I think it would help with micro on many situations if pressing Y on gamepad while having multiple units (with abilities) selected would only activate the ability of the unit that is closest to the cursor and has an ability available (not in cooldown). Ideally the icon for the ability to be activated would constantly be shown next to the cursor circle.
For example, say you have bunch of grunts and engineers selected. You want to place a mine, just press Y near a grunt and the unit would place a mine. Or if you want to activate one engineer shield, just move cursor on top of the engineer and press Y. You almost never want all of the units to activate their abilities with one press. And if you want for example all of your 10 selected marines to throw a grenade, hitting Y 10 times isn’t that difficult. Or maybe double or tripple tapping Y could actually activate all the abilities of all the selected units.
I probably wouldn’t mind similar behavior on kb+mouse as well, but it’s much much easier to select individual units and just activate the abilities you want than on a gamepad.
right now if you have 20 marine squads and press y on a base all 20 throw grenades and this is not the issue, the issue is when you press y on lets say a snipers, all 20 throw grenades at the single sniper when all marines are selected. this game simply doesn’t present a well enough designed control system to deselect and reselect individual units. i am speaking from a Xbox controller experience for usability friendly experiences.
i want them to change it so if you press y on a unit, the amount of marines that throw grenades is equal to the amount needed to kill that unit based on there health. that way you can press y switch target press y and get the full value of squads. the current system is awful because early game is controlled by jackrabbit or scout vehicles, right now you cant contend with units that are not suppose to be used as a army and it really should not be this way. honestly not having a smart system to utilize y abilities is awful and needs to be addressed.
Most units will be switched to monocasting in the upcoming patch (meaning 1 press of Y = 1 special ability). There will still be exceptions though I believe.
Notably, marines are currently multicast and are confirmed to be switched to monocast after the patch. I think (98.76% sure) that engineers will also be switched.

That would lower an already very low skill ceiling.
The player should still have to micro the abilities… that’s part of what separates the good players from the bad.

So you are saying that if you want to kill an anti-infantry turret with marines you would prefer selecting each one and pressing Y individually as opposed to selecting all of them and just pressing Y? Wtf? You wouldn’t have any units left by the time you were done XD

after reading the 3rd comment i completely null everything i just wrote. thank god there changing it.
i was simply suggesting a change that better than the current system but seems like 343 is adding one even better thank god

Oh well that’s already awesome, but I would still appreciate the control my approach would bring. What if you have two types of monocasting units selected?

You can still select a group. You just have to press Y for every marine that you want to throw a grenade. This makes microing a ton easier, and ensures no damage goes to waste.
This has huge implications across the board. When you combine the switch to monocasting with a couple of other things in the upcoming patch (such as grenades no longer targeting the floor, support drone responsiveness, jackrabbit cost, removal of jackrabbit splash damage), it is easy to imagine that the meta will switch to a heavy infantry opening. When a -Yoink- ton of jackrabbits come, all you’d have to do is select all of your marines, press Y twice one each jackrabbit and you should win the battle. Grenades will only miss if the opponent switches direction just as your marine throws the grenade which obviously requires good micro-management, and you will see a lot of the lower-level players no longer using jackrabbits.

No, you have all of them selected and just press Y n-times, where each press would throw one grenade. Or optionally double or tripple tap on Y could act like the singe Y tap now and throw all of the grenades. What I’m suggesting is exactly to get rid of the need to select individual units when you only want to activate a single ability.

So wait. Back up. Are you saying that if I select a group of 10 marines and press Y on a turret they will still all throw simultaneously (as it should be) or what else will it be like. This is rather confusing to decipher.
And/or when you select the 10 marines from earlier and press Y on a rabbit only one of them throws?
Also is there a new control feature that utilizes two rapid Y presses? I haven’t heard of that before.

The units with the highest priority in the selection (press “RT” to switch selected unit type within a group - otherwise if no individual unit is selected, I believe, anecdotally, the unit furthest to the left in the UI)

So let me get this streight. If you select five marines and you press Y three times on a target they throw three grenades?
And how fast are the concecutive throws? I remember sentinels Y took ages with selecting all of them and pressing Y multiple times… As in you select like 10 and press Y ten times either only a few would fire or it would take until one re-charges its ability for all of them to finally fire…

No. If you select a group of 10 marines and press Y once, one group will throw their marines. If you press Y 6 times, 6 groups (the ones closest to the target) will throw their grenades.
This is called monocasting. The alternative is multicasting (which is what we see with marines now, where pressing Y once with 10 groups selected will throw 10 grenades).
In regards to 2 grenades, I just mean that’s how much it takes to kill a jackrabbit. So the person would select all their marines and press Y twice on each jackrabbit. Instead of the current method whereby you’d have to select 2 marines individually, press Y, cancel selection, rinse & repeat. Which is one of the reasons why jackrabbit rush is very hard to hold with marines currently.
