A generic job question.

I am currently a 16 year old UK resident, who has never stopped loving HALO. I would like to know what steps I would need to take in order to apply for ajob in the US games industry. I have checked with the US Embassy UK website, and so far I have figured out that I will need an Employment Immigration Visa, but what I would like to know is the order in which I would look for a job. Do I need to be told I have a job in the US before I can apply for the Visa.

Any replys would be appreciated.

P.S
I do understand that any reply is subject to change by the time I have finished Uni.

I know this should go in an off-topic section, but there isn’t one. Yet.

You should ask a mod.

Thought about that, never really got on with the floodians. Too jokey.

Sent a message to BS Angel.

Are there any English people working for 343? They might be able to help a little more.

The only piece of advice I can possibly think of is “be the best.” Find your target areas in which you’d like to work and become the best in those fields. From what I’ve noticed about people in the gaming industry, they are pretty much all experts. No entry level people.

That’s another thing. How can you break into the industry if hey want people with experience in the industry? catch 22 I suppose. I am not including making my own game in that though.

Then it gets into who you know. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “it’s not what you know, it’s who.” Make your presence known, be available, introduce yourself, and people will take notice of what you do.

I am planning on going to Gamescom next year. That may help.

Entry level is still there (just lacking experience), but the area they may be entry level in is still of high professional quality. Just because you get a piece of paper saying you can do the job doesn’t mean you can do the job. If you know what I mean. You gotta be better than good. Gooder than best. You have to give it your all and show that you are a commodity that they have to have to succeed.

Thanks for the help. Until I read your bio I honestly thought your were an employee XD

Also, I see your a Graohic Designer. I hope to be a professional web developer. Here’s one site I’ve made: http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x344/Eco_Maiden/?action=view&current=WingnutOnlinecouk.png

That si just a draft for my friend, so forgive the spelling errors.

HAHAHAH! It is funny that you mention the employee thing. That made rukizzel and I laugh. Has nothing to do with you, just a running joke for him and I.

I am under the impression that Frankie is scottish, so he’s from the UK and he did great!

I am 16 as well! However I am currently an intern at a emerging gaming company, right now they just have me building new websites. (I am programming and that’s what I really want to do in life!) It really is a great experience, you learn from people who have years of experience and get a huge headstart, so I would recommend moving to U.S. as soon as you can and try to get an internship somewhere while going to school.

Experience really is everything in the industry, experience not only matches a degree but can also be more valuable. However I still will get my degree, as I recommend you do as well. What field do you want to go into? That is a big question and you should find the answer to that before anything else

Honestly though, you’re 16 so you really wouldn’t just be hired with no experience what so ever. I’m a big Halo fan too but I know for a fact that just being a fan won’t get me a job at 343i. You’ll need to start off low and work your way up.

Yep Edinburgh, I imagine he’s probably been through my town at least once since it’s only like an hour Away.

This video cracks me up about breaking into the game industry.

I know how you’re feeling dude. I’m 17 and I love games and specifically Halo too, so I’m sure I’ll get into the games industry later on, and I hope I can combine it with my webdesign skills. Currently I am setting up my own game studio - Impact Game Studios - and that’s been working out pretty good so far; we’re working on a mobile game for iOS and Android with 8 people as we speak. So just start somewhere and try to gain as much experience as possible
