With regards to the recent posting from 343i, if you really want to go the route of micro transactions and making this a live service game, at least give us the “default” 60 colors palette and possibly two or three “coatings” and “shaders” just to vary it up.
Given the amount of armors your creative team seemed to dump into Halo 5, it should be no problem making countless coatings, additional colors, and shaders that can be bought or achieved without feeling the need to lock even the basic palette for our spartans behind a paywall.
What are your guys’ thoughts?
i think everybody went crazy, we aren’t forced to pay and even with only a default color… wtf, it’s a f2p game!
I think that coatings should be similar to the Destiny Shaders, by that I mean once you have the coating you can apply it to any weapon, armor, vehicle but they’re not doing it that way. You can’t have a set of the same coating without unlocking/buying it for all your equipment. The monster energy drink promotion proves this by having the same coating on the weapons but you have to unlock it for each individual weapon, you can’t just apply it to anything you want which is a trash system. Ultimately their plan is to charge us as much as possible with micro transactions. Basically you have to pay for the campaign as a full priced game and they’re claiming “oh we gonna give you the multiplayer for free” so theoretically they’re taking content away from the main game and calling it free so they can charge you with a crap load of micro transactions making you think that they did it of kind heart.
I personally think that;
- all coatings should be treated as a better system than destiny 2. Once you have the coating it can be applied to any equipment, any Armor, any vehicle, and once it’s unlocked it’s there. Not the abysmal inventory system like how destiny 2 works.
- they should cover every basic colour coating at launch without the need to unlock it. So maybe 30 from day zero.
- if at all possible, they should re-introduce the two colour system as a single “custom coating” option where you select the colours like any halo game it just doesn’t have texture or extras on it. That way you have both systems, the old system though not improved, and the opportunity to embrace the new system.
if they want to give us options to express ourselves more they shouldn’t take features away and introduced a more restrictive acute systems that have less flexibility. Then again if it is indeed better somehow, they haven’t at all showed us that. But that’s on them.

That’s what I meant by similar to Destiny (not exactly like Destiny) but if you recall in the original Destiny a shader would apply to your entire set and in Destiny 2 you were able to apply the shader to any weapon, vehicle armor once you had unlocked it, there was no need to unlock multiple variants of the same shader. 343 are making it so you have to unlock the coating for each separate piece of weaponry, vehicle which is garbage. I just really hope this Halo game doesn’t flop, the franchise has been damaged enough. Everyone I use to play halo with has moved on and it’s heartbreaking.

For destiny 2 you can unlock and buy more with in game currency. For example I ran out of the midnight talons shader yesterday and needed to buy more through the collections menu. My main gripe is the inventory system. Once it’s full you can’t collect more shaders and have to constantly empty and exchange them, etc. the whole system could simply be cleaned up my removing the inventory part entirely and just so it through the collections. But also it’s hard to sometimes get the colours you want, even my favourites I wish some of the colours could be swapped. Frustrating but it’s close enough so something I would like.
I just don’t get why they are thinking so backwards about it. If it was a new system in some other way that doesn’t take away the old, people wouldn’t have such a huge problem. Halo 4 I was happy with, halo 5 just disappointed me a lot. MP was best I played but that story and campaign was unforgiving.
Like you’re suggesting, they need the win, they need to knock it out of the park, and especially right now, they need to give us a reason to be excited for the game. Marketing at the moment is non existent and their only announcements or information we are getting is a punch in the gut. Then when they respond that don’t contribute anything positive whatsoever to the conversation. I’ve kept checking the forums daily and each day I’m constantly surprised we haven’t got anything at all. There’s rumours we might get something November 9th, we are close to that date but it’s still too far away. Just baffles me that they aren’t saying anything.
