Just saying, this took me ages to come up with, so please take the time to read through it all. Thanks!
Ever since the release of Halo Reach, Halo took a different turn theme wise. It was Halo 4 that really changed it, particularly to do with the Covenant. For those who don’t know, a ‘Covenant’ is an agreement, normally between two people or groups. In Halo’s case, it’s an agreement between the San 'Shyuum and the Sangheili species (but not before they had a huge war). Soon more species joined the Covenant, such as the Unggoy and the Jiralhanae, who all believed in one thing. The Great Journey. They believed that the Forerunners were Gods and that there technology were relics. But when the Covenant encountered the humans, the Prophets realised that the humans were pretty much the Forerunners cousins. And since the humans are obviously not Gods, that would mean… you get the idea. So to cover up for this, the Prophets declared war on humanity so that they could wipe them out, and still have the grunts, elites, jackals and brutes worshiping the Prophets as essentially Jesus’s of the Covenant. The theme that the Covenant took was quite interesting. It seems that they tried to make everything more ‘holy’ and ‘spiritual’ such as their plasma rifles not shooting plasma, but holy arrays. The energy swords were made of matter of the gods, able to strike down any heretic with a single swing. But when the new Covenant came, it all of a sudden was a whole lot more military and tactical. The energy swords were no longer these holy weapons, but much rather a high ranking elites choice of weaponry. And the plasma rifle? Yeah. And about the name, ‘Covenant’. What is there an agreement between? There are no prophets, so it’s just Jul 'Mdama who’s in charge. So my question is: should the Covenant change it’s style in Halo 6, maybe with the return of the San 'Shyuum, or a clash between the old and new style of elites? Give me your thoughts. New vs Old Covenant.

The Covenant is gone. They were finished off in Halo 5, except some warlords who are still around. Jul’s faction considered itself a successor to the original covenant and referred to itself as such for both practical and psychological reasons.
Jul’s Covenant were still believers like the original, its just that Jul was fully understanding of the fact that the Forerunners were not gods. In a sense, fool his Covenant into thinking that he believed.
I completely hope the Covenant are done. Finished. Gone.
I wouldn’t mind having some Brute enemies, but only if there’s a reason, like we’re taken to one of their worlds during the campaign, and they don’t like it.
We’re probably gonna be fighting Prometheans the entire campaign, which hardly fills me with excitement. Interesting to see how the AIs play into it, though.
The Great Schism really didn’t ‘end’ yet. The Brutes and the San Shayuum escaped along with the Engineers to some unknown place. This band still follows the original Covenant and its rules. The Covenant we saw in Halo 4 and 5 were Sanghieli insurrectionists. If the Covenant doesn’t at some point return, Halo will never be the same.

Yeah I’m kinda dreading the exclusive use of Prometheans in 6. While I do agree with you that the Covenant should just be done at this point. I still want to see some of the races maybe revert back to their pre-covenant lifestyles. Like on a mission you find a derelict spaceship or station just crawling with Kig-Yar Pirates. Maybe have UNSC employed Unggoy as interpreters, lol. The races of the covenant are just so interesting, I’d hate to see them fall by the wayside.
