A.I Driving. Yea I said it.

A.I driving has been an idea that since Halo 2 seemed perfect. I remember hearing about it and feeling overwhelmed with joy. Being able to shoot while someone else drives ^___^ [admit it you felt it too].

Yet in all Halo games the A.I driving has been horrid. The enemies are fine because they can stick to a area of the map and thats it, while your allies need to go from point A to point B a task that isn’t as easy as it sounds. In Halo’s defense I haven’t really seen any game with good driver A.I that was not scripted a racing game [which is linear motion anyway]

My idea is to have a mix of scripted driving with A.I. This in a way exists already however not fully implemented. So here’s my little two cents on it

Allies never leave…
Unless they are being picked up or they are too weak to fight your allies should be with you and follow you as long as possible. This counts for driving, getting more forces should not stop you from having more vehicles.

If you start with one warthog and can keep it alive it should follow you around until a good reason.

Stick to a path, not a tree
Big one. A.I should stay away from tight areas in which any vehicle can not fit. Unless it’s part of the mission.

Don’t stay still, Keep distance, Back and forth

A.I drivers should never stay in one spot while point B is waiting for you. They should know to put the petal to the metal. In a fight standing still only gets them killed. With a few exceptions a.i should NEVER just stand still during a fight.

Also during a fight [with say a warthog] they should keep distance. Warthogs as anyone know works much better at mid range combat [and mid range with vehicles is not the same as on foot]. This gives the gunner room to shoot, aim, and see his targets.

Gunners for the big. Side seats for the lil

If you are driving and you have a passenger and a gunner the GUNNER should by default try to take out the biggest [yet most logical of course] enemy[ies]. While the passenger should be dealing with ground forces.

In Halo before I’ve seen gunners kill grunts while the passenger is literally trying to kill a ghost with an SMG -___-. Please no.

Better guns in front please

I have to admit Halo Reach does this pretty well [almost] However whoever has a heavier weapon or sniper weapon should always take side seat

More YEE HAWS please

Last but not least bring back the old school Halo:CE YEEE HAWWS.

Bye

I think it would be better if we scrap AI drivign and just have back the usefull AI passengers, It was always SOOOO much fun in CE having an AI sniper on my hog or scorpion they were truly an asset.

I don’t know how it’s possible but they’ve actually somehow made the AI for driving worse with each game.

I mean sure the H2 drivers would occasionally run you over and ram enemies, but at least they drove in the correct direction rather than off the side of cliffs.

The AI in Halo needs a complete overhaul, especially the ally AI.

I think programming the AI to drive correctly is harder than we think. If you really come to think about it, the driver is most of the time pulled to many directions. There is the turret operator who is shooting one enemy, the passenger who is shooting another, the mission objective, enemies from all directions. On top of all this, the whole enviroment is open with no set path that the AI can just drive.

This gives the programmers a huge challenge. How can the AI know what the turret operator wants? What priority order should it take? How can it navigate without any scripted path?

I’m not saying it’s not doable. They could accomplish it with clever programming, but I would never expect the AI to be anything above the level of a five year old who is playing Halo for the first when it comes to driving.

It’s not so much that people want the driver to go straight to where you’re shooting, it’s more we don’t want them to drive of a cliff or into a rock, or stop altogether in the middle of a battle.

I usually never let the ai drive because i know how horrible it is lol but i let them once on heroic i think one time at the end of sword base i took passenger just to see for myself how bad it was since i hadn’t in awhile they literally just sat there maybe moving like 5 feet forward then 3 feet back while 2 revenants just tore us apart (the good thing is though kat survived lol) like for 6-7 goes till i just took the wheel it definitely needs to be fixed

that’s exactly what i’ve been thinking Lol

I rode in the gunner seat solo on Legendary in Halo 2 and 3. The driver A.I. was adequate in those games.

I have seen worse, in Halo 3, the gunner was shooting a DEAD grunt and the passenger was shooting a wraith with an Assault Rifle.

All Halo games have done this.

Also, can we please have something done about the AI shooting dead targets even though there are still plenty of live targets left to shoot?
