A thought on the current supply of customization options (and how to earn them)

I just want to start of by saying that I absolutely love the gameplay. It’s the most fun I’ve had in a Halo game since probably Halo Reach. However, I (like many other people) have a bit of hard time accepting the current state of customizations, what’s available to us at the moment and how unlocks work.

As of now we have zero armor options available from start and only a few base coatings and emblems (correct me if I’m wrong). Unless you want to spend more money on the game than you’ve already done if you pre-ordered or are plannign on bying the full game, you’re out of luck (as of now). The only way to unlock items in a reasonable pace is to buy the BP. I’m still hoping that this will change when the campaign releases on the 8th of December and that we at least get rewarded somehow for supporting the game. For example non-payed ways to unlock new customization options. Otherwise loyal fans who actually pay for the game pretty much get punished by only getting 50% of the content for the price of a full game. If that makes any sense.

What I’m saying is that every previous Halo game has included both campaign and multiplayer in the price. Now that multiplayer is F2P we essentially pay full price for half the game/content and on top of that (since MP is F2P) we are expected to also pay real money if we ever want to unlock anything at all in MP. At least in the current state of the game.

This BP system would’ve felt more fair/justified if there was a wider range of options available for us to unlock from start (solely through game progression). Imagine the ranking/credit system in Halo Reach. Items unlocked by leveling up and then available to buy with in game credits earned by playing the game and scoring medals. Then the BP could offer more rare and uniqe armor pieces and coatings for those who like to pay a bit extra.

In the current state it frankly feels quite disrespectful to us long time Halo fans who actually want to pay for the game and the content that SHOULD be included in the price. I’m extremely disappointed if this is the case. But again, I will wait until full release before I fully lose faith.

Keeping in mind this is BETA Multiplayer, I was discussing these topics with my friends who have played since Halo C.E. and I think there will be many more options when the full Multiplayer is released.

I do have two ideas of what I would like to see address the current perceived issue in regards to customization and unlocking visuals in the battle pass.

  1. Every 5 levels in the battle pass reward a “Spartan Point”, which would be used to buy/unlock armor from a database/selection screen like in Halo 5’s Requisitions/Collection menu screen. Example Bp Lv5 is a free Spartan Point, Bp Lv10 is premium Spartan Point, Lv 15 is free, Lv 20 is premium.
Point Pricing for Armor: Set Arms or Legs cost 1 Spartan Point. Chest and/or Back costs 2 Spartan Points each. Helmets cost 3 Spartan Points each. Event Armor Sets (Complete) cost 10 Spartan Points.
Licensed Armor Kits are purchasable with Credits only. and Credits only for smalls things. Example. 300 Credits for Event/Legendary Weapon Kits, 200 Credits for Event/Legendary Kill Effects and Armor Visual Effects, 100 Credits for Event/Legendary Weapon Charms and Wrist decor.

OR

Have a buy now option for Credits if players do not want to take the time to earn specific things. Example: Eliminate 50 opponents using sniper class weapons to unlock the Scout Chest. Capture 50 enemy flags to unlock Recon Chest. If weapon charms were created which looked like the medals, you could buy now for 100 Credits or Unlock it with 500 corresponding medals.

I suspect this and the main campaign game cost over $400,000,000 combined to make. Thousands of people who worked on this game for years. I think most people are willing to spend $1 one hundred times than spend $100 once.
