Hypothesis:
Sprint was originally introduced to Halo not to emulate Call of Duty, but to allow the gimmick animated assassinations to occur frequently.

Sir, I believe your hypothesis to be untrue. sips coffee
Do you have any evidence? I propose this hypothesis simply for the reason that sprint allows players to run up behind other players easier, as well as the fact that both sprint and animated assassinations were introduced at the same time.

Beatdowns have been an integral part of Halo since the very first games. Sprint exists solely for the purpose of emulating modern games, as it brings nothing new or beneficial to the table.
Because, my good man, assassinations constitute a vast minority of melee kills. Why, I wager that there is 1 or 2 a game on average!
No, no, their financial gain is the most likely motive. strokes beard
While I concede that your point is correct in its assessment of the percentage of melee kills, I would draw to your attention the fact that not only did 343 industries add more assassinations and even special assassinations to Halo 4 while at the same time adding sprint as a primary function to all players, but also accessory gains from achieving certain amounts of assassinations with the Venator armor.

I think it was partially that, but also to make the Energy Sword and Gravity Hammer more viable weapons.

I see how that makes sense, but they also nerfed the lunges you got with both weapons. The Halo 2 sword lunge was ridiculous.

They already were really good weapons. At least in the hands of skilled player.
Sprint is only there to emulate Modern games, and partially cater to beginners.
Sprint was made default to fix the issue of it being a go-to ability in Reach so that other AAs saw more use. I believe it would have been a better idea to just have remove it with Armor Lock.
We should conclude, beyond a shadow of a raging bull with rabies… that the thoughts of 343i are similar to that of a chimney horse. “A chimney horse?” you might ask. Yes, bred in a distance but born in the past.
This brings me to my next point… molecular solidarity. A.I. in “lay” mans terms. To those who have doubted and shuned the past participle while sipping purple kool aid, you will be blinded forever more while riding backwards on a donkey.

I’d like to propose the possibility that these changes are unrelated.
The entire point of post-Halo 3 assassinations is visual flair. If one sees the same animations often enough to be repetitive, however, then that flair is lost. Adding more animations adds more variety, keeping each animation “fresh” and making the feature more enjoyable.
The fact that Venator armor is awarded through an assassination quota is a separate feature change. During the Reach era, much of the community demanded that armor be modified and tied to in-game deeds, rather than a pseudo-currency. 343i acted on that feedback (unfortunately, in my opinion), so it’s only natural that some armor piece would end up being tied to assassinations.
Finally, making Sprint available to all players was simply an evolution of the previous implementation. Rather than forcing players to choose between Sprint and an Armor Ability, 343i made both available at the same time. Had Halo 4’s Armor Abilities been more balanced, this would have been a brilliant move.
With all this in mind, then, I don’t think there is any direct and intentional connection between Sprint usage and assassination frequency. I think Sprint was added simply to give players more movement options and possibilities.
