A Plea to 343 - Don't Listen to the Fans

Hey 343!

I didn’t think I would be making one of these threads, I always thought it’s pretty senseless for one guy to spout his suggestions to in hopes of influencing you somehow, but here it is anyway.

343, I know you’re the new kid on the block, and you want everyone to be your friend. The problem is with the divisions people make; Just like in High School, you can’t be friends with both the jocks and the nerds; those kids just don’t get along together.

It’s the same with gaming, you can’t please the casual and the competitive crowds at the same time, they’re opposites. One side wants the game easier and players to be on even terms, the other wants things to be more challenging and for every success to be based on a slope of player skill. I’m not advocating either, in fact I’m advocating neither.

343, you’re still too young to be looking for a serious relationship. You need to take the time to find yourself, to figure out who you are and what you want. I hope you take this advice, and stop listening to the fans and become more introspective. If you just take the time, you’ll find the wisdom within yourself. I want you to grow up to be the best gaming company you can be, I want you to make the game that YOU want to make. Be above the influence, don’t let the fans peer pressure you into making the game they want; what do they know? You’re the one with the college degrees.

I have faith in you, 343. Some day, you’re going to make a fine woman.

Unconditionally yours,
Alzarahn*

You seriously suggesting that 343i don’t need fan feedback?

> It’s the same with gaming, you can’t please the casual and the competitive crowds at the same time, they’re opposites.

I disagree. Halo: CE and Halo 2 are perfect examples of being fun for everyone.

And at the end of the day 343i are looking for a relationship. With your wallet. Or they won’t exist.

Pretty smarmy stuff I’m reading here OP. You want to give out backrubs to the 343i staff too?

> Be above the influence, don’t let the fans peer pressure you into making the game they want; what do they know?

This is ludicrous! Don’t let the fans peer pressure you into making the game they desire? Really?

if you give the fans what they want it will end up breaking the game, there is a reason why fans don’t make games …

And that isn’t the reason. The sign of a good developer is taking the ideas of the fans, then working them into the game in a way in which they work. Not outright ignoring the fans and making whatever they want to, which is what is being suggested by this post if I’m understanding it correctly.

I’m simply suggesting that 343 makes the game they want to make, instead of trying to please the diehard and diverse fanbases of a half-dozen previous titles. If they make the game their own way, they will develop a fresh fanbase of their very own.

And yes, I’d love to give them backrubs. I would need to have the oil and one of those bed/table things with the toilet-seat-lid-headrest-thing ready beforehand though.

Do you think Bungie sat down on Halo CE and said “We need to create a lucrative franchise and listen to a diverse fanbase so people will buy, buy, buy!” or did they have a couple guys in a studio saying “Hey, the current game build is tons of fun, but it would be even more fun if we added X. We hope other people will enjoy it too!”

ok then, lets work every idea that every fan has ever had into the game, we shall have stupid stuff like 1 hit kill AR, no movement, vehicles that shoots rocks! totally awesome right?

no, it is completely stupid, you don’t implement what the fans ask for directly, you look into the idea and see if it is good and how it works, if it is beneficial to the game and creates an even more positive experience then you add it, but, for the most part you take their feedback with a grain of salt unless it is well constructed and use what they say as more of a guide then what to do.

fans dictating the game = a bad game.

So you want 343 to be like how Bungie was? Where whenever there was a flaw or unbalance in the game they would go “-Yoink- you we don’t care”

I think 343 shouldn’t listen to you

> I think 343 shouldn’t listen to you

Everybody has a right to voice their opinion

I’m not saying they shouldn’t support a game after release, but they should treat it like their game and not the fan’s game. If it’s not broke don’t fix it, if it is broke then take care of it in their own way.

> > I think 343 shouldn’t listen to you

Just because you have an audience doesn’t mean you should say whatever you want, because to me this just looks like flamebait waiting for people to argue about how Halo must be about this and Halo must be about that blah blah blah

Everybody has a right to voice their disagreement with other’s opinions.

> but they should treat it like their game and not the fan’s game

Name one game sequel that was not made for the fans

Castlevania II. I swear that game was made to piss everyone off.

I am just stating that that post was pretty borderline in calling out members… and the game’s sequel is not necessarily made for the fan (espicially since sequels are not as good as the original) but are made to generate revenue.

> > but they should treat it like their game and not the fan’s game

every game is made for its fans or any possible fan they are aiming for, if it wasn’t then they wouldn’t have a reason to make the game, but, making the game for their fans lettings the fans design the game are 2 different things.

alzarahn isn’t asking them to not make the games for the fans, he’s simply asking them not let the fans dictate how the game should be.

Damn you have a good point

Because the best way to generate revenue is to ignore the people who buy your game.
