A true compromise on sprint?

I’ve been thinking about ways to have an actual compromise on sprint and not the “We know there are people that don’t like sprint and people that don’t mind sprint so we comprised and added sprint”.

What are some of the common complaints about sprint?
It slows down gameplay by allowing players to more easily escape from a fight.
Maps are usually altered to compensate for the increased movement speed.

I’ve thought of two ways to actually compromise on this.

  1. Disabling sprint based on game mode and/or map variant. Let’s be real, sprint has no place in the 4v4 arena style gameplay Halo is most known for. If sprint is kept in larger game modes like BTB, Warzone, or Infection that’s fine. Disabling it for 4v4 arena game modes would keep the skill ceiling high.

  2. Allow shooting while sprinting. The biggest (and most annoying) argument for sprint is “Why shouldn’t a super soldier be able to sprint?”. Counter argument: Why shouldn’t a super soldier be able to sprint and shoot at the same time? This could possibly solve the issue of sprint slowing down gameplay as now the person on the offensive can effectively chase down their target. Of course sprint wouldn’t be unlimited and there’d need to be some kind of debuff while sprinting like lower accuracy.

Tell me how these sound or add more ideas.

If only it was so easy.

See the huge classic movement thread that is still active… over 5.5k replies… and is never far from the front page.

For those who like sprint - it definitely needs to be in 4v4. It’s just as much about movement options as it is about speed. Map sizes just need to be stretched a bit to accommodate.

And shoot and sprint are already closely entwined. You can pretty much shoot instantaneously from sprint in Halo 5 (at least with the light weight weapons). Your gun may not be up… but it only takes a moment to get your shot off. The penalties for sprinting are harder to aim (for the first shot) and being forced to drop out of sprint. For some those sorts of checks and balances help round out the gameplay.

But anyway, the Mods will surely lock this thread pretty soon… so head over to the Classic Movement thread and you’ll see both sides of the arguments in full swing.

The tradeof of sprint is to not be able to shoot or reload. And I think that works.

The only thing I don’t like is that the character “gets tired”. Maybe in MP is important to get tired, but for a single player mode, there are a few things in games that make me feel more tired in real life than getting tired in a game and have to bother about it again.

I think sprinting would be more fun if the actual mechanic was fun. If there was some acceleration, some inertia, some camera tilting hen turning…
