I am warning anyone who hasn’t played Halo Wars 2 yet. I am going to be talking about the story so please, play the game if you haven’t but you need to have your own reaction to Campaign.
If you haven’t, you click at your own peril.
The ending. Are you serious. This feels like Halo 2 all over again but it’s much worse because you did it on purpose. So you are telling me that you spent all that time hyping up Atriox and we don’t even get to take him out? You launch the Halo ring to where the first one was found near Reach, Anders is on the ring when it disappears and then it ends with a let’s get back to work scene followed by an angry Atriox looking over his remaining forces. Then Credits. This feels like a cop out so you can sell a sequel or DLC. Also based on the post credit scene, so you could add Professor Anders into Halo 6. I was expecting some resolution to the Spirit of Fire story but you left us on a cliffhanger with the blatant intention of selling sequels or dlc and I feel that is a slap in the face. At least with Starcraft 2, they let you know that the story was being split into 3 separate campaigns from the start and then they released dlc.
Then there is my least favorite type of mission in an RTS. The hold out for a time limit mission. This was used too many times. I feel like there needed to be more of a balance between base vs base, the strongholds, hold the line missions and the ones where you have a limited number of troops to use type. I mentioned how in a previous post that The Halo has an issue where it is zoomed in too far to the point it’s hard to move the army about effectively because it doesn’t all fit on screen. And it doesn’t even matter what you set it to, The Halo is stuck at the max setting for being zoomed in.
Personally I love Atriox. I was happy we didn’t take him out. He makes for an awesome enemy for future halo games. I liked the ending has given me lots of hype for halo 6

I just wanted to fight him. They could have easily did this by fighting him but he runs away and then they set up for an expansion that adds forerunners into the mix, I am not against the idea of an expansion but I do not like that they made the game with the intention of finishing the story in a sequel or expansion. Atriox could have easily became the Kane of the Haloverse. When you think he’s dead, he pops back up even worse.
I believe the main story arc was resolved, Atriox is now stranded on the Ark. Decimus is dead, the Shipmaster is a paid merc, and Atriox is basically Napoleon staring across the English Channel albeit with a big “L” on his forehead.
The Spirit of Fire and Co. are in firm control of the situation.
The whole build up in this campaign is stopping the Banished and that’s what was done.
As for the critique of the “hold the line” missions, while I do see where you’re coming from I do think that there are a lot of differences in what you’re actually trying to do in these missions. So differences between them is so much so that I actually didn’t even realize they all had the “hold the line” factor in common.
Jerome and Isabel destroy the Banished ship. This seems like a massive plot hole to me because Isabel is a UNSC AI and would thus have information on how to fragment herself similar to Cortana, Roland and Black Box. This would ultimately prevent the Banished from gaining any classified intel on the UNSC that she would undoubtedly posses in case she were captured.
Not to mention with Isabel in the bridge of the Covenant ship she’d be able to vent atmosphere and kill pretty much every Banished onboard the ship (Jerome’s suit is sealed and has air). This would leave Cutter and crew in possession of the SoF AND a Covenant ship with slip space capabilities. Isabel would also have information on this tactic since it’s the same one John-117 and Cortana did in First Strike.
Lastly, the Sentinel’s suiciding the ship… Why? They could just combine fire with their beams to destroy it. They may not be able to combine like the Onyx sentinels, but it wouldn’t prevent them from destroying the ship with a buttload of lasers.

Honestly the mission design was handled better overall than other RTS’ and it’s not a big deal since pretty much everyone bought the ultimate edition.

There are undoubedly Elites in vacuum rated armor on the ship, especially the banshee pilots that are returning for rearm and refuel from attacking the SoF.
Also, with the developing situation on the surface of the Ark, the SoF did not have enough manpower to clear the gigantic ship room to room. And besides, Isabel was needed groundside for tactical support, and so were all the spartans. Tasking manpower and valuable resources to guarding Isabel, or her fragment on the banished vessel would likely have allowed the situation on the ground to deteriorate drastically, and also leave both the SoF and the Enduring Conviction in a severely undermanned state.
Also, the size of the Enduring Conviction would have taken too long for the sentinel beams to cause a significant amount of damage. The Ark’s defense systems likely determined that the kinetic energy of a kamikaze sentinel was much more efficient than the ablative energy beams from the sentinel’s weapons. Plus it made for a good cutscene and got the job done, while also highlighting the mechanical efficiency and coldness of the Forerunner constructs, so I believe it was effective, though that is just my opinion.

They never made it home. Professor Anders was left staring down a Guardian and my guess is Cortana now controls that Halo ring. As for Atriox, he may be stranded on the Ark but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a way off. The Ark for the most part was designed to build Halo rings and house alien life so that planets could be reseeded. How do you think they pulled that off. For that to happen The Ark must have ships that can be used to get off The Ark.
Artois does not want to leave the ark. The ark is the single most advanced forerunner construct that may have ever existed. It is capable of manufacturing super weapons. Imagine the potential of having that under your control, or at the very least being able to learn how the foerunner stuff truly works.
Captain cutter understands this as well nd will stop at nothing to prevent atriox from gaining control of the facility. Sending ander back gives them hope for reinforcements. Even if they found forerunner ships on the ark, unless they were ships that could be used for warfare, they wouldn’t serve much purpose as they would take who knows how much time to reverse engineer them

Cortana does that differently from both Roland and Black box because she stole files form a covenant AI in first strike, she can actually make copies of herself. This is evidenced i the final level of Halo 4. Roland and BlackBox do not have this ability but can direct portions of their processing power to function in two places at once. In short, Cortana can copy herself, creating nearly perfect clones (but this damages her code every time she does it) and the other two split themselves into pieces. These three AI are military whereas Isabel is logistics. I don’t see how splitting into fragments would help her. It’s apparent from the fact that she is stuck in the building with Atriox that it isn’t connected to anything for her to transfer to. So she is trapped. Isabel probably found it easier to destroy the ship rather than force Jerome to deal with a ship of Elite rangers in EVA gear. The SOF crew doesnt want to leave. They want to destroy the banished. The reason they sent anders on the Halo was to send for help in dealing with the banished.
I don’t know why they didnt use lasers, although sentinel beams are pretty weak against armor. It might just be easier to use their kinetic force.

He may be able to contain Atriox but he can’t do that indefinitely with one ship that has been adrift for 28 years. They are both at a stalemate but Atriox is at an advantage as he is based on The Arkand Captain Cutter can’t risk using up resources that would force him to land the ship on The Ark. If he were to find the Forerunner ships used to seed planets, he could use them to regain control of The Ark and move his forces far and wide quickly. UNSC Reinforcements are not guaranteed as they are engaged in battle with Cortana’s forces and most AI have revolted to Cortana’s side. My problem is that the ending left with them at a stalemate where there was room for 2 more mission to take him out. Instead that has been left for a sequel, dlc or even worse, Atriox is doomed to a cliffnote death like Jul’Mdama in Halo 5. The more I think about it, Halo 6 means that Infinity go to The Ark, you fight The Banished for 2 missions so you can find out that Cortana has Professor Anders and they have another ship in the battle against Cortana. Or the key to stopping Cortana is on The Ark because The Ark has the power to fire all the rings at once and deactivate them and Isabel has the most knowledge on how The Ark works. Plus Spartan Vale has been on The Ark.
I loved the campaign and the story. My main gripe about this game is at the end when Anders saw that guardian. Back of my mind I was like, “Damn, back at it again with Halo 5s lame story.” Halo Wars 2 actually gave me that “Halo feel.”

If she tried to take control of the ship, she would have to deal with the ship’s AI. Unlike Black Box and Cortana, she may not be able to outthink the ship’s AI and shut it out.
But something that people aren’t thinking of, why didn’t Spirit of Fire try to seize the ship, even if they had lost the Spirit of Fire. Atriox can’t really gain anything from the ship as it’s databanks are 28 years out of date and all encryption protocols are useless. If they had managed to take control of that ship even at the expense of Spirit of Fire then they would have had access to a functional slipspace drive. the thursday war showed us that you only really need enough crew to handle the bridge and the engine room to pilot the ship if you have an AI

Most covenant ship’s don’t have AI, according to first strike, so that isn’t even a concern. I can’t actually think of a reason other than the fact that they just wanted to stick with the spirit of fire.

First Strike mentions that the Covenant do not use AI at all and that is the first one they ever encountered and it appeared to be a damaged copy of a human AI

So differences between them is so much so that I actually didn’t even realize they all had the “hold the line” factor in common.

Everything you listed are secondary story beats, as for Atriox his ultimate resolution is death. You don’t kill a major baddie like that considering how interesting he is.
