On ArtStation, Gabriel Garza, posted an abandoned piece of concept art of for the Didact here. This certainly is an interesting, however I’m not a big fan of it myself. I don’t see the point of the Didact wearing the cloak, yeah it looks cool, but it serves no purpose. Also half his body is missing, and he has a mechanical leg, and then has half a floating mechanical arm. And then also why does he have a cane, just seems odd. It’d look cool for maybe something else, it’s a very good piece, I just feel like it doesn’t really work for Halo, what’d you think of this piece?
As it is, or rather, was, concept art, the things we’d never be able to know is why he looks the way he does. It would be up to the games or whatever form of media he shows up in to explain his appearance. But it’s abandoned artwork, so it’s nothing more than an artist putting pen to paper and letting the creative juices flow. Personally, though, I like it.

That’s cool. But man, I really hope we see him return in the games at some point…
Not a fan either. The Didact we have in H4 looks the part 100%. The concept looks cool on first sight, but like you said, none of it makes much sense when you look at it for a couple of seconds.
He was a good enemy. I would have loved it had he not been canonically alive at the end of H4 and then killed off in a comic. It reduced the impact of your actions in H4 and made the story not as exciting.

For sure, it just looks… off. Thankfully he’s not really dead, just composed. Which means maybe he’ll return in a later game.

As cool as that might be, I think it would be unwise to have him make a return. Most players believe they killed off the Didact at the end of H4. Hell, I forgot he was composed and not dead! Bringing him back would cause a lot of confusion for most players I think.

For sure, it’d be tough. However I think if they did it right without confusing people, it could work.

It can explain the looks. His body was damaged by both the Composer and various battles, and it is mechanical ONLY. It doesn’t have any biological parts, so it makes sense, he was composed after all.

What’s interesting is that I think maybe this piece was done before Brian Reed decided to remove him from the game and have him composed in Escalation. So then they would’ve had it where he was damaged after falling through the slipspace portal. I also think maybe this was drawn when Chris Schlerf was still with the team.
