A Question for you story fanatics

Ok, we’re approaching the last month of our wait for Halo 5. It honestly feels so frustrating, yet so amazingly good to feel this hyped up and anxious to play a video game again, and I’m super happy it’s with a Halo game. I’m 25 years old now and haven’t been this amped since Halo 2 came out. So thanks for having me a part of this community hype.

I want to get (more) familiar with the story. I bought the Halo novel box set which has The Fall Of Reach, First Strike, and The Flood. I wanted to ask, what else should I read and what order should I be reading it in.

I’m not the fastest reader so I really need to get started ASAP.

Thanks for your help!

The Forerunner saga’s a shout. Really helps understand the Didact and elevates him above ‘some -Yoink- that hates humanity’. Contact Harvest is also a really good book.

Is say those three that you have are probably the best to have. Mostly because blue team has a very interesting dynamic that is entirely new to the games.

Have fun!

Halo Hunters in the Dark introduces Olympia Vale. Halo Escalation comics tell what happens after Halo 4 and introduces Holly Tanaka along with many other new characters. Halo New Blood tells the stpry of how Edward Buck became a Spartan-IV. I would really suggest Halo Ghosts of Onyx after reading the books of the novel set as it picks up where First Strike left off. Also Greg Bear’s Forerunner trilogy ( contains Cryptum, Primordium, Silentium ) is a great read and expalins the Didact’s real motive. And Halo Last Light, the latest book which released a week ago is a really good book, it tells more about Fred as a person.

If you’re short on time I think New Blood was the shortest. Have you played ODST? Most underrated game in the series IMO. If you haven’t played it in a while. Play it again and don’t skip any cut scenes. Then read New Blood.

read kilo five trilogy and broken circle. loved broken circle cause i prefer sangheili o anything else

Skip Kilo Five all you’re getting from that is why Jul hates us so much. Everything else sucked hard.

I’d say at least get Fall of Reach done so that you know the origins of Blue team (Chief, Kelly, Fred, and Linda)

Theres a lot to catch up on after that but at least get to know em

Skip “the flood” because it nearly retells all of halo one.

I only say this if you feel pressed for time and want as much info as possible before h5 launch

He’s right. The Flood is the only book that retells the campaign of one of the games. Plus the Anniversary edition of H1 brings some of the good stuff to life in the cutscenes.

Skip The Flood. It’s a real snooze-fest. You’re better off just replaying CE.
If you want a good primer for H5 I’d recommend getting caught up on Halo: Escalation. I believe there’s like 3 trade paperbacks out now? The next one doesn’t come out for a while so you’d have to buy the most recent issues.
New Blood and Hunters in the Dark would also be good primers, but since time is limited and you’re a slow reader I’d definitely just focus on Escalation. Or you could always do audio books. I tend to finish those quicker than I do the books since I can listen to them while doing other things.

C’mon now. Only like 1/2, maybe 2/3, is the same as the game. There’s the whole other 1/2-1/3 story in the novel that is never touched in the game.

The Flood isn’t the best Halo book, but it certainly is worth reading.

Everything except Kilo-5 trilogy-not worth it in a time crunch or needed for Halo 5. Afterwards sure if you want info on other Spartan 2s and the Insurrection.

Definitely read it at some point, but if your trying to get some good reading in before Oct 27th skip The Flood.

I’d say read Fall of Reach and First Strike (In that order). The Flood is incredibly boring so I’d skip over it. After you get those finished up, try to read the newer books that pertain to Halo 5 as soon as you can, then finish up series like Kilo-V and the Forerunner Trilogy afterwards, if you’re still interested.

This guy/gal said it all!

Definitely read Last Light. It was fantastic, and it made me so much more excited (if that was possible) to be fighting alongside Fred in H5. Can’t wait.

First strike is the one I hate the most because of this impossible thing: time travel.

If you had any issues with how the Covenant Remnant came to be the Kilo 5 trilogy isn’t too terrible; got some gaps but it is a really enjoyable group of characters up until the last book and it ties back into the ONI hate that has been slowly been teased throughout the Hunt the Truth stuff so there’s that.

After those 3, Ghost’s of Onyx is a must. But in terms of what you need to read to better understand Halo 5 specifically…

The Fall of Reach- for Blue Team and the general backstory of the Halo Universe
The Forerunner Trilogy- to understand the Forerunner side of things
And Hunt the Truth, to understand ONI (because you don’t have the time to bother with Kilo 5)

In that order. Have fun!

Glasslands and Thursday war are alright. Mortal dictata is just kind of pointless though. It drops the Jul and Telcam subplots which were the best parts of the first 2.

Start with the wiki’s and just browse through the topics. The Halo Universe has grown a lot since those 3 books.
