A list of gametypes from Halo's past and present

King of the Hill and Territories are two different gametypes, for whoever above said they were the same.Halo 4 had Grifball but not Assault. and Grifball could not be perfectly modified into Assault. in every other game, though, Grifball is only a variant of Assault.

Halo 1

  • Slayer - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Juggernaut - TerritoriesHalo 3

  • Slayer - CTF - Strongholds - Assault - Oddball - RicochetRemoved gametypes from outside of the standard “Arena” experience. Also removed variants - Grifball is a variant of Assault, Juggernaut was a variant of Oddball in Halo CE, and Assault was a variant of CTF. Territories was present in Halo 2.

I hated races in H3 but Reach did it perfect. I actually miss playing it with my friends. KOTH and ricochet are probably the best competitive game types that have ever existed. Im just waiting and having fun with what we have now. i hope they bring multi team back one day. Either 2s or 3s I dont care

I miss dominion and invasion

You removed variants but you still kept Ricochet in H5.

That’s funny how since removing the gametypes that weren’t at launch from halo 5, there is only 4 game types, including Warzone.

You’re going to say ODST lacked in content? It was an expansion of Halo 3, it’s not a stand alone game my friend. It had a whole separate campaign as well as Firefight mode. In addition we got more achievements and maps for H3 multiplayer. Facepalm

invasion was heil of a game mode

Err, yes technically it did lack in content, the Halo 3 MP maps were not part of ODST, it was a standalone disc, ODST itself only had the Campaign and Firefight, i don’t believe it even had theater mode. It’s just on this list because it introduced Firefight

Oddball, Ricochet, and Grifball are all variants of Assault in Halo 5. Don’t try to ake the list bigger than it is.

Breakout???

I see your point, but it’s hard to say that Breakout is anything more than a variant of Slayer (like Fiesta or SWAT). The Flag aspect of it rarely comes in to play.

You mean neutral flag with one life?

With different health/shield settings also. I certainly think it is differentiated enough to warrant it’s own spot. Round based, flag/slayer hybrid with lower health shields. Of course you guys are probably just trying to hate, so whatever.

…Which you can change in the player traits of any gametype? The rounds, the player traits, the starting weapons…

Man this thread is really reminding me that although Reach got a number of things wrong, it definitely got gametypes right. Headhunter, Stockpile, and Juggernaut were so fun even though they rarely came up.

I wouldn’t call Forge, Firefight, or Spartan Ops “gametypes”. They’re completely separate modes from the standard multiplayer.

As far as I can tell, the game modes for each game go like this:

Halo: CE
Main: Slayer, CTF, KotH, Race, Oddball
Significant Spin-Off/Variants: Assault (CTF Variant), Juggernaut (Oddball Variant)
DLC: None
Total Major Game Modes: 7

Halo 2
Main: Slayer, CTF, Oddball, KotH, Juggernaut, Territories, Assault
Significant Spin-Off/Variants: SWAT
DLC: None
Total Major Game Modes: 8

Halo 3
Main: Slayer, CTF, Oddball, KotH, Juggernaut, Infection, VIP, Territories, Assault
Significant Spin-Off/Variants: SWAT, Race, Grifball
DLC: None
Total Major Game Modes: 12

Halo: Reach
Main: Assault, CTF, Headhunter, Infection, Invasion, Juggernaut, KotH, Oddball, Race, Stockpile, Territories, Slayer
Significant Spin-Off/Variants: Invasion Slayer, Grifball, SWAT
DLC: None
Total Major Game Modes: 15

Halo 4
Main: Slayer, CTF, Oddball, KotH, Dominion, Extraction, Flood, Regicide, Grifball
Significant Spin-Off/Variants: SWAT, Race (Custom, Eventually Offical Gametype)
DLC: Ricochet
Total Major Game Modes: 11

Halo 5: Guardians
Main: Slayer, CTF, Breakout, Strongholds, Warzone, Warzone Assault
Significant Spin-Off/Variants: SWAT
DLC: Assault, Grifball, Fiesta (as standalone game type), Ricochet (through customs), Oddball (through customs)
Total Major Game Modes: 9( Offical Modes only), 11(including possible ball modes like Oddball/Ricochet), 12(with Fiesta)

Obviously, what a person counts as a significant gametype is a matter of opinion, but Halo 5 isn’t necessarily as bad off as people make it out to be. It’s also worth noting that a lot of the Reach-only modes like Headhunter and Stockpile were barely touched and played.

When did gametype variants become gametypes? Just because they are “notable” does not make them their own gametype. If thats the case you should be counting things like Slayer Pro, Fat Kid, Zeus, Sumo, Crazy King, etc. but they aren’t gametypes. They are variants of preexisting ones. Don’t bend the rules to make Halo 5 look like it has more content than it really does. you’re only fooling yourself. Like, why would you count Fiesta in Halo 5 only? Why not Shotty Snipers and Free For All Slayer too? Reach gametypes not being picked by people isn’t a valid arguement. A restaurant has a plethora of dishes but few favorites, does that mean it doesnt have a plethora of dishes? No.
