The huge divide of the Halo community is horrendous. For years, either be new or classic, bronze to onyx, casual to competitive, and beginner to pro, we are killing our own game community. A community with a nearly 20 YEAR LONG HISTORY. Yes, Halo has changed in many ways for classic players, but it did bring some natural and organic new gameplay. Climbing, stabilizers, and thruster boost have become great tools to use. Sprint, ADS, and Spartan Charge though have been heavily criticized. Yet it doesn’t end there, oh not by a LONG SHOT! Constant hatred for fellow Halo fan has spun out of control. We are becoming NO MUTANTS ALLOWED! That is as low as a community can go! I don’t care if you like Bungie, or 343 at all, not one bit. I’m just happy that Halo even exists in 2017, but criticism for either bad campaign, or bad multiplayer shouldn’t have us yelling over our mics like we’re in a war. What we need is to find common ground, build upon that ground, break down what separates us, and tell 343 what we want. We are not NO MUTANTS ALLOWED, we are the Halo community, the HALO NATION. Now leave you own opinion, and please respect your fellow Halo player. I want to hear your thoughts on how we as a community can unite, and help make Halo better.
I have no animosity toward other players, and I have no animosity toward any of the developers as individuals. What I hate are the decisions that were made that brought Halo to what it is today. Halo did not need to change so drastically. If I’m wrong about that, and the only way for the new games to sell was to change them drastically, then that means it was time to end the franchise. What good is keeping the “Halo” name going if we have to twist it and bend it into something that is hardly even resembles a Halo game?
Some people like the nu-Halo gameplay formula, and that’s fine. But, what they’re enjoying isn’t a Halo game in any way aside from its title.
It’s sad that FPS halo games have had to modernise to compete with other games. But I much prefered the slower paced times. We can’t keep rushing ahead forever. Eventually we need to get slow paced FPS games to appreciate them. Current generations haven’t played the older games, they think that fast action is the best way to go. They need to be enlightened.

No mutants allowed? Guess I’ll grab my stuff ;(
On a serious note, I do agree, I wish the Halo community wasn’t so spilt. Sadly as long as 343 changes Halo, people will like it and hate it. I hated Halo 4, but Halo 5 really brought me back. Change is going to happen, and I for one think most of the changes in Halo 5 were good.

Same. I strongly disliked halo 4. I barely played it. Halo 5 on the other hand… Love it.
No Mutants Allowed isn’t even a bad community, they all get along pretty well actually. Plus they promote a ton of indie RPGs, and have an excellent modding community that still provides content for the original two games. The only thing they really bash is Bethesda RPGs, and that’s because Beth tends to ignore canon and gameplay elements that the Fallout franchise was built on, like player choice resulting in multiple endings and well written quests that don’t contradict the established canon. Heck, most of them even like New Vegas because it actually allows proper C&C roleplaying and makes sense canonicly, some even consider it their favorite game in the series. Overall, the Halo community is a much more divided and toxic place than NMA is currently because both Bungie fans and 343 fans coexist on waypoint and spend a lot of time arguing with eachother. Before you bash a community I suggest you check them out for yourself. If you want to see a really toxic community go on RPG codex after a big AAA RPG release, they hate almost everything when it first comes out, i’m talking hundreds of pages of memes bashing the devs.

Good points on there, but I actually was on No Mutants Allowed for a few months. Now as a community it is United, I was referring to the old school and newerish Fallout fans. The situation is very much like ours, but its past toxicity has been in the spotlight of notoriusness. It can have great mods and all, but the reputation is what has put the community in a lot of people’s negative views. Anyhow though, great points you made!
Unfortunately, the entire gaming community is toxic in different levels. They want the game that way, and don’t accept anything different.
Most of the companies also need to learn that people are too vocal and everyone has a different opinion on a specific subject and, sometimes, please everyone is nearly impossible.
In the case of Halo, a 15 years franchise, where there are people from different generations, likes, and styles to play, it is even more complicated.
In my opinion about the state of Halo, I will always support creativity. The Halo franchise is so rich and it can deliver so many different and exciting experiences that I realize it cannot stay the same forever in the safe spot.
The Halo community will always be very split because everyone do enjoy a specific piece of the cake.
Some players do buy the game only for the Campaign, others for the Multiplayer and so on. The split is obvious and it will be bigger because everyone wants different things.
To hold a community together is only possible if the game developers do only focus on 1 element and nothing more.
I will not give any clearer answer but the community will always be spread and everyone is different and wants a specific piece of the cake.

Do you think if they took more time to develop a game, it would appeal to more then possibly. That way both aspects can be polished to a credible, and lived by both sides.
its divided simply for its not the same franchise anymore. Only the name remains the same. Its not the same series the ones from the start have been playing. Its something new that has divided the fanbase and is obviously targeting newer players and the fans of the modern shooter genre and that pushes the fans of the older style even farther away.
its just not Halo anymore. Its something else.
and people really dont have to accept it as a Halo if they dont want to. They dont have to get it if they dont want to.
ultimately some just want Halo to return to its roots so it could go its once unique path again and prosper.
the changes are complained for those changes have started killing Halo in both its core and its population.
and i dont believe this is simply the cause of hating for no reason. Why would anyone hate anything for no reason? Its the things that have happened and the changes that are made that have caused the hate and splitting of the community.
as a somekind of example i saw no such hate on a large scale on ensemble studios. Also some franchises have gotten new developers and there has not been such hate (at least for no reason).
A division in the community is just something that comes with, well, for one thing, being human, and as an extension of that, being part of a community. There might be a couple things that are nearly universally agreed on by a community, but those a far and few between.
Way I see it, the only way there won’t be a divide is if we all end up becoming the same exact person.

If all of use was the same person, games would not nearly be as fun and we wouldn’t see these epic forge creations and some of the most interesting map concepts.
It’s also the fact that Halo focused an a very wide fan base that are after a specific part of the game only like Forgers, Campaign players and Multiplayer players´to make a basic model how the community is divided. Then all these sections are divided into smaller sub sections like which game mode they prefer to play in the multiplayer part of the game.
part of me gets whats going on but at the same time, people will continue to have their opinions of games. I know I’m not 100% happy with H5 but I still play it.
I love the way the game has progressed. I loved all the older games but to be honest, Halo now feels closer to what i imagined it was while reading the books. Sadly, i feel the hate comes from people who can’t accept, or are afraid of, change. You need to attract new blood to keep the game going and that means change. People love it for different reasons and i don’t believe anybodies opinion is wrong. You need to realize everybody has their own opinion and respect that, but it seems, sadly, that a lot of people see you not agreeing with them as an attack against them personally.
You can argue all day about preference and subjective changes like sprint and mobility, but the fact of the matter is that the divide between people who have been playing Halo since day 1 and people who hopped on the bandwagon during Reach or 4 exists for a very good reason. Halo used to set trends, it used to be the FPS other’s tried to take down, remember the term ‘Halo Killer’? When was the last time you saw that being used?
It’s not even subjective changes like the art-style or music, it’s objectively bad changes, undefendable decisions like Halo 5’s campaign, micro-transactions, false advertising, the travesty that was the MCC, I respect other people’s rights to have opinions, but these are facts.
It’s not without reason, we’re not crazy, Halo as a franchise has been a mess since 2012 and only now with HW2 are we starting to see any semblance of hope for things to come. HW2 feels the most like Halo thematically since Reach and it’s definitely a step in the right direction, but if Halo 6 wants to be successful it needs to take a look at what made Halo great in the first place and stop chasing trends like ‘advanced mobility’.
What the ‘new’ fans like isn’t Halo, no matter what name is plastered on the box, and I wont apologize for wanting Halo to return to it’s former place at the top of the FPS mountain.
Because what fanbase is more sustainable, the campaingers, splitscreeners, LASO and Speedrunners, hardcore and casual teabagging, glitch hunting, machini-making, spawn-killing, custom-gaming, achievement hunting, map forging and major league gaming players of old? Or the trend following, microtransaction defending, ads loving, bullet magnetism denying players of new?
I know which side I’m on. I just wish there didn’t need to be sides.
