A technical breakdown of Halo Infinites visuals.

https://youtu.be/KnQd6W9BxLg

This video explains a lot about how the lighting is one of the primary reasons for why the visuals in the Halo infinite demo looked flat. It’s something I’d partially assumed as it’s lit as dusk throughout most of the demo and not a lot of things are getting directly lit.

I’m pretty confident that whenever the Raytracing update goes live that the game is going to look a lot better. As even in the trailer we can see the scenes wherever there are direct light sources look fantastic, master chiefs armour in the pelican with the 3d map displayed in front of him is a good example of this.

Regardless the game is unfinished and I suspect that build they showed could be upwards of 6 months old given the current state of things.

I read a lot of misinformation on these forums people throwing around a lot of assumptions without any actual knowledge of game development. Hopefully this extremely detailed video helps people to understand what’s going on.

Last thing I will say, I don’t understand the choice to make the Brutes bald…

Evryone has been saying they think the build is 6 months old. I cant find one developer saying that. I think people hope its a 6 month old build because it was infact poorer than anyone had hoped.

Do you have any info on the 6 months old everyone is talking about?

They say bad lighting and lack of ray tracing (which won’t be on one but who cares, and won’t be on series x at launch, which is bad) is the worst offender, but they also list bad effects and some weak textures like armours being of some generic plastic material rather than the reflective shiny alien armour of the other halos

No it’s more an assumption given the state of the the world and generally how these sorts of demos work. More often than not they’re older builds that are more stable and have bugs worked out. They’re usually removed from the main portion of the game and take development time away from the main games development because they don’t want a build that’s going to crash or have serious bugs. Given that people are working from home for the last 5 months it’s safe to assume that it’s a pretty old build.

The other thing is that if you look at the way that demo opens, with that press start screen there’s a decent chance that demo was intended to be playable for media at E3. Which would further explain why they’d want a more stable build.

It’s all assumption but call it an educated guess. More often then not what they show at E3 especially on games that are coming in hot are an older build of the game.

I don’t disagree there, however I do believe that the final version of this games visuals will be really nice when Ray tracing is implemented whenever that is.

The weakest aesthetic to me throughout the whole demo is the brutes, they’re big, blocky, the armour looks uninteresting and flat, they’re also bald so thier faces lack any character.

On a bright note though, I think the gameplay we saw looked fantastic, and that’s something that would be much harder to improve by launch. I expect that the visuals will see an improvement.

Everyone talking about the 6 months old build is sourcing an Alanah Pearce video where she is rephrasing what Aaron Greenberg told here in an interview in another video.

The truth is Aaron Greenberg had the chance during the interview to says that the demo was based on a build made 6 months ago. But he did not. He simply said that this is a work in progress and that they are seeing improvements week after week.

The video of digital foundry is really good at explaining why the demo looks flat and that the solution is basically ray tracing. But the issue here is that 343i already said that ray tracing will be available in a post launch update. So if digital foundry is right, we already know that the game will look bad on the release date, and might look better, in the future, on XSX and PC, but not on Xbox One.

Nice one. Some good elements, but a lot of bad faith.

For instance he complains that there is no shadows under an elite that is in the shadow.

Anyway, it is alarming that in a couple of day people are making a lot of videos detailing all what is wrong and they find a lot of valid points. I don’t see how 343i is going to fix this before launch.

I mean it’s mostly lighting and textures, I think we’ll see a difference with the final game for sure. I remember the Halo 5 beta looked far worse than what we got in the final game and this is supposed to be pre alpha footage of the game we saw. I was also watching a video where a supposed Microsoft insider who apparently proved he’s legit said that the build of the game we saw was 4 months old running on a mid ranged PC that is meant more for debugging than graphical performance.

I’m not saying that there’s not room for improvement on the visual end nor am I saying that I’m not a little bit worried about how rushed things seem right now with the game, however I do believe the game will launch looking considerably better than what we saw. And I know that whenever that Raytracing update finally comes it’s obviously going to make the game look ALOT better

Ray tracing is not the only way to fix the lighting nor, likely, the solution to all the graphical issues. Hopefully they’ll make it look more decent for launch and then ray tracing will bring a further improvement.

I believe they’ll fix the light but I’m more worried about the awful cartoon HW2 effects (shots, explosions, fire) and the textures of enemies and vehicles (phantom especially). That they might not want or have the time to fix, so the game will look cleaner but still have weird unrealistic cartoon-like art like HW2.

I did not say that ray tracing is the one and only solution.

In their video Digital Foundry focuses on the issue of “flateness”.
Basically they explain that Halo Infinite is using dynamic lightning, but without ray tracing. As a consequence objects in shadow are badly lite: they glow and their texture is not visible. Having ray tracing is apparently the only solution to solve this issue.

What I say is that if all the game textures require ray tracing to be rendered properly, not having ray tracing at launch is a major problem.

But it does not solve other issues like not having plasma grenade light up near object or leaving scorch marks after explosions. Or not having blood marks on the ground. Or having the grass pop in and out in front of you. Or…

If you don’t believe the 6 months thing that’s okay, but you can easily see the proof in the trailer watch it in 4k it’s clearly got more details on the shadows and even the brute talking to chief… So there definitely is different builds

I wasnt saying i didnt believe them. I was just wondering if someone had infact said it was 6 months old.

Im truly happy if it is. I watched the 4k. It was a little better.

A supposed insider has said it it is apparently 5 months old.

That’s still concerning though. Let’s assume the build is five months old. Why use such an old build? E3 was only supposed to be a month ago, so that’s not an excuse. If it’s because the current built is so unstable that they couldn’t record a functioning on-rails section of the campaign for a demo less than ten minutes long, that may be even more concerning.

What I find even more worrying is that they seem proud of the demo.

  • The demo was the first thing shown at the XSX game - Halo Infinite is supposed to be a technical showcase for the XSX which is supposed to be the most powerful console ever - Ani Shastry, the Development Manager of the graphics team, said “it took a herculean effort to make sure this little corner of our Ringworld was polished and pretty enough for its premiere” - Aaron Greenberg when asked about the graphics seemed to not understand the problem and said that he is not worried and that they are still improving the graphicsFrom all of this it seems that 343i, Xbox and Microsoft are all proud of what they show and what they show already took them a lot of effort.

From this it is easy to understand why the demo might be an old build. If it took them an “herculean” effort to make it barely just ok to watch, they may not want to redo the demo every month.

But it does not look good for the final game. Given all I said before I don’t see how they are going to polish the whole game and improve the graphics so that it does not look like a 360 game before the end of the year.

Game-pass means that future games will be of lower quality because they will no longer have to worry about selling copies the hard way.

> 2533274925473364;18:
> Game-pass means that future games will be of lower quality because they will no longer have to worry about selling copies the hard way.

Don’t see how that works. Logic is majorly flawed.

Please everyone stop focusing on graphics. The graphics is the last thing to consider about whether or not the game will be amazing. It looks and feels like a halo game and it will play accordingly on launch
