About the armor of certain characters

In many different pieces of the fiction, we’ve seen the characters wear different types of armor. However, I’m talking about the canonical status of armor worn. In the animated series, they’re wearing Mark IV like this, and John looking like this. Another variant John wears is this, Kelly in this one, and Fred in FUD. In Fall of Reach comic, they look like this. This is the most common look for Mark IV, and is even done on the cover for TFOR worn by John, Kelly, and Sam. This may just be me, but I’m wondering what is is their canonical armor. The armor they wear in FUD is obviously canon, but in terms of the books, comics, and the animated miniseries, which look is the official look? In FUD, John, Kelly, and Fred might’ve been testing prototypes for armor used later (except for the one John wore). Maybe they wore different armors at those times, but had their primary armor. What do you think?

Spartans definitely did not have to stick with one armor type or variant, in fact it stands to reason that wearing different variants at different times would actually be the rule rather than the exception.

Thanks for the answer Grim, you’re the best man!

I personally hate all the variant crap, the original idea was to have one super suit good at everything that you just upgraded when you had a break through. All the Spartans ‘looked the same’ and unless you knew them (attitudes, height differences etc. like Halsey) they seemed the same; and that added to the mystery of a Spartan and helped with the ‘Spartans never die’ mythos. Now there are a bagillion different armour types in stupid non-military colours and with name tags/numbers emblazoned on them.

That’s the march of progress for you.

Exactly. Now that the UNSC knows how to make Mjolnir armor more efficiently, they can make more specific variants.
Spartans are slowly becoming standard infantry.
Just think: The Spartan V program could replace standard marines entirely.

That was Halsey’s vision I think. The spartans probably are genetically similar to the ancient humans which I think is the Librarian’s goal. Soon all humans will be augmented.

It feels regressive to me. What’s better (talking in terms of story feel and in-Haloverse): one suit that does everything to the highest degree (E.V.A, E.O.D, C.Q.B and so on) and just gets upgraded from time to time; or the myriad sets we have now, all doing different things to varying degrees according to their descriptions. You shouldn’t have to tailor your Mjolnir to the situation, the Mjolnir she be optimal for all situations.
The armour feels very throwaway nowadays. Seems really redundant to have so many variations.

While there may be a bit too many variations these days, the variety makes sense far more than some silly supersuit that somehow masters everything.

The spartans themselves were not uniform in ability, why should their armor feel like mass produced rubbish vs suits tailored to suit their role to maximum effectiveness?

Considering How The S4s operate its possible

Surely that is the goal though? To master the formula and have one cost effective suit capable of excelling in every field, instead of 500 different suits tailored for niche things. Why the hell do you need an underwater suit and a tracking suit and a boarding action suit? Seems really inefficient, costly and time consuming. There should only be generational leaps as better tech comes along, as it was. Hell Gen2 is a load of crap when you consider Mk.VII, which falls in line with the original idea. one amazing suit good at everything. Seems really, really stupid every soldier having a variant, the military still likes some standardisation doesn’t it?

The variations were better when it was purely fans putting their individual flair on their in-game avatar.

Thats the req system for you lol. Canonically, we wouldn’t have this many different variants of armor if it didn’t help 343 make money.
