Pre-order bonuses don’t really do anything, unless it’s a weapon or something. Other than that, I couldn’t care less about what the pre-order bonus is.
Pre order bonuses are fine. Pre orders help stores and publishers gauge demand. Multiple, unique store specific pre order bonuses, like Fallout New Vegas, is where I draw the line.
> Is it me, or are in-game bonuses a REALLY cheap way of racking up preorders? Gaming companies have the content available from day 1, it took almost no effort to make, and they’re going to hold it back from people who didn’t preorder? That’s just wrong. Everyone who pays for the game, at any point in time, should get the same in-game experience as everyone else. Companies never tried to pull this Yoink! 10 years ago.

> Now, I’m fine with giving people preorder bonuses. There’s nothing wrong with that, and without them there would be no incentive to preorder. These bonuses however, should be something along the lines of what Halo 3 gave us. Art books, posters, stuff that we can actually hold in our hands.
>
> 343, if you guys make a good game and hype it up, I’ll preorder it. There’s no need to threaten us with, “If you don’t preorder, you’ll never experience the Grunt Funeral skull!” Like I said, take the Halo 3 route again.
Welcome to business 101. In this course you will learn fundamental strategies to building a good company…
I don’t see the problem with pre-order bonuses, and I don’t see them disappearing any time soon.
id just like to say preorders are not based off the game companies. there based off the store i been told this by other developers. that the stores will ask the company to send them a code for something tht will unlock in a game. like someone said its for demand like gamestop they want u to come to there store to purchase there product not have u purchase from there oppenent. they usually have the best preorders thats why they make the most preorders.
> Companies never tried to pull this Yoink! 10 years ago.
- Ten years ago there was no Xbox live so preorder bonuses would make no sense as there would have been no way to get them
- It’s called marketing
Why wouldn’t you be preordering Halo 4 ? >:(
TBH I never really cared about the grunt funeral skull. I never would have used it anyway.
a
Totally agree, there’s a game store near where I live that gives you a free t-shirt with your pre-orders. I got a Battlefield 3 one and will be getting an Operation Racoon City one soon.
Fingers crossed for a Halo 4 one! Having something that’s actually there is far more convincing to me than in game bonuses. Books, posters, T-shirts are all just plain awesome to have, and if they die off I will be very sad.
Just my two cents.
I agree with this. It’s a marketing stunt and gaming trend, and I’m getting sick of seeing it. Video games should be about quality and fun, not making as much money as possible. If the content exists at the time of release, it should be on the disk. Simple as that. We’re paying over half of a hundred dollars for a game, we should get everything it has to offer without limited content to people who pre-ordered the game.
> I agree with this. It’s a marketing stunt and gaming trend, and I’m getting sick of seeing it. Video games should be about quality and fun, not making as much money as possible.
I don’t understand how making a random set of armor or weapons negates the story at all. It is just another plus for the people that pre-ordered the game. I also think that people forget that Gaming is a business.
I’m going to echo coldFUSI0N’s sentiments here. A general, non-retailer specific pre-order bonus is fine by me, and he’s absolutely right that retailers use pre-orders to gauge interest in a title.
I don’t really see an issue, since it incentivizes people to purchase the game on day one. Think about it: are you going to buy Halo within the first week? Yes? Then pay for a small part of it early and get free stuff. No? then your decision to wait to buy the game means you lose out on the free stuff. If you’re buying the game anyway, what difference does it make? The only people that preorder bonuses punish are the indecisive.
> I agree with this. It’s a marketing stunt and gaming trend, and I’m getting sick of seeing it. Video games should be about quality and fun, not making as much money as possible.
A lot of people seem to think making money and making fun are mutually exclusive… they are not. Everybody wants to make money. Lots of people want to make fun games. Why can’t we do both? Name me a game that’s made a lot of money that’s just not fun.
Yes i want a physical pre order the premium skyrim map was awesome

Getting charged for unnecessary things is not fun. Are online passes, another modern gaming trend, fun? Getting a piece of content that wasn’t put on the disk at the point of release just for the sake of making a little more money isn’t fair. Purposely taking out content just to sell it back to us day one isn’t fair, and that’s the point I’m getting at.
Yeah, Dead Space 2 was fun as hell, but if you rent of buy the game used you have to pay for an online pass to play the multiplayer. The games fun, but it’s not fair. Devs should be more focused on making fun content and providing as much as possible for your money, not making as much money as possible.

Majority of the things you brought up bungie hasn’t done so they are irrelevant. I don’t remember Paying for an online pass for Dead Space 2 since it comes with a new game. Companies are doing that because Gamestop makes more money off used games than new ones so they mark up new prices so you buy used games.
And At the End of the day the Devs and others are going to be riding home in a car they paid with in money not your happiness. So while it would be nice if the world was filled with Unicorns and Rainbows it isn’t, so it is pointless wishing that it was.

I never stated that Bungie did it, although Reach did have the pre-order exclusive chest piece. Yes, these games come with passes when you buy them new, but is it right for companies to literally kill the used game industry so they can pocket some extra cash? You’re not quite understanding the point of this whole thing. The developer is taking content out of the game, to sell it back to you later to make a little more money. It’s deceitful. Gaming used to be about the customer, not pumping out a new title every year to make money.

LOL, got to love Business 101.
Also, 10 years ago, part of the reason no one did it, wasn’t because people didn’t want to, but because business didn’t realize how much of a cash cow it was.
Do I want to have some preorder bonus, yes, as long as they treat it like what they guys who made Deus EX: HR did, you have the preorder bonuses for places, and then later on down the road after it’s release, make the preorder bonuses become DLC that people can download for a little extra. It’s not a cheat shot, because it’s not like no one else will be able to unlock that stuff later on. Also if I remember right, when Crysis 2 came out, one of the preorder bonuses was 5 level head’s start on MP ranks. In Game Preorders are nice, as long as they’re useful, and later on others can download them.
Getting stuff like art books, posters, and stuff, yes they’re nice, but if you’re not into that kind of stuff, it ends up being lost, or collecting dust some where.

Wow a single Chestpiece that wasn’t even that good, that’s worth blogging about.
from what you are stating i have a far better understanding of it than you do. I know they are doing it to stop companies like Gamestop from making such profits. For Instance, The Game companies actually sell their games for 50 bucks but the places you buy them from rack up the price to 60. That is why computer games are cheaper since you are buying them direct and not from a store.
And it isn’t like Majority of the DLC we get isn’t canceled material from the Creating process majority of the time. I understand why Capcom is doing such and other companies and it isn’t too big of a deal. Buy your games new and you won’t have an issue. Remember that you can still wait a few months for the price to drop and still buy it new with it having everything. IF not buy it online directly from the company.

Where are you preordering that charges you EXTRA? the end cost is the same to you, and giving a small percentage of the cost of the game in advance only benefits you. Not to mention you can always choose to have that money returned to you. It’s a deposit.
Online passes are a WHOLE different can of worms, and not what this thread is about. Preorder bonus =/= Online pass. You still get an online pass when you buy a game a year after it comes out. Online passes are rewards for buying the game new, NOT rewards for buying the game early.
Also, incentivizing with new content and incentivizing with removed content are two completely different things. Who’s to say that if they choose to have a weapon skin as a preorder bonus that that gun was always in the game? We don’t know, and i’m not sure it’s fair, or reasonable for us to assume we’re getting ripped off.
Again. we’re not talking about online passes. We’re talking about pre-order bonuses. They are not the same thing.
