We know that there are armor permutations for your Spartan model in multiplayer. In The Fall of Reach Covenant graphic novel, it also shows a whole slew of armor types, which look like EVA, Scout, and Commando from Reach. However, John, Sam, and Kelly all choose the traditional helmet (Mark IV at the time) that we all know of from Halo: CE.
My question is: To what extent are these other types canon? I don’t remember them being mentioned in the novel.
Also, did any other Spartans receive Mark VI MJOLNIR or higher besides John and Naomi?
According to the Halo Essential Visual Guide, they are all canon and offer various resources. Frankly though, I don’t see why they all couldn’t wear Mk.VI helmets though, the different helmets wasn’t really necessary.

I kind of agree, however, I could see some slight advantages.
Scout helmet- less visible visor for a scout who wants to remain hidden. The visor would probably be the most visible part, and could give off reflections.
EVA- don’t really know, it’s what we use for our astronauts in modern times, but you could still use the traditional helmet for extra-vehicular activity. Only advantage I could see is in CQC, like Emile (of course he’s got a carved skull in his way) where you want to see everything when the enemy could pop out every which way.
Commando- don’t see the point, just less field of vision than the traditional helmet.
Also, what degree (I guess that’s the right word) of canon is the Essential Visual Guide? Second?

All canon sources are (theoretically) equal. If you even need to ask, someone at Bungie/343 is doing something wrong.

> The Essential Visual Guide is as canon as the books are, ie 100%. Hell, it does things like confirm that Jorge and Noble Six are dead and. Let me give you some armor specs on Commando. EVA is essential what you think it is, but also for space combat and environmental disasters.

> Commando- "Most of the Commando’s features can be modularly applied to Standard Mk.IV/Mk.V platforms, but the Commando package offers the most comprehensive collection of tactical hardware and systems. The suite includes commando network modules, third-generation uplink capabilities, and an assortment of tactical/logistical field solutions. This allows Spartans to access and process mission intel at an unparalleled level of detail, even while engaged with hostile forces.
To answer your last question, every known surviving Spartan-II asides from Kelly received Mark VI armour. This includes Fred, Linda and Will (who was killed on Onyx). Perhaps there are other Spartan-IIs out there who received it, but we don’t know about them.
Honestly I think it was kinda stupid to have given Noble Team all different armor permutations. I think each Spartan should have had a specific type. Jorge practically had full Grenadier armor. From what I can tell, it would make more sense to have given Carter JFO armor. I understand Jun’s armor since he’s a Sniper. But what is the deal with Emiles? Security, EVA, Operator, make up your mind!

I thought I’d read this in GoO, but it’s been awhile, I couldn’t remember.

Kurt and (most likely) Linda and Kelly revived Mark VI armor (although Kurt switched to SPI armor to be more accepted by the SPARTAN III’s as he saw himself as of them). And yes, the armor varients on the Mark V(B) armor (Reach armor) are cannon, but were only avalable to SPECWAR/GROUP 3 members (i.e Noble Team) normal SPARTAN III’s wore SPI armor and SPARTAN II’s (Excluding Jorge and Kurt) wore standard- issue Mark IV/V/VI/VII armor
