I’m a competitive gamer, I play hard, I play to win, and most of all I make sure I have fun.
I was personally never a fan of ranks, I never had a desire to rank to 50 in Halo 2 or 3 and I believe the highest I ever got in 2 was 46 and in 3 was a 43.
I eventually became pretty discouraged from playing Halo 3 because I didn’t have a team to run with and if I did matchmaking was so slow! So I would always end up losing my matches and thus for, ranking down and then ridiculed for ranking down when half my team has quit out and I stick it through the entire match in a 4 v 1 going +3.
As a girl gamer, it makes it even worse since being called bad and being told to stop playing and get back to the kitchen by these guys with an over inflated ego, just turned me off from matchmaking all together.
I think people should be given a choice to have a rank and base everything off rank, but I don’t think people who don’t want to be ranked and harassed because of said rank should be forced to hold a rank.
This is why I think their should be separate playlists or maybe even the same playlists with separate zones. It does seems like a lot of work, and it also seems like it would divide the crowd but it might be a good thing to separate playlists for people who want to be MLG pro status, to people who just want to play to win but also to just have fun without worrying about a number.
TL;DR: It would be nice if 343 catered to all types of gamers, not just casual and core gamers.

I think most people would agree with you. They should make it like they did in Halo 3. Separate ranked playlists. But make the rank visible in-game.
