A whole new level of combat- Underwater

So, I was just thinking- throughout the course of Halo, we’ve learnt to master the ground and air. But one thing we’ve barely even touched is the Water- the great, blue sea. Perfect for Killing!

Imagine- playing on the water with super fast speedboats and jets, and going under the depths, in, well, a cool submarine or something- you name it! I think this will bring a whole new level of fun to the game, and will be a great new twist.

It’ll be cool to have some sort of campaign mission too, where you dive to the depths to retrieve an artifact of sorts and along the way, encounter a huge undiscovered monster in a duel to the death. Nice, huh?

Also, it’ll be cool to have, for example, a gametype in team action sack called Pirate raid or something- where on side has a large boat and must defend the other side from invading and taking over it (One life per person only!), who are either attacking on another ship or from underwater.

Theses ideas will likely not be added in the game, but I thought I’d share it anyway.

So, whadd’ya think?

I don’t know about the speedboats and monsters thing, but underwater is an environment worth considering from a game perspective. There were levels in Halo 3 and Reach where you could enter the water without dying, and there’s no reason to believe MJOLNIR won’t work underwater, although swimming would be out of the question. Both projectile and directed energy weapons would behave differently under water.

The only other environment that we have not had a chance to play in is zero gravity. I’ve been waiting for that one for years.

Zero gravity sounds cool, but I don’t quite know how it’ll work.

Actually Halo 1/2/3 were great for water since we could explore them but Bungie/343i were the one’s to remove it in Reach/h4 since they were trying to add pointless restrictions everywhere that effected the game-play (banshee air-space kept getting smaller), limited the exploration due to the annoying boundaries.

Hopefully 343i understand that fans like myself like exploring, it be a good excuse to bring back the good old tricks like using the super jump trick to try to get hidden skulls or driving a warthog under water which was fun in Halo 1 or jumping into the River in Halo 3 or getting a banshee into the final boss’s area because it was ‘fun’ or glitching in Halo 2 to get the Scarab gun.

I want a flood whale.

> I want a flood whale.

That would be crazy, I want this idea. Could be similar to the mission in Gears of War 2 where Delta squad have to ride a barge over a body of water that holds a Leviathan or the Lambent Leviathan that attacks the ship on the first mission.

I kind of imaging it would play like it does in the first Crysis game.
You can free-look and move in any direction, just by pointing there. If you’re “upsidedown” relative to the floor of the map, you will slowly self-right to “down”. Weapons have very minor recoil that will push you backwards.

I think the level is “Core”

It was certainly excessive in Reach.

Yea, but that exploring part was really not part of they game- fun, though it certainly is- I think we should actually have vehicles designed for water combat and for the environment to not just a be a little funny glitch. There’s so many possibilities for water.

Pirate raid sounds like an awesome concept! It is in the same vein as Invasion and Dominion - creative use of the standard Halo gametypes like koth, ctf, or oddball and a generous helping of slayer.

The high seas theme is neat but I’d rather go three dimensional and move it to space. Staying with this theme but moving it into orbit… I’d love to see a remake of CE’s Boarding Action. It could be a great starting point for a pirate raid game type… be it in space or

I’m pretty sure there is a game mode that is basically what you’ve just said there on reach, can’t remember what it’s called but I think The Halo Forge Epidemic made it (I could be wrong)

It could work if the execution is well done. I’d envisage a tunnel type system and doors/rooms that require one door closing and one door opening as part of the map(s) design. You could have enclosed tunnels, some open water areas (walking only, no swimming in MJOLNIR) and the vehicles could only affect the players in the open water bits not the tunnels.

If the map design was executed well sure it work and provide a really nice change of design while showing off some of the new graphics power too. You could also have maps with islands and underwater bases which are connected in limited ways or have interactive elements like the open/close rooms to gain access e.g high ground gate but underwater for other access points.

Again the vehicles would be restricted to on the water surface or submerged and the Spartans would be limited by water movement and only walking slowly in water. A new underwater weapon could be introduced as well. You could also bring back the falcon and have a drop-bomb/depth charge firing mode to take out water vehicles on the surface or submerged.

Some interesting things to play with and I’d welcome a map or two like this for a change up of scenery and gameplay. It would have to be very well designed with gameplay in mind though. The water technology, weapons, vehicles, models and textures could be reused in campaign/coop too.

We have EVA and Oceanic armor taunting us with the ability to fight in zero-g and underwater. I want to see both.

It would have fish that move out of your way. Haha.
Would have very interesting custom games…like the underwater glitch map in Forge Island. Would be col if you see Flood Infected or Forerunner Machines moving about in it…probably won’t happen though.

The FPS dynamics would be changed because the head on profile of a player swimming would be very small.

You would have to angle to the enemies sides to get a larger profile to aim at.

What about the forge possibilities? We can already do some stuff on water, butil it’d be cool if we had more options.
