Accidental Ban...

I got banned without quitting any games or betraying anyone, this happened to anyone else?

Has not happened to me but I am curious as to how the banning system works…how long is your ban for?

Your game history says you had 3 DNF games in your last ten.

Someone betrayed me because he wanted my sniper. When I respawned I betrayed him to get it back and then I get booted…

I’ve had some bans but they never said what for and they never seemed to actually be active and it stated the bans was till the year 2050

at 1st I was like this can’t be right but then tried to play a game and I could still play.

12?? I don’t think I’ve played that many in a day.

Considering all of the DNF’s I saw on your history, I think your ban was with reason. I got banned just for quitting 3 games. It doesn’t last forever, you should just wait it out. Go play some custo… , never mind.

Alllllright… They weren’t without good reason though.

This game needs more descriptive messages when a player is banned. Telling them why they were banned and how long.

I don’t think so. People just need to finish games and not betray their teammates. That way, nobody gets banned and no description is needed!

Also, can we stop with these threads? If you get banned, it isn’t hard to look at your game history and figure out that you quit a bunch of games and got banned for it… No need to clog the forums with a bunch of these when they are mostly the same (quitting multiple games for some reason).

Yes, more descriptive messages will actually cut down on the “I got banned for no reason” threads. What is really happening is, They’re getting banned for unknown or unexplained reasons and therefore, coming on the forums asking why. There’s no reason not to say why.

People need to know why they have been banned so they know what they have done. How are you meant to stop people from doing the wrong thing if they don’t know what it is they have done and in my cases and other people I wasn’t sure what it was I did. I assumed it was a glitch.

Yes there is. A rule to be enforceable needs to be discrete, what that means is that it’s not very effective to ban someone for camping when the rule for “camping” is “staying at one place without moving for 10 seconds”. This is not discrete and if such rule exists then the next best strategy for camping will be staying still for 9 seconds.

Unfortunately a game like Halo needs a lot of not discrete rules to maintain fairness while still banning perpetrators. The “justest” (is that a word?) rule for betrayals should be a zero betrayals tolerance but the nature of the game makes that very hash, so they make the rule something arbitrary like 3 betrayals, which is not discrete. If people know the rule is 3 betrayals then I can steal two sniper rifles by betraying and still be ok.

And before someone complain that this is not the case, those aren’t my words. There is actually this article (http://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/what-should-be-banned) that’s a part of an eBook about playing to win where a game developer (David Sirlin, for anyone that knows him) explains what should and shouldn’t be banned in a competitive game. Look into the chapter Criteria of a Ban - Discrete to see what I’m talking about.

So as much as I agree that it’s annoying having people complain that they shouldn’t be banned when they should, teaching people about the non discrete rules in place will make those rules useless. I assure you that even if those people keep complaining, if they are constantly kept from playing they will fix their entire behavior so that they can play again - that or they will never change and we don’t need to ever meet them again in game.

I get it. I thought it glitched because it banned me 10 minutes after the last dnf. I really didn’t mean to accumulate so many…

My team was crushing so I stepped away while they mopped up… Returned to see the ‘Wake up John’ screen. Then received a 2minute 17second ban :-\ dumb…

In my experience it’s pretty difficult to get banned by accident. Until I replaced my router last Friday, I was getting booted from games once every hour and a half on the dot, due to a bug in the router’s IP lease renewal. This resulted in me regularly losing connection to games, and I didn’t get banned once.
