A message to the fans: Which one is it?

I hear countless HCE - 3 veterans claiming infinite is too fast, too much like h5 and not similar enough to the slow/methodical approach to 1 - 3.

Then, I see H5 + other FPS fans claim it’s too slow, that it took a backwards turn from the “additions” of H5. If I have no idea what the fans are even trying to say, how is 343 going to sift through this noise?

In summary, have a bit of awareness that fans are saying the exact opposite of what you’re appealing for. I, personally, think Infinite is great, and is a great mix between the two.

It’s two different generations of players, they’re going to have differing opinions.
I don’t think 343i necessarily need to “sift through the noise”. The foundations for Halo Infinite have been laid down already. Now it’s really just tuning to optimise the experience.

Honestly I think 343i have done a good job at making a middle ground for both old & new players. This is as good as a “best of both worlds” scenario we’re probably ever going to get.

I agree, and am so hyped for it, I just don’t want the opnions of people who don’t matter (i.e don’t like the game or are negative for no constructive reason) to bring it down for the rest of us who otherwise would enjoy how it is.

This game very much feels like a modernised Halo 3.

Halo 4 leaned far too much to the casual players, Halo 5 leaned far too much to the competitive players. Halo Infinite feels like they’ve absolutely crushed the middle ground.

It’s clear what they have set out to achieve and so far it looks like they have made it work really well. The game is very satisfying to play and it looks like it’s going to have a great skill gap. The competitive games should be extremely exciting to play and hard fought and the casual side has BTB which feels super fun and exciting. You can be dominant with a BR if you are skillful but players can still have fun and engaging fights with the AR all over the map.

Exactly. I’m a Halo CE day one player and I think Halo Infinite is pretty quick and I like that. OP is never going to get a definitive answer on this imo.

I agree that 343i have probably done as a good a job as possible in finding a middle ground between players of different tastes. I use different tastes because not all older players want the same thing, just like newer players, everyone is different.

In almost every way, Infinite feels like 343’s way of starting over. Not with the entire Halo franchise, but with the Halo franchise from where they took over.

It is dialling back the radical changes Halo 4 and 5 brought to the table, to give us something that feels more like a natural progression forward from Halo 3 and Reach than the games we got from them before.

This is reflected in the art style and gameplay on so many levels. Even the story. After Halo 3 the universe felt very much in a place where the Covenant would be replaced by a Brute-led faction, not the Remnant from 4 and 5. And here we are with the Banished. The game will begin with Master Chief “waking up” when he is needed.

And yet they are keeping just enough from the 343 era games to not abandon the new fans made along the way. They’re just made to fit Halo’s trademark style better than before. Sprint, slide, clamber, ordinance, match opening cutscenes and map reels, multiplayer music ques, weapon pads and callouts, even ordinance drops.

Classic and robust gameplay a la Halo 3, added to the agility and movement ability of Halo 5. Without a doubt, this is the best resolution to unify both parts of the community.

Several new community disputes need to be resolved, such as AR vs BR (my full support for AR), as well as the whole aim issue, and some minor tweaks. But I am 100% sure that 343 will decide the best option for everything as it is showing us that it has been doing all this time.

I’m loving the vibe so far. Somewhere between Halo 2 and 5.

I am missing thrusters though

Funny how advanced movement as equipment was supposed to be the bridge between the dichotomy of fans… but I’m not sure we’re seeing the love.

The equipment feels like a LOT of fun but I have to admit I’m not sure if any of them are quite as useful as the (largely annoying) thrusters/charge etc from H5.

I’ve seen this loads with Infinite.

Game is too fast!
Game is too slow!

AR is too powerful and has too much range!
AR is useless and needs to be replaced with BR starts!

Aim assist is non existent and I can’t hit anything!
Aim assist is too high and unfair for KBM players!

It must be a nightmare for poor 343 to try and balance this correctly for everyone. Personally I feel like they managed to get a great mix of Halo 3 and Halo 5 and have created the best Halo to date in terms of movement and gunplay.

It’s slower than Halo 5 in the sense we don’t have 6 built in spartan abilities and most of the abilities are controlled through he sandbox which is a good thing, not only sprint is slower while still being useful but it know allows you shoot your gun right away, maps are also no longer designed around saprtan abilities

I feel like if both sides complain it means they struck some kind of balance

Agreed. I think they struck a nice balance and I still think that the majority seem to enjoy the game.

I’ve played all the Halos and infinite feels great. It is a slightly slower Halo 5 without all the movement abilities that made combat so jarring and what is looking to be an incredible sandbox.

Hate to say it but Halo 3 has aged very badly. Nerf guns and moving through quicksand is not fun in 2021.I think 343 found a nice balance by adding the tactical tools of Halo 3 with the speed of Halo 5.

Something I have such a hard time with is people who are classic halo purists. Look I love Halo 3, Halo 2, and Halo Reach multiplayer. But come on it is 2021, Halo 3 is an outdated and slow paced game. I appreciate it for what it is but Halo 3 is over 10 years old. I think Infinite is the right mix of classic and new halo. I think that Infinite took a lot of the best aspects of classic Halo and modernized them. Halo infinite feels like classic Halo, where Halo 5 felt very foreign from Halo all together. I think 343i is doing a good job and I hope they don’t get complacent.

I honestly have more faith in 343i right now than I ever have since they took over. I’ve never enjoyed 343s changes to the game. Ever. But now I’m finding myself ok with clamber, ok with infinite sprint, etc. The game feels enough like classic Halo that these things don’t feel pigeonholed in to the game for the sake of change but instead a natural progression. They nailed the aesthetic, they nailed the pacing, and the balance feels pretty good overall.

Some things I hope we see in the future:

BTB maps that are more open and can focus on vehicle to vehicle combat. Thats something missing from the map they let us play. I hope that’s not missing from the game.

A good SP experience. I’m not sold on the open world. Open world games in general are getting stale and they’re really difficult to truly make them a great experience. I’m hoping bringing Joe Staten back to Halo is going to pay dividends in this area. But a generic open world SP filled with “go here, kill wave, go there, open door” will really sour the game for me, TBH. I know not everyone cares about the campaign, but thats where I’ll be going first in December.

Also obligatory, lack of co-op is a serious bummer. I’m not saying they should’ve delayed the game. But if they had come out and said, “Co-op isn’t ready so we decided to delay the SP campaign again” my feelings would not have been hurt at all.

Vet here who hated each game Reach onwards. I think they perfected the pacing this time around. It feels fast and methodical all at once

I do feel it’s faster than pre-5 Halo. However it’s not bad thing. It’s constant, hence all needed is to adjust and get used to it.
In the past also feel H4 really fast, but after some time you can change match between it and CE easily.

Understandable if it’s H5 thruster that throw thing

343i is definitely making a good mix of old and new Halo with Halo Infinite.

I have had mix opinions in my own friend group about. Some of them really liked the older Halos so they aren’t crazy about the sprint but I have friends that love the sprint. Just like the rest of this community it seems like. Still a great game so far, hopefully its still good at launch!

I think you’re right when it comes to player movement and the basic feel of the game, they crushed it. I think complaints about it being too fast or too slow are the “noise” in the forums that another post referred to.

However, I think when you throw out the outliers, there are legitimate complaints about the balance and feel of the weapons. I don’t think any of these problems require an overhaul of game systems though. I think it’s just a matter of play testing, looking at statistical data, and making adjustments. I would assume that they will be looking at data from this weekend as soon as they arrive at work today.
