A.i companion good or stupid

Well this post is pretty much self explanatory regarding the a.i spartan companions in campaign.
I like the idea of ordering you’r squad to doing particular task like

  • Pick up this weapon/turret - Get into this vehicle (much appreciated!) - Attack this enemy - Revive fallen squad mateon the downside I’ve seen my Fellow Spartans doing some pretty stupid things.
for example: when im down by a enemy, need to be revived sometimes they might just stand their and watch me die.
or often when i target a hunter or a knight that has a weak point,i see them shoot at the enemy but not its weak to take it down.
i think im just being a little too critical with this but
so what do you think of the squad a.i are they smart or completely stupid?

Completely and utterly stupid. Legendary difficulty shows it.

Yes, is very stupid.

Well I can’t say I didn’t expect more considering they said they have cloud computing for AI. Either mine wasn’t connected or the cloud was very slow.

Upon requesting help when downed, more than often would they all freeze in place while half my timer drained away before deciding who would revive me. In cases where cover was possible when reviving they’d stand out in the open.

When everyone were equipped with snipers or other longer range weaponry and ordered to shoot at a specific target far away in a cluster of enemies. They’d charge attempting to enter CQC, while out in the open.

I’m dissapointed with how they perform their orders, or even that there are so few orders. I know thet want to keep it simple, but in this case the more simple it is the less useful it is.

I detested the squad initially on my solo play through at first but I realised later on that I was to blame. As the leader u need to give them orders constantly.
Tell them to pick up the extra weaponry that you can’t carry. Tell them to fight the enemies you want them to. Tell them to go places you want them to.

Trust me, they are so much better when you play this way.

Very stupid, especially when in Legendary mode and they run into you pushing you out of cover to get killed. It’s happened a few times where I have had them run into me and literately push me across the map. Not to mention that I have to prompt with the ‘X’ Button even tho I’m dead right next to them, an it still takes them ages to start reviving me.

They’re stupid but i think its fine. Pretty sure 343 said they didn’t make them too powerful to let the player still feel like the main Hero in one of their early videos.
Previous games if you went down you were out of luck at least you’ve got a chance. Hang back give them orders and don’t expect too much.

So they are really there as a plot convenience to explain the co-op mode.

The only use I’ve found them to be is as a diversion to allow me to take out distracted enemies or to revive me. In terms of taking out enemies, like 99% of games they do little damage to the opposition.

I an answer to your question OP both is the answer, the AI can be pretty intelligent if you issue commands etc. However at the same time they can be really dumb like they sometimes won’t climb up to revive you etc or instead of sprinting over to revive you they just walk etc. Same goes for the enemy though they can both be clever and dumb. Take the Final warden fight for example here on solo legendary the enemy AI is kind of dumb IMO as the warden only attacks you and completely ignores your teammates. So you just give all your teammates power weapons position them away from you so they don’t get hit by the AOE attacks and keep dodging makes this fight pretty easy.

They’re brick to the head special.

Me “Hey i’m down, i need assistance”

AI “Nope, can’t hear you, i’m staring at this wall”

Me “You’re underattack, fire back or revive me!”

AI zoidberg noises

pretty much its meant to add a more warlike feel but they screwed it up slightly.

Telling a squad mate to pick up a weapon is rather useless. They pick it up then never use it.

Been like that for me too to the point that sometimes they don’t move at all.

AI are stupid.

If the difficulty is higher than normal you should probably just play with friends instead of the A.I. I played through the campaign on heroic and the a.i. were pretty much useless

They do but to keep it balanced I think 343 made it like this deliberately considering the AI have infinite ammo. So against weaker enemies they use weaker weapons. For example the fight with the Warden Eternal I gave my whole team IC and they used them against him even while carrying weaker weapons so I think it is programmed that your AI teammates only use stronger weapons against the stronger opponents to balance the fact they have infinite ammo. You can work around it though just make sure for example you always want linda to snipe that she picks up two sniper rifles etc and that works.

The mechanic of having them pick up weapons and get in vehicles on the click of a button is amazing. Great idea.

But even a good idea is horrible if not executed well. you can have the AI pick up a weapon, but if they use it is another thing. Plenty times I had them pick up snipers, rockets or other weapons. Never seen them shoot it. As for vehicles, they do get it. But they can’t drive at all. Kat in Reach drove a lot better.

It’s not stellar. But I think halo 5 has the best friendly AI in all of halo history. well besides arbiter in 3. but considering the only other note worthy comparison is noble team that really isn’t saying much.

I think they’re not too bright unless you give them a command. If you do that, I think they’re okay.
