the collision feedback (floating on egdes). Maybe i’m not in long enough in, but the weapon balance seems broken, since all you see is BR and the Powerweapons. i don’t know, why the plasma gun and needler are lieing around, because i never see someone picking them up (except me, as a poor soul thinking this would give me some advantage in diffrent situations). There would be more, but some things are probably just personal preferences like it was irritating, that it seems that there are diffrent respawn timers for the same items across diffrent maps ( while i really like the idea, that powerwepons trigger the respawn on their own despawn). But the named things just feel bad in comparism to other games. CoD is not very popular theese days, but controll mechanics wise, you have to admit, it just works great. Balance is a tough topic, but i think beeing on the safe side, when stating, that the old Q3A had allready a system, where any (pickup able) wepoan made sense for diffrent encounter types (I also really miss the dmg dealt/got stats. Can’t stand this killing blow obsession).

So, I’m really glad 343 is thinking of how to improve halo and making risky steps in that direction, because H5’s MP looked really sweet and made me want to go back to the arena style. But if it will play the way H2:A feels, i probably would drop it imidiately, because it really doessn’t feel like something you have to get aquinted with; it just feels broken. To be hones, the only reason i play H2:A right now, is because i want to get into the halo flow to be ready for the “real” experience (and i really don’t like H4s loadout attempt). I also really don’t want to replace the vets, i honestly hope we get a game we all want to play and so, are able to face each other on the battlefields. Nintendo named it “Bridge Games” and while it was another context, i really like the term. New players get invited to check out the Halo way (and also to endure the brutal ownage, before achiving some positive spreads) and the vets get invited, to test for them self, that not nesseccary all things halo didn’t make until now, are bad things per se.

So maybe, we all meet on the mid

With regard to your statement on weapon balance, Halo has always been about your main utility weapon (Pistol in CE / BR in other games) and power weapons. If you don’t like it, I don’t really know what to say, although I would like for the other weapons in the sandbox to serve a useful purpose in the game other than as map decorations. I think 343i are really trying to make every weapon in Halo 5 useful in its own right, but we have yet to see every weapon that will be included in the final game. We’ll just have to wait and see if they all have their own niche in the balance of things or if some weapons will be picked up once and never again.

And I love what they’re doing with Halo 5, the difference in MP quality between 4 and 5 is astronomical.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Halo 4’s MP, loved the campaign. I love the direction they’re going with Halo 5, I’m onboard with all we’ve seen so far.

I love the point you’re making, about being the guy picking up Halo 5 and it being his Halo 2. The industry is changing, Halo is changing, and this time for the better

Oh look another thread about how ADS and Sprint doesnt belong in Halo. Anyone tired of beating this dead horse yet?
