A list of gametypes from Halo's past and present

I have Forge and Firefight/Spartan Ops included because they are big features, not really gametypes, but I can’t have that specific of a title
Got rid of Grifball everywhere and added Territories to Halo 2 and Strongholds to Halo 5

I read through a popular post, and decided to make one of my own. It’s late, I have nothing better to do (sleep can wait). I love Halo, yet after reading some posts about the lack of gametypes in Halo 5, I figured I’d take out some frustration by sharing some facts. So here are gametypes featured in past Halo games (and Halo 5) that I can remember. I am also quite certain that almost all of these were in their respective games at launch except in Halo 5, which didn’t have Assault, Grifball (nor did Halo 3) or Forge at launch. And I do believe that Oddball isn’t in there officially, though the options are there to make it and Ricochet.
Oh, and Halo 4 didn’t have Ricochet at launch either…

Halo 1

  • Slayer - Oddball (Juggernaut variant?) - Rally (Race) - KOTH - CTFHalo 2

  • Slayer (Infection started here) - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Juggernaut - TerritoriesHalo 3

  • Slayer - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Juggernaut - Infection - Territories - VIP - Forge (Does this count?)Halo 3 ODST

  • Firefight (This game lacked in content, but Firefight was a huge addition to Halo)Halo Reach

  • Slayer - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Infection - Territories - Race (Rally) - Stockpile - Invasion - Headhunter - Firefight - ForgeHalo 4

  • Slayer - Oddball - KOTH - CTF - Flood (Infection) - Spartan Ops (Kinda like Firefight - Regicide - Dominion (Like Territories) - Extraction - Richochet - ForgeHalo 5

  • Slayer - CTF - Warzone - Strongholds - Assault - ForgeSo there it is, if adjustments need to be made I can (and have)

Look at that straight decline after reach

Now mention what was at launch and what wasn’t.

I kind of did at the very beginning of my post. I only remember a few from past games.

Assault was in reach and CE though it used a flag in the latter.

I’ll add Assault to Reach then, i think i remember playing it now

Ah, Headhunter. I played it once in the Halo: Reach beta, never got to play it again. Was it not included in any of the playlists?
(Never got to play Halo 4’s extraction either. Was really excited for it.)

Also, isn’t Territories and KOTH just variants of each other?

Come to think of it, I don’t recall I ever got to play 60% of any of these gametypes. I never saw them. In any of the playlists. I am really, really sad now. I missed some great stuff that I will literally never get the chance to play.

I’m actually legitimately mad right now.

You should add it to CE as well. It was called flag assault and you had to plant the flag in the enemy base, same idea as assault, just a flag instead of a bomb.

Really? Huh, never really played anything other than Slayer in CE, I’ll make an adjustment though

You forgot team classics from reach and action sack and rumble pit

You should take out Grifball from the everything since it isn’t really it’s own gamemode, it’s just settings being tweaked just like Fiesta.

I wasn’t sure but i mentioned how it was only in there because it was featured in MM, and it’s kind of important to some people (not really me just some people)

Gametype: Main goal of the match.

Gamemode: Child of Gametype, different variations of a gametype done by changing options/rules.

For instance, Assault as a gametype was not present in Halo CE, it was a game mode of CTF.

Halo 2 also had Territories.
Halo 3’s Griffbal was a gamemode from Assault, not its own gametype.

Isn’t Halo 5’s Griffbal and Assault gamemodes from the Ballgame gametype?

Also, if you include variants, why isn’t SWAT included?

PS: I may have game mode and game type mixed up, bear that in mind.

This is what I don’t understand about 343. These game types are tried and true and what made Halo great. From a consumers standpoint, who’s played every Halo religiously, when I see armor skins, weapon skins and micro-transactions taking priority over a lack luster campaign and actual playable content, it makes me shake my head.
Hell, you could even add the community Forge map created play list it had its own slayer, CTF and infection modes. I think I remember Halo 3 having that. At the rate epic maps are being pumped out on Forgehub you’d think we’d have one by now…

Pretty close if you ask me. In fact I think OP is the closest anyone on this forum has gotten to a proper list of gametypes. Everyone else is always throwing SWAT or Doubles or other gamemodes into the mix when they called gamemodes for a reason, they are spawned from the gametypes.

And sort of for Halo 5’s handling of the Ball gametype. The overall ball gamemode is simply called ‘Assault’ if you go to custom games to remake Oddball or something then you’ll simply see the ‘Assault’ gametype, not ‘Ball.’ Grifball is indeed a gamemode variant of Assault and should be removed from this list due to that however, Halo 5’s Assault also gives us the ability to recreate Oddball and Ricochet. While Ricochet can also be put off as an Assault gamemode, Oddball is very different from Assault and can be added to the list of gametypes because I’m sure someone has remade it by now.

Basically, CE’s Assault, Firefight’s generator defense, and Grifball should be removed from this list while Oddball should be added to Halo 5’s list.

And to answer and respond to other comments on this thread,

  1. No, Team Classics, Action Sack, and Rumble Pit should not be added those are playlists that contain gametypes and gamemodes. This thread is talking about gametypes only.
  2. Territories did spawn as a gamemode of KOTH if I recall correctly but at some point it was made into it’s own dedicated gametype, just like how Assault in CE was a gamemode that turned into a gametype in Halo 2. They are their own respective gametype despite the similarities. And 60% of these playlists were in the Objective Playlist for Reach or Halo 4, in fact I think some had their own dedicated playlists for awhile…

Forgot strongholds…

King of the Hill and Territories are two different gametypes, for whoever above said they were the same.Halo 4 had Grifball but not Assault. and Grifball could not be perfectly modified into Assault. in every other game, though, Grifball is only a variant of Assault.

Halo 1

  • Slayer - Oddball - Race - KOTH - CTFHalo 2

  • Slayer - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Juggernaut - TerritoriesHalo 3

  • Slayer - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Juggernaut - Infection - Territories - VIPHalo Reach

  • Slayer - Oddball - Assault - KOTH - CTF - Infection - Territories - Race - Stockpile - Invasion - Headhunter - JuggernautHalo 4

  • Slayer - Oddball - KOTH - CTF - Flood - Regicide - Dominion - Extraction - Ricochet - GrifballHalo 5

  • Slayer - CTF - Strongholds - Assault - Oddball - RicochetRemoved gametypes from outside of the standard “Arena” experience. Also removed variants - Grifball is a variant of Assault, Juggernaut was a variant of Oddball in Halo CE, and Assault was a variant of CTF. Territories was present in Halo 2.

I hated races in H3 but Reach did it perfect. I actually miss playing it with my friends. KOTH and ricochet are probably the best competitive game types that have ever existed. Im just waiting and having fun with what we have now. i hope they bring multi team back one day. Either 2s or 3s I dont care

I miss dominion and invasion

You removed variants but you still kept Ricochet in H5.
