Honestly, I really hate what their doing to the established lore. Chief’s back story has already thoroughly explained, and there is no way a 12 year old john could have existed (as a civilian). He was abducted at age six and replaced with a flash clone. This clone would have died within 1-3 months because they are born basically terminally ill so no way his flash clone would have lived another 6 years. Whatever BS explanation they have for a 12 year old john beating up trained boxers is lore breaking. Not until he becomes augmented does he gain the strength to take on people that should be stronger than a 12 year old. Also it was made perfectly clear in the lore, john never returns to the civilian population in any capacity. Everyone that ever knew him would think he is dead.
They also botched the childhood friend thing. Taking cues from that Halo 3 commercial of John remembering a moment from his childhood, when he was looking at the stars with that girl.
And finally this is more so about the new trailers, why all of the sudden is master chief famous (giant Chief statue)? He has always been an unknown soldier, an unknown hero. All spartans are. That’s part of the reason they stripped spartan 2’s and 3’s of their identity. Sure people knew about spartans but not individual ones. Hell, remember in Halo 3 at the end? Not a single picture of master chief, jsut his number carved in the metal. Chief never had a legacy, he was an unknown hero who does what needs to be done. Only the people who fought closely with him and his commanding officers knew who he was.
I personally felt it was better that way, and far more badass of chief being an unknown hero.

You do realize that the interviewees are intentionally giving false info to cover up the Spartan project and the kidnappings? ONI set up the interviews meaning that it is very likely these people Giraud talks to aren’t really witnesses. More like actors in a rigged story.

The discrepancy is the whole point of the series. ONI has planted seeds in the media and those that Benjamin would interview for this story, covering up the true Spartan program and crafting the perfict heroic origin story. The accounts of seeing John at 12 are most likely false, a coverup. ONI wasn’t counting on Benjamin finding John’s death report, which is why he hunts the truth and will probably come across the true nature of the Spartan program and clones and such.
What did they botch? Taking cues from that trailer and Chief’s childhood friends doesn’t do anything negative at all. Ellie is probably the only truthful interview Benjamin has so far.
All of a sudden? Chief is an icon of the end of the war. The Spartans were revealed to the public late in the war for a moral boost, and star soldiers like the Chief would have been heavily capitalized on. People knew the Chief. Whenever someone mentions the Spartana, the Chief is the one they think of. Some even believe that he was the only Spartan. And ONI released even more information about the program in the years after the war.

He was not an icon after the war, all that was left was a carving of his tag in the memorial. Only those that knew him personally knew who he was.

People tend to selective memories. I don’t know why even bother with these forums. I only come here to read on theorist’s posts, but since there are soo many negative posters a guy can’t really evade them all like Neo in Matrix.

Perhaps not after the Covenant war but possibly after the Didacts attack. We know that the Spartans were made public to help with morale. In Escalation when the Master Chief was being debriefed, the upper echelon are talking about how to spin it to the public:
“We’ll play it off as a Covenant attack, an attack that the UNSC fended off via the perfectly timed return of her greatest hero”
It’s not a stretch to think that someone would have commissioned a statue of the Chief as a result; heck ONI/UNSC may have done so. As part of that and the clamuor for info, the ONI decided to release some information on him like his name, but hide how he really became a Spartan by spinning a great “hero rising from tragedy” origin story. Nothing in the log has broken any lore/canon and certainly won’t have when it’s all put together.

Your view is completely inaccurate with how chief is portrayed in the games. Can you not remember all the bits in the games, patricularly I am thinking in Crow’s Nest in Halo 3, when marines freak out… wow a spartan! Master Chief! Chief is a legend in the halo universe by the end of the trilogy.
Seriously? Another thread about how theses stories can’t be true and are retconing all the old lore? That isn’t the case. Do any of you actually read anything else on the forum before making posts?
