Actual Constructive Feedback for H5 Multiplayer

I’ve read lots of forum topics that complain about Halo 5, but say nothing about how to make it better. These are my opinions from someone who has played Halo at a high level since Halo 1. I’m also middle of the road between a Halo Purist and someone who believes the game needs to evolve. For example, I think Sprint is awful in Halo and not having it actually makes it different than other games which is a nice change. I also like Clamber in the game and I don’t think ADS has impacted gameplay at all. Anyway, Halo 5 is much better than Reach and Halo 4 so thank you for that 343. It’s not Halo 1, 2 or 3 but it’s acceptable to me at this point. It’s the only one in which AR/Pistol starts are actually acceptable to play. I had to wait for BR starts to come out in order to play the others. However there is plenty of room for improvement so here I go:

  • Reduce starting grenade count to 1. This simple change will be enough to balance grenade use in this game. - I’m sure you will fix the ranking system eventually, in the meantime, provide a prompt for those who are “eligible” for a de-rank, asking them if they would like to de-rank. This will make everyone happy, those who don’t want to de-rank can say No and those who want to be placed in the correct rank can say Yes. This can be provided either after losing a game or by highlighting the playlist and clicking a button on the controller with a description on the screen as “De-Rank”. And this should also be a simple enough solution to implement. - Remove Breakout from Team Arena and from the HCS. There is already an entire game type dedicated to it and it does not take any skill in Halo. If you want a skilled, one life, round based game then play counterstrike. It is however a fun variant to the halo playlist, much like SWAT. Breakout’s skill level is closer to SWAT then CTF or Slayer. The other solution is to create an HCS playlist that does have Breakout and then have a Team Arena playlist that does not have Breakout. - Create a BR start Team Arena. This results in an AR/Pistol Team Arena and a BR start Team Arena making all players happy. It also provides more variation on how to play the game which is greatly needed. - Remove or reduce the chance for Fathom and Rig to be selected in Slayer. Neither of these maps play well in Slayer. - Rig needs the spawn points changed because the team that spawns Catwalks/Red Nest has a huge advantage, it also needs more BRs or DMRs on the map. Regret only plays well with BRs so replace Carbines and DMRs on the map with BRs. In beta Regret played BR starts very nicely but AR/Pistol starts were unbearable. Fathom is just a bad map across the board, no way to salvage it. - Add Truth, Empire and Eden to the Slayer Playlist. - Reduce Free for All from 8 players to 6. Remove Orion from Free for All entirely. Do not allow someone on Pegasus to spawn on the OS!!! (I mean really, that’s just dumb). Add Truth, Eden and Empire to the Free for All rotation. Consider occasional BR starts in the rotation to mix things up. - Add a Ranked Team Doubles and Ranked Team Objective ASAP. - Add Social Playlists ASAP! The following playlists should be in the social playlists permanently: Slayer, Team Objective, Multi-Team, Team Snipes, Team Action-Sack, Infection. My friends and I would gladly give up Breakout and Team Swat for any of the playlists listed here so if you feel you need to remove playlists because of some dumb logic where we can’t have all these playlists then start with these two. - Aim Acceleration - I have not encountered any issues with aiming. It is currently the only thing in Halo 5 that allows for a skill gap. If changes are needed due to bugs then please make the minimum changes needed to fix the bug, if you change this too much, the skill gap will greatly close due to how short time to kill is in this game.Additional Opinions based on other forum posts I’ve read:

  • If you listen to the ridiculous outcry to increase radar distance then every playlist must be changed to BR starts. One of the biggest reasons the AR/Pistol start is somewhat acceptable in this game is because the reduced range of radar balances the matches by allowing you to use map movement and level positioning to your advantage against someone who may have a better weapon then you. Also guess what, you have eyes, ears and a brain so you shouldn’t need radar on these small maps anyway, Halo is 10 times better without radar. Radar promotes cheap tactics such as pre-grenading before the enemy is in your Line of Sight, camping and nullifying any map movement strategies to outsmart your opponents. - Remove radar from Team Arena so you don’t ruin every playlist after you eventually give in to the casual fan base (who won’t be playing halo a month from now anyway) who want the radar range increase. - There needs to be at least some armor that is unlocked by actually doing stuff such as completing the campaign or playing lots of multiplayer matchmaking. To leave everything up to chance is just a poor choice. I’m not one who cares that much about armor customization, but I am someone who likes to earn things, not pray to the RNG Gods. Heck, you would have been better off just charging people for the armor customizations that they want. Even that would be a better formula than what you have now.Additions based on comments:

  • Remove instant spawns from SWAT. - Re-evaluate spawn points on maps for SWAT. - Ensure FileShare comes with the Theatre update in December.

One thing I would like to see worked on is SWAT spawns. I have had several times where I go on a kill streak or get a triple kill and then die only to literally spawn into death several times in a row before I can even more. I actually spawned at the death point and died instantly a few times. Outside of that I would be doing much better k/d wise which is important to the team. Just do not like losing a very close match like that. One match was 9-1 and died 7 straight times like that. No joke.

Overall I find the game pretty good and have no other complaints.

Just going to post this op sprint isn’t half bad its actually usefull the spartan abilities are fine the fact all players start with ars and magnums is good 343 was smart to do that the dumb moves on there part was the whole gun sight / aim feature to make weapons more accurate no other halo game used that not even 4 the only weapons that were aimed or used a scope were precision weapons and some power weapons the fact 343 changed that has truly detrimented halo 2nd the pistol it functions the way it did in halo ce worst move they could have made as peeps kill 90% of the time with it the br functions like a dmr now and is no longer 3 round burst halo. Sad to say isn’t halo anymore and is now just like call of duty

Some good points in there. But I do disagree about the aiming issue. It feels totally off to me and I have played halo since ce and have a decent record in this game, so please don’t respond with “GiT GUD!”. It is my only gripe with the multiplayer other than the lack of rifle spawns.

Constructive feedback is not welcome here. -Yoink!- rants only please.

I won’t say get good because quite a few people feel the same way, I feel it should be investigated but 343 needs to be careful not to change it too much so we go back to halo 4 where there was no skill gap. I’m just trying to make a point that they need to be careful with this one.

I hate how only threads like “Halos dead” “This game is garbage” “343 lied again” get pages upon pages of comments, while no one ever bothers to even check well reasoned threads containing intelligent, constructive criticism such as this one.

I agree with your complaints, but I would also add Fileshare, better lobby and increased radar range in warzone to the list.

Thank you! I know there are others who feel the same way about all the popular dumb forum posts. I forgot about fileshare! In a way though, the DVR on Xbox one replaces that, especially with the connect to say “Xbox record that” and maybe it will come when theater is added. How would you improve the lobby?

I agree with OP. Halo 5 is a much improved game compared to Reach and H4, but there are some issues that can be addressed in future updates to make this a really great game. Many of the points that were brought up in your post, I completely agree with. I see a lot of posts complaining about H5 being to competitive, but in reality all they are asking for is a social playlist that H3 perfected. H3 had and abundant amount of playlists for the casual and the competitive gamer, never understood why this was not followed by the other games.

To add on your ranking bullet, the initial 10 ranking games need to be addressed. I had a team of four who played the arena playlist and won all 10 games, but we were ranked all in Diamond 1. Not sure how this is possible, but the only explanation is because my teammates are very close in skill, none of use went super positive because we were all around 10-14 kills per game. Then later on in the day, I was playing team arena with just one other teammate and we randomly got a teammate who was in Onyx and we check this person’s stats out. This person had a negative KDA, (didn’t know that was possible) and only won 2 of the 10 initial games. This issue needs to be addressed because that person will be discouraged after being matched with people way out of his/her league, as well as make that person’s random teammates matched game lopsided because of the skill that this teammate is currently at. I agree that people should be eligible to derank from a rank tier, because it seems that the initial ranking is not working as intended.

Currently FFA, might be one of the most frustrating FFAs out of any Halo. The maps are not well designed for it, as well as the spawn locations for these maps. The amount of people in this game type needs to be reduced. I also agree that 6 people would play much better than 8.

  • I can’t help - but for me it sounds you are really bad at breakout. Otherwise you wouldn’t falsely claim that there isn’t skill required in Breakout, because its one of the most Skillbased Modes now in Halo… if you can’t deal with it that Halo meet Counter Strike, it’s your Problem, but its an HCS Mode for Fact and should stay… because only it doesn’t hit your tastes doesn’t mean its an Mode for noobs which shouldn’t be HCS… but i find there should be an Team Objective Playlist as well!
  • Team Arena mirrors HCS( so Breakout as well) AR/PIstol Starts should stay, but a social playlist for BR would be acceptable…
  • About the earning thing, i would say, there should be a way to unlock specific things with Achievments/Challenges as well, but “Everything” should be still earnable due the REQ Packs…
-Pre-grenading a cheap tactic? When should i use my granade then, when i’m shot in the Face -.-? Also removing radar wouldn’t change it at all, because i pre-grenade because of steps which i hear with me ears not because of the Radar. Or do you say, they should also remove Movement-Sounds to stop pregrenade. But i agree, radar-range should stay like it is now. Its perfect.

But with the rest i agree. Also they should add the function to reconnect if you loss the Connection. I kinda find it stupid that my team have to lose because of connection lost. Also it would filter out Leavers etc…

I totally agree with everything in this post !
I’d just add something : remove instant respawn from SWAT.

My team was the same way, we won all 10 arena matches and got Diamond but saw those with negative KDs get Onyx. That’s what I meant when I said I know they will eventually fix that lol, in the meantime, us being in Diamond isn’t as bad as that negative KD person being in Onyx. He or she needs way to de-rank until this is fixed.

I also agree that this is one of the worst Halos for FFA and I also agree that this is because of map design. That’s why I asked for 2 maps to be removed and 3 good ones to be added.

I guess you didn’t check his rank in breakout, but it’s Diamond which i believe is much higher than yours. Break out requires your team to sit back and shoot people twice with a BR/DMR and 3 times with a magnum. I disagree with you 100 percent, it’s one of the worst competitive game types in my opinion. Sure it’s take a competent player to be good at Breakout, just like every other playlist, but it does not mean that this is the most skill based mode.

YES. Spawns in SWAT on Rig is awful. Same with Pegasus. I’ve gotten several triple kills by just killing someone and seeing them spawn directly in front of me more than once. Or you get the wonderful experience of being killed 3 steps out of your spawn. I’d almost rather die multiple times in a row without being able to move, then moving 3 steps and dying lol

Also removing radar wouldn’t change it at all, because i pre-grenade because of steps which i hear with me ears not because of the Radar. Or do you say, they should also remove Movement-Sounds to stop pregrenade. But i agree, radar-range should stay like it is now. Its perfect.

You can check my stats, I’m average at Breakout. But here’s why it’s not skill. Compared to other one death, round based games, the maps are WAAAAAYYY too small. There is no map movement or maneuvering at all. Each round and map plays out exactly the same each time. Trident, rush cloak, you either get a nade kill and win or get nade killed on the way up and lose. Wow, so much skill. Altitude is one of the worst map designs ever, nothing good about it. The other two maps are decent, crossfire being the best. But in that map, the team that camps better wins. In games where my team plays like giant pansies we get high KDs and win. In games where we push, we die. The combination of very little health and tiny maps leads to a no skill environment. Halo has always been about having shields and re-spawns. The gameplay should be a back and forth in which both teams must be able to attack and defend. Breakout removes the number 1 skill component of Halo (shields) and removes the requirement for a team to learn how to attack and defend. Watching Pros play this game type was awful, I hated every second and the better team wasn’t always the winning team, unlike CTF and Slayer. This playlist might be a skilled game type in any game except Halo! Halo is the game that proved FPS can be successful on the console because it went against every single FPS that used the same one life, low health modes!!! To now add in the exact game type that Halo revolutionized is anit-Halo in every way. It is however, fun to play in it’s own playlist. The only way this becomes a skill playlist is if grenades are completely removed and new maps are made that are twice the size of the current ones.

If you pre-nade because you hear footsteps, good for you, if you pre-nade because in the corner of your eye you saw movement in that direction, good for you! That is skill, using your eyes and ears and brain power!!! Looking at a radar because you don’t want to use your eyes, ears and brain to compensate for your laziness and lack of skill so you can turn and pre-nade is awful and should be removed.

Instant revives in swat need to go away, If I get an overkill in swat I should get a breather to be able to reload my gun and get into a better position. Not have the entire team spawn next to me right away

>
>
>
> - Reduce starting grenade count to 1.
If changes are needed due to bugs then please make the minimum changes needed to fix the bug, if you change this too much, the skill gap will greatly close due to how short time to kill is in this game.
> Additional Opinions based on other forum posts I’ve read:
>
> - If you listen to the ridiculous outcry to increase radar distance then every playlist must be changed to BR starts.
> - There needs to be at least some armor that is unlocked by actually doing stuff such as completing the campaign or playing lots of multiplayer matching. To leave everything up to chance is just a poor choice. I’m not one who cares that much about armor customization, but I am someone who likes to earn things, not pray to the RNG Gods. Heck, you would have been better off just charging people who the armor customizations that they want. Even that would be a better formula than what you have now.

Unfortunately all the Halo Pros that were used to help create the competitive settings/gameplay in Halo 5 all like Breakout and are in huge favor of it. They all call it the SnD (Search and Destroy: a playlist popular in COD) of Halo and that people who don’t like it just suck. Ive heard this str8 from both Pistola and Snipedown’s mouths on their twitch streams. They are the reason along with all the other pros 343 got feedback from as to why it’s AR/Pistol start in Halo 5. They are also the reason why the aiming mechanic was changed post beta because long range aiming felt too finicky for them.

What irks me is that most of these ex Halo pros had completely left the competitive halo scene for COD. Some of them had left before Halo 4! and have been playing cod competitively for years. This alone explains why they had so many issues with aiming mechanics post beta and wanted a larger weapon selection for competitive play. So yea, AR/Pistol start is unfortunately here to stay. I very much enjoy the pistol but the AR will always be overpowered trash in my opinion that takes no skill to use considering all you have to do is jump/crouch and spray in order to kill someone very quickly.

They are also responsible for the Ranking system in this game.

Essentially everything you want to change, the Halo pros were in favor of when working with 343 during the development process. This is why it’s in the game now.

I personally I am a fan of all your requests but I do enjoy playing breakout for what it is. However I don’t feel comfortable saying it should be removed from arena because I thought Team Doubles was a garbage playlist and felt it shouldn’t be ranked in Halo 3 because all you had to do in that game was grab a power weapon and shotgun and then camp.

Check out this forum topic too. It also is very constructive and touches on points regarding Warzone.

And thats the Problem. Most Halo Player aren’t used to it, so they falsely CLAIM it doesn’t require Skill They way you describe it, is like a NORMAL Slayer Mode would play, but not an Mode which is oriented on Counter Strike. People are to much used to the Halo Playstyle which is much faster than CS(and counter strike is still one of the most skillbased and competitive Game, out there, maybe even more than halo). Camping isn’t required, and Camping doesn’t mean that you automaticlly win. But you have to slow down your movement and act more tactic. And Nades also aren’t the Problem. If you play enough Breakout and know how the Map works, you can predict how most people throw the Grenades so you can evade this. And Pro’s are a bad argument, because Breakout Plays differently. Its a fresh/new mode only for Halo 5… like i said most Halo player aren’t used to that mode, so they play like they would a normal Team Slayer… But yeah i agree, Cloak is still a problem…me and my friends talked about that too. I don’t say that Breakout is perfect in his current State, it needs working and tweaking, but its still one of the most skillbased Gamemodes in Halo and deserve to be in HCS… Also the Maps are big enough…even if i wouldn’t mind to get also a bit bigger Maps in future. But twice as big. No - it would be like Counter Strike with Battlefield Maps…

But kay, i don’t care. I have better to do with my time as to discuss that out… we will see how it will work out in Halo 5.
