A difficult start, how to improve

Hi guys!
I played every Halo title. I was a decent player on every game, but I’m having troubles with the fifth installment of the saga.
Can you give me some advice to improve my gameplay and get better at the game? Either pro tips and advices for the newbies are good for me.
Thank you

The two best things you can do are to build up your experience by playing and watch live streams of highly skilled players and see the kinds of things they do with what weapons.

  1. Bumper Jumper! Since I switched to these controls I’ve vastly improved and can play as if I am playing Halo and not some odd feeling shooter, it’s jarring getting used to the switch but you’ll see what I mean when you’re crushing people in BR fights being able to actually jump on shot 3 rather than feeling stuck to the ground like a COD shooter and waiting for the first shot to win.

  2. Precision weapons. The AR is not your friend, you are in an abusive relationship and he’s not helping you. Almost always use Pistol until you can get a rifle, the range and precision will help immensely, being able to ping people at range not only is more efficient but it keeps you out of danger a lot more, plus it’s a psychological weapon as nobody will want to come near a spot you’re holding if they get hit in the face from range.

  3. Use Evade. I’ve been using Evade to get out of a lot of situations, if you make yourself aware of it’s existence and force yourself to use it you’ll start to find you Evade in and out of situations a lot and become a lot more effective, it can be especially effective to go straight backwards to avoid shoulder charge rush and just shoot the stunned idiot in the face, or to sidestep left or right in a losing gun fight to get the advantage.

  4. Don’t hold forward. This is my biggest tip to everyone, you have no need to chase the enemy, don’t get into the COD cycle of respawn, run, shoot, respawn. If you go down then just look around when you respawn, stop rushing into them because they want kills so they’ll come to you eventually and it’s better to catch them sprinting than the other way around. It’s a such a simple tip but FORCE yourself to think “Don’t hold forward” constantly and you’ll find that you have the advantage a lot more often as you won’t go sprinting off into another nade trap corner and you’ll be checking your surroundings a lot more, when they come, you’ll be calm, collected, and throwing a nade.

These tips are pretty basic, but I think they can help a lot.

There are a number of things you can do to improve you game.

  • One of the most important things in Halo is positioning never stray to far away from cover being out in the open is never a good idea. - If you get someone down to one shot but they escape or are just out of reach don’t chase them let them go an call them out hopefully a teammate who is better placed than you can land the killing below. This way you don’t lose your position so still have control of the area and won’t go running into a trap with his teammates. - Learn spawns times of non timed power weapons and power ups such as shotguns, OS etc. - Also always try an gain control of the high ground on a map as you have a greater vantage point and can see more or what is happening around you. - Use grenades to feel out corners etc so you don’t run into a hiding enemy. The above I would say I just basic things to learn and will greatly improve you game. You then have more advanced tactics you can use to your advantage but take more time to practice etc. Such as using plasma nades to blast power weapons etc towards you or away from an enemy if it’s out of reach from your current position etc.

Good job mate - a good summary here!

Thank you guys very much, it’s nice to see so many people that want other players to improve with the game!

What would be the best control scheme to use? I’m currently using the “Halo 4” scheme as it is similar to past Halo games but in Halo 5 something just doesn’t feel quite right about the controls and I couldn’t stand the default.

In past Halo games I was really good! In this one I can definitely see a drop in my skill level.

I played my entire Halo 3 career with bumper jumper, and I’ve stuck with it on Halo 5. I’d highly recommend it.

Pay attentain to your surroundings if you are shot always know where there is cover that you can thrust behind.
Also dont sprint automatically and as little as possible juat remember a good player can probably get 2 or 3 shots into while your coming out of sprint

There isn’t a best just whatever you find comfortable. With the new Xbox One Update you can now re-map your buttons to be however you see fit. So just experiment and map the controls to the buttons you want until you are comfortable with them.

Thanks guys.

What about analogue sensitivity, what’s your sweet spot?

For me personally I stick with default and play on 3. Some people prefer 10 and are really good with it so again you just need to find what is comfortable for you. I think most of the pro players though use between 3-5 sensitivity as an average.

Really? That low. I have mine on 7!

Maybe that’s why my aim is all over the place when I’m in a panic fire fight haha.

…if it’s at all an option, get the Elite controller - it’s completely changed my gaming experience

It’s definitely something I want…price is a bit steep though.

I will probably look at getting one when Christmas is over with.

Not a great player myself, and a lot of these aren’t specific to 5 over any other Halo, but I got by on these principles: -

  • Stick to the edges of the maps as a general rule. Running through the centre of the maps should only ever be a calculated risk for a power weapon or overshield, and is likely to get you killed quickly - Try to maintain as much height as possible. The higher you are, the less chance you have of being seen first. - Always stick with your team mates, but not so close a grenade or rocket could take you both out. - Switch to your Pistol when you spawn and learn how to use it well, it will train you to use the other key mid-range weapons - Learn where the most useful weapons spawn and plan your routes of movement around them - Visible Power Weapon timers now mean everyone will be battling for them. Be wary of the fact that the areas around these weapons will be hot when the timer ticks down. You can often bag a kill or two just by finding a sneaky position and watching the spawn - The Battle Rilfe, DMR and Carbine are your friends. If you don’t have a power weapon, you should aim to have one of these and a short-range weapon on hand - Don’t chase. Ever. If they find cover, try a grenade, or change direction and plan another way to finish the kill if possible - If you have a good stock of grenades in a high-traffic area, it’s sometimes worth throwing one around a corner or through a doorway, even if you’re not certain someone is there. I often pick up easy kills this way as players tend to rush more in Halo 5. - Grenades can also be used as a defensive weapon. People tend to chase more in Halo 5 because of the unlimited sprint and dash abilities. Throw one or two down behind you if your shields are low and you need time to fight or escape - Watch your teammate’s tags for information on your opponents. For example, if two red X’s suddenly appear right next to each other, there’s a fair chance you don’t want to be there either. However if there’s a long firefight and an X appears, there may be an enemy with low shields nearby you can pick off for an easy kill - If you have a power weapon, work hard not to lose it. Don’t charge in just because you have rockets for example; getting one kill and handing over three rockets is a bad trade. - Jumping and strafing will help you win duels. Running in straight lines will get you killed quick in Halo. I personally taught myself Bumper Jumper button layout so I can aim while jumping, and it made me a better player. - ADS provides lock on for Hydra Launcher (didn’t work this out til last week lol)Sure some will disagree and some of these have already been mentioned, but hope it helps.

That is quite funny to be honest lol. A tip for the hydra though I find useful is lock on to your target then aim up so the rockets rain down hell from above stops them hitting cover so much this way.

I just do not agree with the controller settings… I would say go with what fit you the most. I play H4 settings because I am use to and I will not change because of so. THe controller settings is just my opinion, but other than that great summary

This game might have the steepest learning curve in the franchise thus far, in my experience. It takes time to get a feel for the aiming and movement, so don’t worry about.

The feel will come with time. Until then, try out the different controller schemes and sensitivities, and learn what times you feel most comfortable using smart scope or not.

That’s a top tip sounds like fun as well lol
