A TrueSkill Matchmaking System with no reward

Okay so ive played a solid 300 games, on and off on Halo 4 since release, now, and overall with the Multiplayer I’m pretty satisfied. The maps could cater a little LESS to the Vehicular manslaughter types of Players but, Im hoping the DLC AFTER CRIMSON PACK -.- will help with this issue.

My only qualms so far feel trivial and the qualms others apparently have do also. Although there is one issue Im starting to progressively dislike more and more.

My issue with the Halo Matchmaking System, isnt the ‘Drop In’ integration, nor the apparent Button Combo glitches that have surfaced (which I think are brilliant as a way of allowing the skilled players to excel). No, my issue is with the Matchmaking System and how it puts games together based on Trueskill.

As 343i have already revealed, the Trueskill system is in place already despite the fact that the Ranking System is not, and for me, this is really starting to damage my experience with the game.

I recall launch day being in the same boat as everyone, learning new things, maps etc… but I was still able to be incredibly successful from Day 1, above others, no doubt because of my decade of FPS Experience. Dont get me wrong though! I like how the game matches you against players of your similar skill, my concerns are:

~ Why is this system even in place PRE-ranking system?
~ Why am I continually being placed into games against FULL teams while I have randoms with no Microphones? Why is there no rule to say a Team of 3/4 cannot find a game unless there is another To3/4?

Its almost like, the more successful I am in my games, the harder it gets for me on a Solo level, as more and more teams are allowed to come and dismantle my side of the Match due to a lack of Comms and apparent lack of skill from many of my teammates (map positioning, tactics NOT WEAPON ABILITY AS BY COMPARISON THIS IS PALES IN IMPORTANCE).

I hate how there is no REWARD to ‘tryhard’ in games. Its like, in almost every playlist now ASSUMING we have seperate TrueSkills for every playlist, I cannot find a mere ‘social’ game. Its disheartening, as my actual teammates who i play with regularly and have good chemistry with are often very busy with Uni work (as am I) at different times to me, so Im forced to play the game I love and am good at, alone against a Team of 3/4, in an environment where teamwork is EVERYTHING. This isnt COD where you can carry a team to victory, ESPECIALLY, in objective modes, so why on earth is there a system to force you into games of your skill when there is absolutely NO REWARD for it. ITS POINTLESS, and just causes frustration and a general dislike for matchmaking. The only time I enjoy it now, is if I play with a couple of friends I know who are nowhere near my own TrueSkill and so the system has to find a balance of them both for matchmaking. Its horrible and I really would like this to be changed. I recognise that in a competitive mode such as ‘PRO’ slayer, this mechanic should never NOT be integrated and I support this idea, but for public social matchmaking in playlists that ALL vanilla players opt for, a Trueskill system should not be dictating matchmade teammates and opponents based on Trueskill without providing both an incentive and a reward!
You could say, ‘‘Oh but the reward is EXP!’’. No. The reward in EVERY playlist is EXP, and EXP isnt a reward after SR30, as most players will have already obtained their choice of Primary and Package.

Its really starting to bother me, because I really enjoy this game, and when I can play competitively, because I have my teammates who I know are good at the game and we have chemistry, we stomp on players of my own skill level, but even this gets old very quickly due to the lack of reward.

I really feel like this mechanic needs to be removed from vanilla playlists and should only exist in the competitive hoppers. Sometimes when I cant find decent friends to play with, I just want to be able to jump into any game with any skill level of players and have fun. I dont want to have to sweating it out, every single game, when there is no reward.

A real rank system is supposed to be released at the start of the year. Then we’re supposed to be matching up with similar skilled players…and possible have a different rank listed to our name alongside with the SR rank. Till then it’s obvious that if you search alone you’re gonna be screwed. The majority of players in this game just play for fun and not to win. They’re casual gamers. Slayer Pro is the funnest for me yet it’s one of the smallest played playlists. Just how the game is…which is why you gotta get your head out of matchmaking and play customs with other skilled people.

My only issue is the stupid EXP cap. I get it, but I hate it. Loved how CoD didn’t hold you back. No one cared about the boosters cause they sucked anyways. CoD didn’t let the dumb actions of others tie down the rest of the community. That’s where 343 is going wrong right now. Hope they fix it.

Yeah I know we are getting one, and personally I cant wait for it!

My point is, right now, with matchmaking in its vanilla state, there shouldnt be a mechanic to push you into games with players of similar skill outside of the playlists that are deemed competitive. If we use REACH as an example: MLG, TU Zero Bloom, Arena Modes are ALL competitive playlists. All the others, multi-team / BTB are social and for in that case, the mechanic to push you into games of your skill should only have applied in the Competitive Modes, the other 3 you should be able to hop into it, when your own team isnt online and still be able to just chill and enjoy yourself without having to SWEAT IT OUT. You could in REACH and thats why I enjoyed REACH, but right now as Halo 4 has NO REWARD (ranking system we dont have yet) there is no motivation to TryHard in every game like the Matchmaking System is forcing us to do.

A persons IRL social restrictions and friend availability due to important aspects such as a JOB, or Uni work, should not inhibit them from just jumping into a game and enjoying themselves without feeling forced to have to ‘try-hard’ against a Team of 3/4 with Randoms on your own, who havent plugged in their mic. Its not fun, its disheartening, and all the more infuriating when I know by the predictability of some times that if I had decent communications on my team, we could win, but instead, everyone decides to walk in their own direction, regardless of the objective of the game, probably for the a power weapon, and have no real grasp of map positioning/ movement and tactics.

Punishing people with responsibilities IRL, just to satisfy the needs of those with more extra time than most who want to be put against players of their skill because their team is available 24/7, takes the piss. And frankly, is quite damaging to the desire to play the game.

And I love this game. This is why it hurts so much.
I want that motivation to tryhard (rank) or just remove the mechanic altogether from the more social playlists until the Ranking System has been implemented.

BUMP. Please take notice of the Casual players 343.

I do hope when CSR rolls around they make the ‘social’ playlists a bit more lax at least. That way everyone wins. We can have Ranked and Social playlists again in halo.

Yeah, this is the message I’m attempting to portray, thanks for making it alot clearer man, I realise in retrospect, my explanation looks slightly ‘ranty’.

Your version sums up my feelings completely, I’d much rather be able to play in social playlists against and with anyone, without being restricted to requiring a good Team just to play at your TrueSkill so that when my team IS available I can hop into the Ranked Lists and enjoy it there too.

Atm, this mesh of ranked matchmaking making people victims of their own success by putting them against teams of 3/4 with randoms squad mates is getting so disheartening.

All I got from your really long post is that your mad because your not pwning people that are lesser skilled. The only reason why good players want “relaxed” matches is to make themselves feel better at other peoples expense.

So you completely missed the part about enjoying playing at my skill level so long as I have my team to do it with in TEAM based gamemodes?

Or did you opt to completely ignore that part like the shortsighted clown that you are?

This isnt Call of Duty, its not possible to win and go positive against Decent Teams when you are ALONE, so being good at the game and reaching a high Trueskill becomes a punishment when you cannot play WITH people of your skill, or find randoms with mics. Its not possible to outshoot 2 players who have the drop on you with the first Shot like it is in COD. Teamwork is literally the foundation of ANY success in this game, thus my point is, THERE SHOULD NOT BE a Matchmaking System based ENTIRELY on your TrueSkill, hoppers should be seperated JUST like in Halo 3, to provide proving grounds for when you can play in them: aka have decent team mates who you know have mics, and for when you dont have the benefit and luxury of decent teammates the social grounds are there for you to enjoy halo at its core without needing to sweat it out.

I have no issue whatsoever with struggling to win a game because the opposite team is superior, you cant win every game, thats a natural part of the game, but such a restriction as it is right now, should not exist either.

I watched the trailer and it appears that all three maps have vehicles… which sucks. The only good small maps we have no are Haven and Adrift and even they arn’t my favorite.

Sorry I misread that, but yes hopefully the DCL after Crimson will be better. I wouldn’t mind a DLC consisting of remakes either at this point.

> The only reason why good players want “relaxed” matches is to make themselves feel better at other peoples expense.

nope, not that at all. (at least for me).

my friends don’t have much fun when they play with me. Want to know why? Because my trueskill is so much higher than their’s they face opponents far above their skill level most matches. It’s not fun for them since they can’t keep up and not fun for me because I end up doing much of the work.

This is like if I dragged them into my lvl 50 Halo 3 ranked matches. They would get crushed. This is why we need a social structure so nights I’m not playing alone and with friends they can have a fun time as well. Then nights I am alone I can go back into my ranked playlists and go all out.

It worked perfect in halo 3 so I don’t see why Halo 4 cannot adopt this same perfect structure. If playing with friends becomes a hassle and isn’t fun for the whole party because trueskill is matching players against foes far above their skill level game after game then whats the point of playing this game with friends who have different skill gaps?

I completely agree,I just went into a king of the hill match and both games my teammates were beyond horrible. They spent all game running in circles dyeing and when a vehicle came up in Ragnarok if someone else got it they shot it until it broke and made me (the only person trying to play the objective) one shot.

343 you guys have to change this matchmaking system to ideally make it like Halo 3 had it because the only way to have fun is to make an account (or have my buddies make new accounts) every week and basically just play through until I encounter the same issues. I have clocked over 75,000 kills in the halo franchise (just calculated yesterday for giggles) and I can tell you that this is not the way to do things. I know that it isn’t easy to match people up exactly and that the kids who play bad just complain. I was one of those bad kids in halo 2 and midway through halo 3 and by that time I enjoyed matchmaking so much I bought all the map packs and played through it.

You guys need to also find a way to like he said reward whomever is “backpacking” the team because odds are they are the people who have put tons of time and or money into learning how to play the entire halo franchise.
