Achilles Today

Achilles was arguably the most prestigious armor set in Halo 5. For good reason, it was a sign that you had grinded out and earned the armor. It was a status symbol.

However, now I see an Achilles helmet every two matches. The Achilles is now, in metaphorical terms, the mass produced product of Spartan Company factory lines. Its value in rarity, like Helioskrill, has sadly diminished greatly. It’s symbolism of skill, like Helioskrill, has languished.

Achilles, in my opinion, is like Shinobi now. A nice looking but over-the-top armor set that is a common sight on the battlefield. But what do you think? Does Achilles still have the value it once had?

Well, you know, 2-year-old+ game. A max of 100 people have an opportunity to get it per Spartan Company. By now, 2+ years into the game, lots and lots of people have completed the grind with their Companies. Were you expecting something different? Will you feel the same way if you start seeing lots of SR152’s running around?

No, not particularly. I knew this would happen. I’m just not understanding all the hype around the armor.

I honestly never liked the Achilles armor to begin with. It’s an okay looking armor, I can agree with that, but there are plenty of armors that look way better in my honest opinion. I also never liked the Achilles Armor, not because of the grind to get it, but the fact you had to rely on 99 others to grind as well to obtain it. Once I learned that you had be in a Spartan Company of 100 users all max grinding company commendations to get it, it became an instant turn-off for me.

I have been in gaming groups and “companies” before in the past and all it was was a bunch of drama and people who made you wear your armor a certain color and set up your emblem/profile a certain way…and even meet a recruitment quota in order to stay in the company. So, the whole idea of being in a group with so many others made me cringe. And seeing as most people in these groups now are only in it for the armor and could care less about the actual company after they get the armor, it’s like why even bother. Not everyone enjoys being in a big group.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am all for a good grind and getting something to show for it. And honestly, if you had to max out only your own personal commendations, then yes, I would find the Achilles Armor to be a little more enjoyable. But the fact is makes you have to grind with 99 others kills it for me. I have pretty much all the armors save for the Achilles, Timmy, Challenger, and like one other helmet (either through so many hours in custom games or by getting a map on a playlist…I don’t remember which…the one that isn’t Timmy) and the Achilles Armor isn’t worth it anymore. Not just because it’s become such a common armor, but because the fact you have to max grind with 99 others isn’t even worth it to start with.

Well, you answered that question in the first line of your opening post.

That’s the hype. Certainly, it might not mean anything to anyone not trying to get it, but for those Companies and people who put in the time and effort, I’d imagine it still represents quite a valuable achievement to them.

It’s no longer a status symbol though. It just means that you freeloaded till the rest of your company got it done or it just joins you with the rest of the Achilles bandwagon. There’s no value or prestige in it anymore.

Maybe you’re right. All I’m saying is that for those who did start the grind from the beginning and finished, and for those that made a worthwhile contribution to a company’s grind, having earned the armor probably still means something to them. I’m not concerned with the people who piggybacked off the hard work of others to get it.

Let’s not make the assumption that everyone who wears Achilles is doing so because they think it’s a prestigious status symbol or something. I wear the body armor sometimes, but I have no problem admitting I didn’t really earn it.

Anyway yeah, it’s only natural to see a higher proportion of players wearing it, as Halo 5’s population continues to drop and only the more dedicated players are staying behind.

I agree. It was much better when we could earn special armors and stuff on our own.

I don’t know man. Most Achilles users are above SR 100, which means that they most likely have much better looking armor sets. I doubt anyone wears Achilles in that case for anything other than these two reasons:

  • Showing off - Making the Helioskrill helmet work if you don’t have the Helioskrill body yet (me)

Or they actually think it looks nice. But like Nate said, Halo 5’s population has dropped since it came out and only the ones who really like the game stick around. And yeah, there are companies still working toward the set, but nothing like it was when the set was released.

For reference, LTN was told from a member of the 343 team that about 6000 people had the complete set as of late fall 2017 (I believe it was November but could be mistaken). That’s not a whole lot relatively speaking. Also, the only times I come across more than one or two people per match with the helmet is if people are in the same company.

For you, maybe, but there are far better helmets at the general rank of your average Achilles user, and the statistics are on my side. Here’s the helmet opinion survey:

Achilles wearers, for the most part, are in it for the perceived prestige, not the looks.

Was that participant pool all players or only ones that wanted to respond? If it’s the latter, then you already have an issue with the results. There are justifiable reasons for hating it, like how companies used to constantly farm and spawn trap players in Warzone. Otherwise, most of the people that complain about Achilles are salty about not having it and seem to want to lash out against players who do in order to make themselves feel better.

Besides, everything you said is entirely an opinion and there’s no harm in someone wearing it because they think it’s prestigious. I certainly wear it because it looks awesome and had to be earned. One way or another, it definitely is prestigious and special because not everyone has it and it has to be earned unlike literally every other helmet besides Olive. The fact that you even made this post shows that you still keep Achilles in its own category and think about it as separate from the other armor sets.

You are right that this survey is flawed. However, it is the closest thing you’ll get to an actual statistic on armor. Your proposal that looks are what’s making the Achilles so common is already very easy to take out using a simple Occam’s Razor, because I already have some form of foundation for my claim.

By the way, I’m not salty or lashing out. I have Achilles (body armor). I just choose not to wear it, because it’s very mediocre.

On the last note, there is no harm in boasting. I’m just stating my opinion that Achilles is pretty much worthless now. There would be some semblance of value if it was a solo grind kind of thing, but there is no prestige to be found in an armor which you needed at least 70 others to get. It’s just about how much time you pour into the game, Achilles requires no skill. Just time.

And about that last remark, you’re grasping. That argument is flimsy and unfounded.

Olive helmet, that was the one I was thinking of that I couldn’t remember. Thanks. Also, you have to earn the Timmy helmet as well…granted you may not have to do as much to obtain it (Play 50 hours of custom games, I think?) unlike Achilles and the Olive helmet, you still have to put in some work to obtain it.

My company and I have been working on it for over a year now. The armor and helmet itself is all well and good, but the journey so far is what is more important to me. The friends I’ve made, the countless hours of fun with large groups, the feeling of accomplishment, grinding for Achilles has facilitated that for me. I feel like it’s all a matter of perception, I’m happy just having the opportunity to bring people together for a common goal.

That’s the great part of it. Making friends along the way.

It has however much value you place on it. I worked hard for mine, so I am proud of it. To others it’s just another armor set that means nothing to them. Neither opinions are wrong

I did it, not for the prestige, but for the helmet, which as SPARTANS, we never had a helmet based on (or inspired by) historical Spartans before. I kinda needed it on that basis alone. The armor is kinda growing on me, although wrath/wrath anhur is still my favorite.

Personally for me, I really like the helmet. The armor… so, so. I guess I’m somewhat of a completionist. I like going after game achievements and commendations. The company I was in didn’t make game play miserable for others by farming or having to play dress up if you were a member.

Well, I one time made a Thread about the Achilles Armour, but yeah it’s no longer a symbol of completion anymore… just another Armour set to me
