So I’m some what of a Halo veteran. Been playing since Halo 2 came out on the original XBOX and that’s when I fell in love with its multiplayer and subsequently went on to play multiplayer for hours on end with every game that came out since. Then comes Halo 5 Guardians. For a while things were fine, I could have fun and rack up kills and points and help my team to victory. Now however it feels like the multiplayer is just catering more and more to the competitive crowd. For a moment put your self in my shoes. A guy suffering from ADHD and possibly other mental health issues. Try to understand how frustrating it is trying to play a game you used to have fun playing only to now be beaten into the dirt in nothing more than a one-sided slaughter, losing every match with only 1 or 2 kills to deaths the are in the double digits and only rarely getting a good old fun match. I feel that with the game catering more and more to competitive players it’s become more and more inaccessible to the likes of me. I know people might see this and reply with, “Git gud scrub,” but that isn’t the point of this. On behalf of myself and others like me I feel as if things should be a bit more…accessible to us. Not necessarily easier since some will complain about that but work things about so that those who find it difficult to learn a game as easily as others and obtain the same amount of skill, like myself as an example, can have a better chance at keeping up.
I sympathize. This is how I’ve felt about multiplayer since… ever. I’m not sure I blame the competitive nature of the game. To me every version of Halo has been too sweaty. But the thing I blame far more than game play is the ranking systems. There has never been a system that could judge me accurately and provide balanced matches based on that judgment. 2 was bad. 3 was worse. Reach… who can say? I never played the arena there. 4 strangely seemed to be able to rank me accurately and match me appropriately - a first, and only, for Halo. 5 is right back to the same old same old. Thank the Halo gods for warzone.
Git gud scrub jks. What you could do is try getting a team to start playing competitively, it’s pretty fun and it’s much easier to play with a team instead of randoms. Alternately what you could also do is play something casual more like BTB or wait until Social Slayer is permanent. Im guessing they’re bringing in more game types soon such as Action Sack? I do agree that Halo 5 is a bit too much of a sweat fest and I’m guessing that its the consequences of the community complaining that Halo 4 was too casual, so now the players who just want to kick back and relax can’t even do that. (Even the Social Playlists have hidden CSR)
But if you’re playing ranked and getting stomped on continually, eventually you’ll find your level and end up playing with and against people of Your own ability… Hopefully.
Its because the placement system is more inaccurate at ranking you properly than using the constellations to predict the weather. People are placing too low far too often and as a result those ranked correctly have to suffer in mayches against them. I always rank plat/low diamond in ffa initially (onyx 1752 this season and reached onyx every season in ffa) and so i have to play and beat people who are below my skill level. Unfair on them cos they get beaten and drop ranks tbrough playing players they shouldnt be and unfair on me to have to grind up when others dont.
That i think is where it is going wrong. The placements are wrong and causinb the majority of problems i see.
Not to completely ignore the competitive aspect, but have you played custom games with a bunch of friends? Just last week I played Beam Swords on a 1:1 remake of Beaver Creek with 12 people, complete uncompetitive mayhem!
Honestly I know the frustration, I was really good at Halo 3. I am like a novice in this game. If they would get rid of the ranking reset monthly, I think this would change. There were plenty of really competitive people in the other games, but it’s the ranking system that keeps bringing them down to our level.

If they never reset the ranking the champion CSR would be so high that it would almost unachievable. I see maybe not resetting the lower levels, but the champion/onyx levels wouldn’t work out very well without resetting.
That’s why they have more than just 5 levels. That’s a problem within itself. Platinum 6 and 1 shouldn’t even be in the same category yet we are seeing people complain about Onyx while in gold or even unranked.
