I’m curently finishing up Halo 3 tonight after doing a whole series play through to be fresh on the facts of the story (something i do every once and a while, and since Chief awaken in 15 days and counting what a better time than to do it than now)
I think everyone should do a series play through in this order.

Halo Reach
Halo CE (or CEA which ever one you prefer)
Halo 2 (Missions 1-3)
Halo 3 ODST
Halo 2 (Missions 4-finish)
Halo 3 (Finish the Fight)
Recommendations
Easy - Only if you are looking for a stroll in the park to get to the next epic cut scene.
Normal- Only if you are looking for the most authentic Halo game play; to savor every precious moment you remember about Bungie’s great games
Heroic- Honestly I can’t think of a reason to play heroic …just go to legendary
Legendary- ONLY if you looking for a challenge, and willing to risk a brain hemorrhage(no pun intended.) You can do this with friend or if you daringly want to try it by your self be my guest.
Halo 3 (Last mission) I believe everyone should do that last Halo 3 mission on Legendary to get the last cut scene we know about John 117.
