I’m not sure if anyone has suggested it yet, but I wanted to share an idea I had for the customisation menu.
I think we can all agree that the horizontal slider for viewing items isn’t very user friendly, and will only get worse with new seasons increasing the item counts.
But what if there are multiple rows of horizontal lines stacked together, like when viewing the Netflix or D+ menus. Each row would basically function as a filter for all the items, and as you move up and down, the menus would fade, so you can still see your Spartan.
It could look like this;
- All Items
- Favourites
- Current Season
- Season X
- Season Y
- Season Z
I include a Favourites row, which you would be able to add to, by pressing X for example. We all have our favourite helmets and other cosmetics, and it would be nice to have an easy way to flick between just them, and not the entire library of items.
They could even allow you to rearrange the rows based on your preference. Maybe you like a lot of the coatings in Season Y, and want that row to appear at the top of the menu when entering.
I just think a system like this would be a far better user interface over what it currently is, and one most of us are probably used to navigating. And it won’t be compromised by the inflation of items as the game gets bigger.
I definitely agree that the horizontal menu is just not that well designed. This is some of the feedback from playing the flight too.
Imagine having 50 helmets unlocked and having the scroll through every single one just to see the one you want. Would take forever.
I think just having a option for helmets, then a display of everything you have in a 4x8 column on one side of the screen & your Spartan on the other would be so much better. And that’s just a very simple UI design without filters or such.
That can then be applied to literally every other customisation option; coatings, attachments, legs, gloves, visors etc.
The overall idea is to be able to quickly see & choose what a player can select. The horizontal menu design does the exact opposite of that in my opinion.
I suppose the halo waypoint (vnext) app will provide the platform for detailed customisation. That’s what I did in the technical preview, I had my beta-halo waypoint app on android and I could very quickly customise. I do fully agree with the idea of the layout suggested, as time passes by that horizontal scrolling will become congested.

The waypoint app was definitely nice during the flight but having the app or website being a better platform than the actual game for customisation would be so strange.
I agree though, the congestion is going to become very real after a few seasons.
