For some reason, that i can’t even begin to understand, 343 is (almost?) the only developer in the world who thinks that letting people from outside the USA play with 120+ ms ping is ok.
But people are smarter than they think, they started to use geo filtering routers and modifying files in windows to play fair matches with low ping in their respective regions.
After removing the server selection option that was present in MCC, now 343 wants to take away the option to geo filter because they say that american players are tired of getting put into matches with high ping.
And it’s true, because even 1 guy who is geo filtering is forcing the entire lobby to play on his favourite server…
The solution: DON’T put people from different CONTINENTS in the same damn match IN THE FIRST PLACE!
This is caused by the infamous skill based matchmaking system: you want people to play against other people at their skill level… with a 120+ms ping disadvantage?? I don’t get it…
AT LEAST give us a server selection option PLEASE!
I guarantee that if you take out this “exploit”, the game outside the usa will die very quickly.
Is that what you want 343?
Is this an actual quote? I haven’t heard anyone say this.
If 343 does want to get rid of geofiltering it is more likely that it is because it messes with the stability of their matchmaking.
Also, I totally agree that they definitely should allow region filtering within the game itself just like they already do in MCC. Getting put on servers outside your area is bad for everyone.
They didn’t say this directly, but you should know that if there are 4 eu players in and 4 usa players in a lobby, the game will almost always choose an american server, i tested this in halo 5 many times, it’s not an absolute proof 100% of the time but my personal experience doesn’t lie
For that reason, almost everytime an american player plays on foreign servers, it’s because someone in the lobby is geofiltering, forcing everyone to play on his selected servers
This is why i said the words above…
So, to clarify, american players are the ones more penalized by this geofiltering exploit, because they are used to play on their servers all the time so they have no reason to use the geofilter themselves

My guess is the U.S. just has tons more servers available than other regions. So if there are lobbies with mixed regions, they more likely end up in a U.S. server than somewhere else.
But of course, the less people have to play in other regions, the better… especially in ranked matches. At least until they get their net code fixed. At this point, even games with low ping can be unplayable due to the net code issues.
In all likelihood there is no fixed number of servers. They run this in Azure and what you typically do in the Cloud is add/remove servers on demand. You don’t pay for servers that are not running at the moment as they can be used by other customers. It’s more likely that this happens due to more players being from the US than any other region.
Fixing the Netcode won’t help. If one player has < 30 ms and another > 100 ms the difference is just too big. The players with low ping will always have the advantage in games that in any way give a benefit to reaction time (which all Shooters do).

Maybe. I just know I have played in games with 30 ping that felt worse (getting shot behind walls, melee not registering, etc.) than other games I have played at 80 ping. I agree that once it gets to 100 ping, it’s all bad.
I perhaps should have been clearer: the netcode definitely does need improvement (for all the reasons you mentioned). I just don’t think it will solve the issues people face with being put into lobbies across regions.
