Activation Index

How was Cortana able to stop Installation 04 from activating and steal the index itself? The Index seems to be physical media but could it be composed of hardlight and therefore able to be stored within digital beings such as Cortana? How was she also able to activate Installation 04b, when usually a Human (Reclaimer) is needed for such a task?

Severing the Index from the controls stopped the firing on Delta Halo, I assume Cortana was able to prevent a connection period due to her being in the Halo’s control and simply made the physical Index into a digital one. However, it could be that the Index acts as just a medium that stores some codes or information that fires the rings, kinda like a highly-advanced USB.

I’d buy into that. Still doesn’t exactly explain how she was able to activate 04b though.

It’s pretty simple. When she was in the original core she was able to act like a firewall and block the code from executing. She retained a copy of the code from the Index and then used it after she was uploaded into the replacement ring’s control core.

What she took from 04a she used on 04b.

Only, this time she didn’t block it from running.

Didn’t chief have to press the console still after defeating spark? or am i miss remembering.

Even if not, she probably just hacked it. Forerunner stuff doesn’t seem to have that great of security.

I don’t know why I’ve always assumed activating a giant genocide machine required more than just a code. Also, humans are needed to activate the Rings, right? I mean, Johnson was needed to activate the Ark. Is that because it didn’t require an Index?

I can’t remember. I’d also think that Forerunner Installations would have excellent security but it seems as though you’re right.

I never saw a mention that said only humans could activate a halo installation using the index. There’s mention that Guilty Spark wasn’t allowed to do so himself, which was likely a security restriction, but my understanding is that the index was merely a key to a Forerunner weapon. The dual-state capabilities of the key was likely implemented for security/storage as well. You’ll note that Guilty Spark retracted the index into his own storage arrays in halo CE to keep it away from the flood.

Why would Tartarus drag Miranda to the Control Room and force her to insert the Index in Halo 2 if he could do it?

So a human is needed to activate the Ark, but anybody can fire a Halo. Seems like a serious design flaw.

To add on to what was already said. Why is a Reclaimer needed to retrieve the Index from its chamber. Spark may be able to take it away and put it back. But he can’t use it himself, and he needs a human to get it in the first place. We have ZERO evidence of other species being able to use Forerunner tech on an advanced level, The San Shyuum were only able to get the Keyship to function at a minimal fraction of its full output, and they had Huragok.
